5.0 out of 5 stars Great for 'background music'
This is my 3rd set of headphones from this brand. I started with the Trekz Airs: reasonably warm sound, some bass, highs were a bit lacking, then the Aeropex: detailed highs but very little bass (less than the Airs), then the OpenRun Pros: great highs and a reasonable amount of bass for bone conduction headphones - these bring together the best bits of the 2 previous generations and then polish the end result a bit. The sound from the OpenRuns is really rather pleasant, I'd give it an 8/10, and it loses 2 marks because in an A/B comparison with almost any set of in/over-ear headphones, you'd notice a huge loss in bass frequencies, but in isolation, the sound is really quite nice.So why pay £159 for a set of headphones that lack bass? Well, for me, these are about having some background music running while I'm focussed on other things: playing with/walking my dogs, doing jobs around the house etc, without being isolated from the sounds that I need to hear while doing these things. The second thing is the comfort and convenience. If I'm wearing these without music playing, I can literally forget I'm wearing them - a bit like when I look for my reading glasses and then realise I'm already wearing them. Also, no pushing things into my ears, no dropping and losing tiny earbuds in a field, no having to fiddle with putting earbuds into a case, no sweaty ears from large headphones covering my ears etc. When I'm not using these headphones, they lightly clamp to my neck - very convenient, and very quick to put back over my ears. Also, they take up very little space and are rugged enough that I can throw them into a bag without worrying about them getting damaged. Also good for dog walking in heavy rain - no worries there, unlike most large headsets. In summary, if you are lucky enough to be able to sit back on a sofa, close you eyes, shut out the outside world and focus on your music, then go for something else. If you need to be aware of what's going on around you and want nice sounding background music while you are focussed on other things, don't hesitate, get these! I do recommend tweaking the sound with the EQ in your music app though - bring down the mid frequencies a bit and bring up the high frequencies. You can also push the bass up a little bit, but it will start to distort if you push it significantly.I hope this was helpful!
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sound quality and ergonomics
In summary, if you’re wanting the best bone conducting headphones for all the positive advantages of not sticking things into your ear canals, these headphones are the best on the market for sound clarity, comfort, practicality, and even indoor phone use. There is nothing that comes close to these gen 9 Shokz. For reference, I bought four other bone conducting pairs two years ago and sent each back as they were awful. The Shokz were the only pair that were usable.Having owned the previous model for 2 years I am hoping that a bit of a comparison is of use to those considering purchasing them. I should stress that I was very happy indeed with my previous pair and my review below is a critical comparison of the two pairs and why I feel the extra cost is worth it if you can run to the new pro pair.Having left my 2 year old ‘Aftershokz’ in Portugal, I immediately bought these. I had misgiving about reports of the buzzing sensation and was anxious for their arrival. This was due to the ‘buzzing’ of the original pair which was uncomfortable at high volume. I had no need at all to be concerned. The vibrations of these ‘pro’ headphones is very subtle and not at all like the older model. The improvement is such I am so chuffed I opted for these and not the cheaper model. In use, the audio is of a far greater, and noticeable, fidelity compared with the non-pro headphones. There is more bass and it really adds that dimension needed for music listening. The ‘buzz’ is also far more subtle. It is only my opinion based on my experience of the previous model but I think I know why these are so much better. To start, the engineering improvements to the bass response means I can listen at a lower volume level than I ordinarily would have done; effectively, these are far more efficient. Then there is the headband and position of the speakers on my head. I think the band is shorter, as far less sticks out at the back. This in turn makes wearing them whilst lying more comfortable too. Lastly, either they have slightly tweaked the speaker angles or it is the shorter headband (or both) which means there is a more positive bone conductive transmission. Whatever it is, it is working for me fantastically well.Along with the upgraded headphones comes an elastic head band. I was initially confused as to what this did but quickly worked out that it goes over the head and over the back of the headband. There is a silicone bead on the inside to ensure it remains in place. Whilst this is laughably simple, it just works to not only hold them in place when exercising but ensures an even greater contact with the transmitters. The noise cancelling mics work very well indeed when in teams meetings or on the phone. I was told I sounded very clear even when workers from two doors down were drilling and I had patio doors open! I’ve not tested them outside in wind yet but I would never be chatting on the phone in such circumstances so don’t think it’s relevant.Having misplaced my last pair, it was nice that I could choose a lighter colour. Hopefully these will not be as easy to lose as a black pair on a dark coach - where I last had them.Aside from some minor, but really well thought out improvements to design and fit, the announcement voice too has been updated and is much clearer.Lastly, there is a much improved hard case which offers real protection when travelling although I am usually wearing them so I may not be getting much use out of this.
5.0 out of 5 stars Long battery life
My second pair of these as I froze my last pair running in -6c, I won’t do that again. Went for the minis as I felt the normal ones were a bit big at the back of my head. These fit perfectly. The sound is great with good clarity but obviously not as good as over ear or buds but I think it’s fine for me. They can take a while to get used to as I felt the sound was in my head but not having my ears covered I can still hold a conversation while listening to my music. They are great on runs as I can still hear cars and bikes and also the birds so from a safety point of view these are spot on. I have had them running 8 hours and the battery still didn’t die. There’s many functions like skip a song and pause music, also it’s easy to answer a call. Every call I’ve taken so far has had great clarity and no drop out unless it’s the network. They are easy to set up and pair and I found them pretty durable. A lot of headphone for the money so I think they are great value.
4.0 out of 5 stars Quite good
Not bad. Good functionality, practicality and comfort. Ok sound quality and 'all day' battery life.A bit disappointed I missed the prime day discount and feel I paid a premium, then they released version 2, so these feel obsolete.
5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely great open-ear headphones
Had this for over 8 months now; never looked back.Audio quality is great in mid-level noisy environments. I mostly use it at work so I don't have to keep putting on and taking off headphones, or while out and about; text-to-speech notifications are great, while being able to hear the outside world. The fit is great as well, and the battery lasts ages. I can use them for 2-3 hours a day without having to recharge them within 5 days.A bit difficult to hear vocal audio in extremely noisy environments, but that is expected.
They sound good and stay on
Are they as good as earbuds... that depends. Overall, the sound is very good... not as good as in-the-ear buds, but at lower volumes and around the house, for most types of music they are great... a little muffled at times, but very good. Mowing the lawn... also pretty good. Balancing sound coming in from the environment vs the music takes a little doing and you end up blocking out a lot of the environment, but not as much as with traditional buds. Speech isn't quite as good but it can be enhanced a tiny bit with an app setting. It's good enough for phone calls and podcasts. The big difference is that these things stay PUT no matter what you're doing - they don't slip out, they aren't affected by sweat, jarring... nothing and that is why I bought them. I got so sick of constantly trying to cram buds back in my sweaty ears as they slowly (or quickly) slide out. These things just stay on. BTW, the sizing is dead on - super glad I went for the smaller size, because the loop behind my head doesn't get hit or pushed around. They are also comfortable - I've worn them for hours at a time - and the battery life is better than my Samsung buds. At higher volumes, they vibrate your skin in a tickly/buzzy way, but given what they are, that's expected. I haven't felt the need to turn them up THAT high anyway as the volume is sufficient for things like mowing the lawn and vacuuming where I'm intentionally trying to drown out the machine. Zero regret purchase. Oh, and I saw some complaints on the charging system in other reviews, but I LIKE their proprietary, magnetic system. I just super don't care if I have to carry another cord... I'm already carrying, like, three of them anyway for my watch, phone, and whatever, so what's one more?
Bastante buenos
Se escuchan muy bien, la batería les dura todo el día y se carga muy rapido
My dad has been loving these
Bought these for my dad for Father's Day. He has been using these everyday. He says they are comfortable and use them while going on walks. He likes the ability to hear the surrounding and easy to answer phone calls.
Otima qualidade sonora.
Som excelente.Bateria dura bastante e carrega muito rapido.Muito bom!
they are not meant to cancel noise!
This is a product designed to allow you to listen wirelessly but also to be aware of your surroundings. It does not go into your ear! The point is NOT to block outside noise. Why is it great? Because if you are in a situation where you need to be aware of what is going on around you, then you need these headphones. To hear traffic, others needing your attention, or other noises to warn of your surroundings, you need your ears. These work through bone-conduction.I chose these because I am a window cleaner and they were mentioned on a blog. I've worn traditional in-ear headphones and am continually removing one to hear someone speak to me. When I'm in a house, I want to hear the owner instead of them having to tap me, or scare me by me not hearing them approach. But I love listening to audio books while I work, and/or take a call if I need to. These are the PERFECT solution. They are not meant to be audio perfect for high quality audiophiles - that kind of listening is meant for noise cancelling over-ear phones. These are GOOD quality listening, perfect for audio books, radio, talking on the phone and music, but don't expect huge deep base.I find them EXTREMELY comfortable, and often forget they are on. This model has excellent battery length (10 hours) and recharge quickly. Perfect for my longer days for the commute, work day and return. I bought them for the 10 hours versus lower priced versions at 8 hours. I didn't want to have to recharge in the daytime.I've used them for calls and they are great. I can't believe the RANGE of the bluetooth versus other earbuds I've had. These are exceptional. I can go between floors (1st to 2nd, etc.) and still be connected. I'm not sure the actual distance, but it must be around 50'+? Dependent upon what is between you and the sending device. They are lightweight, and I love the magnetic recharge connection. These were shipped quickly and arrived ahead of schedule.I could not be happier. I will report again after I've had them for a month or two of work.Well worth the expense!
