5.0 out of 5 stars Very good music performance.
In the six weeks since I purchased the Shokz Openfit earbuds on 18 November 2023 from Bolo UK (for £152), I have been able to quite thoroughly test them. I am an audiophile, a lover of classical music, with a background in professional recording, and I have been enjoying using Sony’s over-ear noise-cancelling headphones for the last four years, but I wanted a pair of discreet headphones to wear in social environments.Generally, the Shokz Openfit earbuds have impressed me. They are quite simple, they are a bit slow to respond to touch commands, but their speakers are almost as good as those in the Sony over-ear noise-cancelling XMRs, which are almost twice as expensive. Using the "Poweramp" app I have created a setting which increases the Shokz’s bass performance considerably and the Openfit speakers can handle it.The things which I have had to learn in using the Shokz Openfit earbuds are as follows. You switch the Shokz on and off by taking them out of or putting them back in their case. For this reason one ought to pop their little carrying case into a pocket. If you don’t want to switch them off but you want to keep them on your ears but not listen to them for a while, then double-tapping on the top of the left ear-bud will pause performance. When you take the Openfit buds out of the case and pop them in your ears, you only need to enable bluetooth on your phone for the buds to become connected and then start playing by way of your music-playing app. However, if after popping the buds in your ears you open the Shokz app on your phone and allow it, instead, to switch on your phone’s bluetooth then the Shokz app will tell you how much charge is in the earbuds and how much charge is left in the case, and that is helpful information to know at the start of a listening session. Note that the charge information shown in the app does not alter during a session: it only changes when you start a new listening session via the Shokz app.The Shokz Openfit buds reliably respond to touch commands but the responses are a little slower than what I have become used to while using my Sony XMRs. For example, when I double-tap the left earbud to re-start a track, performance does not begin for about a second. However, when I double-tap the right earbud the next track fades in immediately. It took me a while to learn that decreasing and increasing volume depends not upon tapping the left or right earbud, but on holding the finger on the left or right earbud until such time as the volume I want is achieved (each incremental decrease or increase being indicated by a beep in the buds, over the music). So keep your finger on the bud and wait. Remove your finger when the Shokz has reached the volume you want. The Openfit earbuds are delicate little things to handle but on the ears they are perhaps the most visually discreet of all currently available earbuds - and I don't have to worry about them falling off my ears. I think that if they are handled with care they will not break.I always wear glasses, so I was pleased to find that indeed the very thin loops of the Openfit earbuds do not raise the arms of spectacles much or cause any other problem.I think it would have been better for the case to be made of shiny plastic rather than having a satin finish, as the satin finish wears away in places due to friction with the fabric of pockets, and the satin finish is also marred by slight grease or oil marks from one’s fingers, although these can be rubbed away with a damp cloth.I interacted a number of times with Shokz’s customer service via email in order to ensure that I was covered under the warranty, and Shokz’s customer service provided me with satisfactory answers generally within 48 hours.Lastly, my journey to the Shokz Openfit earbuds was quite gruelling. I started off by buying Samsung’s "Galaxy Buds Live", at £69 on Bolo. These interacted brilliantly with my Samsung phone but unfortunately the buds would not stay securely in my ears. Samsung’s Customer Service offered to send me thin silicone sleeves to envelope the lower part of each bud, to stop them slipping out of the oily channels of my ears, but I chose not to try this make-shift remedy. The "Galaxy Buds Live" are most probably wonderful provided you have ears which have cartiledge ridges which will hold the "beans" securely. They were also a third of the price of the Shokz Openfit earbuds. So I next moved to buds with a loop going over the ear, to ensure they would never fall out, and chose the "Nagfak Open Ear Headphones" at £69.99. I thought their four-position arms would ensure that the speakers married with the geography of my particular ears, but in fact I found that everyone has to open them to the fourth position in order for them to sit well on the ear. So the four positions of the arms is just a way of making the buds more compact when in their case. But quite soon I found that the "Nagfak Open Ear Headphones" cannot provide a reasonable bass although they are no doubt fine for listening to spoken programmes. From the "Nagfak Open Ear Headphones" I moved up to the Shokz Openfit buds.I will edit this review if the Shokz buds take a turn for the worse, but so far they have performed well.I hope this review is helpful for others considering the bewildering array of open-ear buds now available.Update: 21 January 2024. I am still very impressed with the sound quality of the speakers in these ear buds. I have also discovered that their receptivity is sensitive enough for them to be able to continue playing a track from my phone when I have moved four rooms along in my house, from where I have left the phone (the walls are all stud-partitions). One downbeat is that after leaving the charging case and ear-buds untouched for seven days I was surprised to return to them and find that the case and the buds had completely lost their charges. I wrote to Shokz about this and they replied saying that this is normal. Well, it is obviously normal for the OpenFit case and ear-bud batteries but it is not normal for some other headphones, such as my Sony XMRs, which lose no charge whatsoever after having been left alone for a month. However, this short battery-life of the OpenFits is not a severe problem, as one just needs to remember that if intending to use the OpenFits again after 7 days or more of non-use they will have to be charged up beforehand.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!Wow!Wow!
Scuse the pun but I was SHOCKED!!!! I was exoecting the sound quality to be good. I dis not anticipate spectacular. It messes with your head because you find yourself weather you are listening to Bose/Sonos speakers in a room or if you have bose over your ears. And then you realise its not the case. Super expensive, but worth every £1. Superior sound quality. The depth is unreal. The bass quality is simply lit. 10/10. One of my greatest ever investments. Just don't be taking them with you on a night out drinking because you will cry if you lose one or both of them. Buy a £30 pair for those occassions. Stress free. Hiiiiighly recommend. Nope, not sponsored. Yep complete honest review feom personal experience. I used to he a DJ so my ears are real fussy. Depth of bass is fundamental, along with clarity of sound. Imagine not having the need to have the volume near full to get a decent experience. Fantastic.
4.0 out of 5 stars I like them a lot but room for improvements
I really liked the idea of an open ear headphones as I often needed to be open to the world when playing music but also more importantly when I need to make calls, I want to be able to hear myself properly.I have a lot of issues with headphones and found that over ear or even any with a bar for the top or back of my head just give me a headache so for years I've had in-ear headphones. For years I've had Bose ANC headphones which I love (and also don't fall out) however when using for audio I changed the earpieces when doing voice call and only use the proper earpieces when on flights or traveling. Unfortunately, you can't get them anymore, so I decided to do a different direction and try open earbuds. I first tried Bose again but after 3 days I returned as they were not right for me and had loads of issues with them. (Read the Bose ultra open earbuds review if you want to know more)So after returning the Bose I tried SHOKZ. They were cheaper so I was expecting to not be quite as good a Bose however in the end I would say they were a much better choice. Sound quality is good, they could be better but for an open ear they work well. They do bleed a little if you have them up too high (especially if you have increased the base) but most of the time they are good. I have not noticed any audio breakage in music and the range is quite good meaning I don't need to have my phone nearby. The multipoint Bluetooth is also perfect for me as I want to be able to use them to pay audio on my phone but also quickly switch to my laptop for voice/video calls. This I would say is my favourite part of them.Others mentioned that the controls are intermittent but I've yet to notice that when I was testing. There is a beep returned to confirm selection that was sometimes delayed but the actual action itself was fast for me and works every time.I would say the options/controls are very basic. You are limited on what you can pick for each action and the actions are limited to just 4 where other companies offer a much wider set and flexibility. i.e. Double tap and long tap are the only two options where others have single tap, double tap, triple tap, long tap and even "quick tap then long tap". Personally, I would like to enable start/top on the right ear and next track on the left ear but they don't allow that as an option and instead it's the other way around.Unfortunately, they don't provide auto volume adjustment based on the background noise. Personally, I would prefer ANC instead (yes, I know this is open ear but even still it would work) to lower some background nosie while on a voice call instead of increasing volume but either way this is also a bit of a gap to other providers. I hope they fix this in a futer software update.Battery live is better than I expected. Bose claimed longer but in reality they drained much faster than these. For simular length voice calls I had 60% battery left where Bose only had 40%. This is totally different to what the reviews stated. But in general, they core elements as to why I purchased are there and I'm quite happy with them however I have just returned them due to defect in the left ear headset. It's not fitting quite right on my ear and flaps around. Looking at it closely I think a replacement will fix the issue so I've sent them back for a new pair to see how those go.
5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing
The SHOKZ OpenFit headphones are amazing! The sound quality is surprisingly good, and I love that I can still hear what's going on around me. They’re super comfortable, even for long listening sessions, and perfect for workouts or running since they don’t fall out. If you want great sound and awareness of your surroundings, these are definitely worth it!
1.0 out of 5 stars Awful build quality.
At the start, they're great. Sound quality is good and I like how light they are on your ear. Now though, after only owning them for 6 months, the charging has gone faulty, so they either don't charge when plugged in or in the case, or don't disconnect from the phone when put in the case. I definitely expected them to last longer for the price.I've contacted shokz and received no reply, so it's safe to say I'm a bit disappointed.
Great audio quality and comfort.
I've struggled over the years to find good lightweight earbuds that produce an overall good sound quality while providing comfort and stability. These earbuds were a match made in heaven.SOUND: It's not the same level of sound quality as you'd get from traditional over-ear studio quality headphones (i.e. Sennheiser 280 pro), but compared to other earbuds - both open-ear and in-ear style - it exceeded expectation. The app allows you to choose from some EQ presets and create your own custom EQ presets so you can tweak the EQ bands to your liking, which is a great feature.COMFORT: The nice soft rubber hoops that go around the ear are very gentle against the skin (I have sensitive skin, so I was pleased with that). They're sturdy enough to keep these buds in place even when moving/exercising. They're easy to just keep on as you go about your day, which is the first for me - I've had other earbuds before but my ears would always end up feeling sore after an hour of wearing them. With the OpenFit, I can keep them in for hours without feeling the urge to take them out.STABILITY: Their design is flawless - they fit nice and snug into the antihelix of the ear and loop around the back of the ear to keep them safe and secure. No issues!VALUE: They're more expensive than budget brands while less expensive than other highly rated open-ear options, making the price point reasonable. I was lucky enough to have purchased them while they were on sale and selling for close to the same price as the Openfit Air model, but I still recommend them at full price as I believe they're worth the investment, especially if you're like me and can't do in-ear headphones and are looking for a durable, quality option for exercise and/or daily life.OVERALL: Best open-ear headphones I've ever owned, I absolutely love them and recommend them to everyone.
Super comfortable, features exactly as described
I've waited to review until I'd had and used these a good bit to be able to give my honest review and after a month of use I can say that I love these and would absolutely recommend them and buy them again.I have never found a pair of ear buds that don't cause me extreme pain in my ears, neck, shoulders, and head. I've tried all manner of ear buds, from super cheap to really expensive, and these are the first set of ear buds that I can wear all day without any pain whatsoever. It took a little getting used to the way that they fit because they did sort of feel like they were on the verge of falling out when I first got them, but this is just due to a different design than I've ever experienced and they're actually quite secure and not going anywhere. I do find myself forgetting that I have them on and will walk around with nothing playing, wearing them for hours sometimes. Even as a glasses wearer, I don't find myself having any problems with comfort or secure fit.The sound quality is honestly the best I've experienced in all of the ear buds I've tried. I'm super impressed with the bass they're able to achieve, and it is sort of a "sound is in your head" kind of experience. I've used them for listening to music, watching YouTube, watching TV shows and movies, and have never felt that I needed to adjust the EQ. They really just sound great for all uses, in my opinion.I love the way that you put them into pairing mode - I did have to look up a YouTube video on how to do it because I struggled to understand the instructions provided, but it's actually really easy and reliable, and one of the easier pairing experiences I've had. I have a few pairs of headphones/ear buds that are a major pain to pair and fall out of being paired randomly, and I've had none of those issues with these.I haven't had any issues with the touch controls not working right, though I don't use these for running and it seems the majority of reviewers having issues with the touch controls are runners who experience sweat, so that could be why I've had no issues. I'm a stay at home mom who works part time from home and home schools my kid, so my typical use of these is while sitting at a computer working, or while walking around my home doing school or chores. They're not super noise canceling and they don't have the longest battery life but that is exactly as advertised. Being open ear fit they couldn't possibly be noise canceling (though they do actually drown out most sound pretty well if the volume is up high), which is actually what I need in ear buds as a stay at home mom who needs to be able to hear my kid at all times. I don't want to give these a low review on noise cancellation or battery life because they're clearly advertised as not being noise canceling, and also clearly advertised that the ear buds themselves only have a 7 hour battery life and the case has a 28 hour battery life, so it would seem unfair to lower their rating over something that you're advertised before even buying. Maybe in future models they'll be able to increase the battery life, but until then it is totally fine with me as someone who is home pretty much at all times and able to recharge without issue.I am super happy with these, and so pleased to have finally found ear buds I can wear without pain. After years of searching, I finally found a pair that works for me and actually sounds great, too.
Gut
Top !
Vraiment top !
