5.0 out of 5 stars A very good helical sharpener and useful to have
I admired a similar sharpener owned by another art student in my class and decided to get one. I was very impressed with the points on her pencils! This is quite a large capacity device. Not too compact if you need to carry it around..its about the size of a large tin of corned beef. Say 7"x 4" x 1.75" Keep it in its box to prevent it from getting damaged. But it's size is a positive thing if you want to sharpen a lot of pencils at a time. It's nicely made in white and grey plastic. The turning handle is all plastic with a knob in the centre for you to select your preferred sharpness. I'd query whether anyone needs the 9 gears. Some have 5 gears and are a bit cheaper. When the container is full of very fine shavings, you just pull off the lid and empty the can. You can then clear out the shavings from around the metal mechanism. A metal pick is provided to dislodge shavings . I found a small stiff paintbrush works well for this too.The first downside. There are no useful instructions in any language but Chinese. The annotation on the box says it is a pencil eraser not a sharpener! However, it works like any other helical rotary sharpener and there's nothing to assemble. You introduce your pencil into the hole and fully engage it with a gentle push.Choose how sharp you want the point. I go for about a medium on the gear...midway.Then start cranking clockwise. I give about 8 to 10 turns but you can go all the way until resistance loosens..and your pencil will then be needle sharp with a long fine point but you may not want that level of sharpness! To release the pencil just turn the handle anti clockwise and remove the pencil. You can sharpen quite quickly. This device is for standard size 8mm wooden pencils. Round or hexagonal. I have sharpened watercolor pencils, colour pencils and ordinary graphite pencils. It is not suitable for pastel pencils or polished woodless pure graphite or charcoal pencils. You need a conventional sharpener or a craft knife for those.A final thing, you could shorten the life of your pencils..the machine certainly grinds away a lot of the pencil creating those points. You are best keeping the pencils in boxes or tins with separators which protect and hold them to preserve the points...and you certainly won't want to be dropping them. You can buy packs of plastic shields..similar to the ones provided for paintbrushes to protect the pencil tips, since broken tips mean another few tenths off your expensive art pencilsI hope these 'points' are useful. I would recommend the sharpener. I can't comment on its durability but anything looked after and used carefully usually stands the test of time.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great for getting a fine point
Easy to use and clean, and gives an excellent fine point for sketching
4.0 out of 5 stars Not suitable for Holbein’s!!!
I tried this on many different kinds and brands of pencils. Sharpener is easy to use. It hold shaving of around 50 pencils. I haven’t had a single broken pencil however Derwent 2B graphite stick chipped off at the top. Holbein pencil was completely mangled but more about that later on. It works on all shapes including triangle. You can’t adjust the length of the exposed core but you can adjust thickness of the tip just as described. I don’t think it’s exactly 0.6mm, seems more 0.7mm to me however it’s accurate enough. Do bear in mind that tip is not going to have a sharp point regardless, the very tip will always be cleanly cut off flat for coloured pencils and irregularly broken off on graphite pencils. This might be a problem for graphite artists who don’t like using sanding block. In summary, it works well on:• thicker core graphite pencils• charcoal pencils• wax coloured pencils• oil coloured pencils• colourless blendersHowever it doesn’t work on:• thiner core graphite pencils. That includes a lot of cheap brands but also Blackwing pencils. Amazingly Blackwing tip length is only 60% of the Tombow Mono 100. This sharpener really shed some light on how overpriced Blackwing’s really are. I’ve included a comparison picture of two different grade pencils sharpened on the same (highest) setting. Basically the thinner the core, the shorter the tip.• Holbein coloured pencils - it absolutely devoured mine as it would not stop automatically and the tip is just mangled. I included a picture of white Holbein and Polychromos side by side. They both started out at the same length and it would’ve eaten the pencil entirely if I didn’t pull it out without waiting for it to halt on its own.• graphite sticks. It does sharpen them to a really good length however it creates a lot of ridges on the surface. So unless you will use a sanding block, it might not be the best sharpener for them. I also had one tip chip off while inside the sharpener.Overall seems like a decent sharpener considering the low price. The blades can’t be replaced (as I have confirmed with the seller) and I am yet to see how long they will stay sharp. It would be interesting to see how this compares to Afmat version 🤔
5.0 out of 5 stars it has made my pencils amazing!
I love each setting produces a different result and what a result! ive got arthritis in one wrist and had to stop using electric sharpener it wasnt good enough. back to metal little one but arthritis was so bad because of it.saw this was erm do i dont i can i justify spending money when im only teaching myself to draw...yes its vital.its easier to empty than my basic electric one too.i could never sharpen them with a blade but this gives that result.not sure about soft professional pencils though.my only concern is getting replacement blades and paying someone to do it. probably cheaper to buy a new one but id be lost without this. shading is so much easier and details with such a fine tip.perfect for hobbyists or school even college holds SO much sharpenings its crazy.
5.0 out of 5 stars Neat tidy, Really good sharpener.
Good price. Sharpens to a nice long point. Handy size.
3.0 out of 5 stars Adequate
This sharpener gives a long point but the plastic body seems flimsy compared to an older one I had. Also sometimes difficult to get the pencil in far enough for the sharpener to sharpen the pencil.
5.0 out of 5 stars It Sharpens pencils
It sharpens pencils at different angles, quickly and efficiently.

Tried battery operated and hand turned sharpeners for a variety of pencils but most of them chewed up the leads. Chalks and water based pencils with nothing to show but stumps and piles of wood shavings. This unit has one failing, and that is getting so many pencils to very finer points with such ease I spent more time on getting them all to a great working condition (with no wastage) I wasn’t doing enough drawing. Well constructed and designed, a great buy.
super Spitze*r :-)
