5.0 out of 5 stars Pricey but adorable and amazing sound quality
Roberts have done it again and managed to squeeze their full-bodied and warm sound with impressive bass into a pint-pot. Everything about this radio oozes nostalgia and charm, yet it's bang up to date with DAB radio, Bluetooth, Aux in and an OLED display. Quality of craftmanship is what you would expect from Roberts, there's no cheap plastics here and it feels solid and well built. On the rear there's a micro USB socket to charge and power the radio (you can power it from USB whilst it charges), a 3.5mm external aerial socket and an aux-in 3.5mm stereo jack. Sadly there's no headphone socket. On the front there's a knob which sadly is not for volume control but changes stations or options in the menus. To control the volume there's up and down buttons on the front. The display is very small, but extremely clear and contrasty given it's OLED. There are menus that you can dive into to adjust a few settings, a sleep timer, preset memories and brightness. The radio has both DAB and FM and whilst a short wire antenna is provided to plug in the back, I found the radio isn't that sensitive (compared to my little Sony DAB radio) and so unless you live in a very strong DAB reception area you might want to try better antenna options. When the radio charges there's a red LED that lights up behind the speaker grill, and a blue LED similarly when using bluetooth mode. It pairs up easily with bluetooth devices and even displays the track names of your MP3s etc on the radio screen. Sound quality is very impressive for the size of this radio. There's an amazing depth and richness to the sound that you would not expect from such a tiny unit. Shame the big knob on the front doesn't control volume, and given the volume is 'stepped' it's hard to get the radio to play very quietly at a reasonable level. I found whilst working at home with it close to me I often had the volume set to 1, a bit louder would have been nice but then 2 feels too loud. Needless to say it gets pretty loud and punchy once you go up the scale! The radio has a built-in rechargeable battery and on average listening at low volume to the DAB radio with the display brightness on max, it usually gives me around 12 hrs or so of play time. Overall I love this little radio, but I do wish they released something of similar design with internet radio, and that you could use the knob for volume instead of up/down buttons. I would also like to have a headphone socket but I can live without that!
5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning and thoroughly recommended
I read all the glowing reviews online, particularly the professional ones, before buying. All I can say is they're right. it's quite expensive for such a small radio, but worth every penny. Sound quality is amazing for its size - the rear facing bass radiator makes all the difference. Controls are basic and perhaps slightly quirky, but intuitive. They're somewhat limited, but who needs sophisticated controls in a small portable when standard quality is so good? All the essentials are there. I haven't yet tried aux or bluetooth inputs, but DAB/DAB+ and FM are very good, easily picking up everything available where I live. There are negative online comments about the wire aerial, but I already had a Roberts clock radio with one so knew what to expect. For me, reception is almost as good with the wire coiled up behind the radio as extended, but that may not be the case everywhere and it may need to be extended. I think it looks better without a telescopic aerial. My only negative comment is the use of a micro USB port for charging - a current up-market product should be using USB-C, a much more positive fit. Having said that, the charging cable supplied is top quality and fitted with a ferrite, so I'm using it for charging other devices such as my tablet and charges more reliably.
5.0 out of 5 stars Overall an excellent product, though there are a few things...
First let me get the basics out of the way - this looks great and sounds great. I bought two mini DAB+ radios recently, and I don't regret either - the other is much lighter, and more pocketable. But isn't a Bluetooth speaker and doesn't sound as warm. This sounds shockingly good for a small radio - but do not think it's pocket size. From the front it is, but it's very thick. The reception is good - but if you need a bit extra, the easy to lose and ugly wire external antenna will disappoint. It's also not much better than the built-in antenna in my area. The sound is warm and gentle - nice for a background music in a quiet room. Better than the pocket radio I bought and well-suited to the intended audience looking something with a vintage feel. There are a couple anachronisms in the design that detract from it - and I'm not referring to the fact it's DAB+ and Bluetooth. Those are technical features to make a vintage design useful in the modern world. I'm referring to design anachronisms.First, and most visible most of the time is the monochrome OLED display. This is a relatively modern display tech and feels very cold. While for DAB a display is clearly essential, the other pocket radio I bought has an amber-backlit monochrome LCD display. Still 1980s-esque, and an anachronism for the radio's design, but not nearly so harsh and obvious as the OLED display.Second is the blue LED for Bluetooth. Monochromatic blue LEDs are modern, cold, harsh and go against the rest of the design aesthetic. A warm white LED with a blue filter over it would look much more like a classic indicator lamp and allow "blue" to be portrayed with a much warmer feeling.Oh, and one usability thing - a back button would be nice :)
Tolles Radio
It’s a great product
Service was good and the product is fantastic
