5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant laptop, but dude where is my RGB?
(function(){ P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function'){ A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })() The G14 is a brilliant laptop for its size. I have the AMD Series 9 7040HS coupled with the RTX4080, this to me was the sweet spot to protect me for having to upgrade for at least the next couple of years. The laptop comes with 32GB of 4800 DDR5 RAM. Unfortunately this is split between 16GB soldered to the motherboard and a further 16 taking up the spare slot. I would have hoped for 32GB to have been soldered to the MB (if this had to be the case) leaving the spare slot free. This does limit the adding of extra memory to a further 16GB, by removing the 16GB SODIMM and replacing it with a 32GB SODIMM. Remember to only use 4800MHz modules, as you will get no benefit from adding higher! The SSD that came with the laptop was a 1TB Samsung, and I immediately replaced this with the 4TB Samsung 990 Pro. The speed increase as well as the added storage are impressive! So, I was a little disappointed, as the keyboard on the G14 appears to be non-LED and therefore you are stuck with the pure white backlight. As most of my keyboards have a blue backlight (don't ask!) and believing that the keyboard would be multicolour, I seemed to be missing this part!. After trawling some the chat sites, it appears as though Asus treat this as something of pot luck, and those that do notice have been getting partial refunds for the loss of a function. So I would suggest you confirm what you are buying, unlike me or there could be a touch of buyers remorse in that area.So overall (forgetting the keyboard lighting) I am extremely pleased with the laptop, it is light, quiet and powerful. Sure, you can upgrade it a bit (recommended) to really make the beast your own. Will it turn heads, well... if you enable the animatrix on the cover maybe, but really this functions better as a sleeper powerhouse. It would be equally at home in the office, as much as at a LAN party... so what are you waiting for?
1.0 out of 5 stars IF YOU WANT A GAMING MACHINE, THIS AINT THE ONE FOR YOU! :(
If a gaming laptop is what you are looking for then this is not for you - 100% mission abort! On paper the AMD config [CPU + GPU] should communicate well together to produce a smooth gaming experience. However, no matter how you adjust settings for GPU, fans or power etc. frame rate is pretty low, the CPU struggles to the point that is becomes unusable. Playing Fortnite the graphics card is unable to produce any fine detail and at times it cant produce colour correctly. I have an Nvidia 3070Ti that blows the Raedeon RX6800S out of the water. It has never let me down and produces excellent results every single time. The core temperatures reach between 85-90c very quickly and you can literally smell the insides cooking even when the fans are on full belt!Speaking of temperatures, the machine has no effective cooling not just for gaming but it seems to overheat even when performing basic windows tasks or when at idle. The keyboard becomes defunct due to the heat as it is too hot to touch and my fans sounded absolutely terrible. I am not just talking your typical fan noise but they made a creaky snapping like sound that could only be drowned out by the use of headphones. Another thing to consider is that the vents face on to the screen of the device due to the engineering of Asus hinges. I would be concerned long term about the screen life as even though I am sure his has been tested, I cant see that it is heat-proof. As the temperatures run hot 95% of the time I used it, I would have concerned for the heat reducing screen quality and life. The screen quality of the 120Hz config is really poor. Colour accuracy is rubbish and the sharpness, contrast and brightness lets the device down big time. I have a Google Pixel 8 and the screen quality is better on there than the laptop. When you are gaming the screen mode changes with filters that you can manually change but the temperature colours give a magenta and blue tint that is really over done. It ruins any colour accuracy and makes shadows too dark and contrasts too black when gaming. This can make movement in games diffcult to detect or make your reactions and responses delayed. The keyboard travel time is pretty good and the keyboard is extremely easy to adapt to. The only issue is the RGB backlight. It is extremely faint and is barely visible through the keys. Bare this in mind if backlighting is important to you. The track pad is very good and responsive. The laptop is very portable and light for a 'gaming' laptop. I really cant use this for gaming in any way shape or form. I had to return it as it is unable to function for gaming unless you just like to play solitaire. AAA games are going to struggle every single time! I am still to be convinced that a small form factor is able to produce the same qualities for gaming as a 15.6"+ can. Someone please prove me wrong as I would really like a great 14" gaming laptop. All I know is that this is not it!
5.0 out of 5 stars Forget the 4000 series
Yes it has minor backlight bleed, yes the trackpad is slightly loose HOWEVER the laptop itself is amazing, built like a tank, weighs so light and much better IMO than th eLegion 7 build quality. The performance is top quality, on par with a 4070 however not £3000 so basically half the price. The battery is amazing easy getting 8 hours video playback and browsing. The speakers are very good for a windows laptop and using dolby atmos they sound great. The screen is really nice, colourful and is bright enough for a great experience. Mine has the usual top bezel light bleed due to the clamping force of the plastic frame however only notable on a completely black background,Playing Warzone 2.0 at 120FPS high quality at 1440p is amazing and DayZ on Extreme getting around 90-110 FPS.Yes its not the new gen chips however i cant justify the jump in price especially with how well this sexy laptop performs.Just buy it and ignore any haters :-)
4.0 out of 5 stars Very aesthetically pleasing, but no Anime Matrix and overheats
The Laptop is great, very high quality screen and the white colour way looks amazing. Battery life is very impressive and it is very light. This is basically a Macbook that can game. Normal Usage it is extremely quiet and stays very cool. The Rx 6800s performs similar to a PC RTX 3060ti or Rx 6650XT and competes with the laptop gpus like RTX 3080 or RTX 4060.The reasons for 4 star: The Laptop doesn’t come with the anime matrix as advertised. Every-time you want to use the dedicated GPU, you need to change mode, which means restarting your laptop. Once in GPU mode, it heats up so much. While playing Warzone CPU temp reaches 93’C and GPU temp reaches 85’C. This makes the keyboard unusable. So if you want to game, it is best to use it with external keyboard at the same time fans become loud as expected, so playing with speakers is not the best choice.
