5.0 out of 5 stars On the whole recommended, just cable is too short
I was using an SSD (1Tb Samsung Evo 860) in a sata enclosure for my Apple Photos drive. Linked to an Apple Mac Mini with 16mb of RAM I was getting significant lag editing photos and scrolling through 40k+ photos.I switched to this device with a Sabrent Rocket 1Tb M2 NVMe drive in an attempt to get round the lag. The faster write/read speeds in conjunction with the Thunderbolt housing has thankfully reduced almost all the perceptible lag, and only video editing (4k GoPro) now seems to make it work hard.I'm not into monitoring numbers, there are plenty on here who live by that mantra. For my own personal purposes with this configuration it solved my issues. You need to initialise the drive before use using Apple Disk Utility . My O/S version is OS-X big sur (11.2.3 as of mar-21), drive was formatted as APFS / GUID partition map.Pros: Easy to install, tool free, no screw required (twist lock screw included), very dense aluminium casing, nicely made, matches mac lighting / design, seems a decent step up from SSD/SataCons: Proprietary cable with lugs (see photo), cable is too short, cant buy another longer cable that I can see so far
5.0 out of 5 stars Well Built and Works Perfectly. No Disconnection Errors!
Straight away, I could tell this is a superior product. The fit and finish is excellent. The quality of the materials is evident in the smoothness of the edges, the reassuring weight of the enclosure and the secure fitting of the cover. It was very easy to install my Western Digital SN750 NVME SSD. The instructions are simple and the SSD is held in place securely. I was worried by other reviews that said the cable had indents one of the plugs. I am happy to tell you the good news that Sabrent have obviously listened to these complaints because the one I received has no notches or bumps and uses a standard thunderbolt 3 cable. I haven't bothered with benchmarking because it seems just as fast in practice as my previous enclosure BUT this one does not randomly disconnect when I am writing or copying to the SSD. No more annoying error notifications nor crashed applications. This enclosure has a rock solid connection that does not disconnect at all! This is why I bought Sabrent and why the other, unreliable enclosure will probably go to recycling.
4.0 out of 5 stars Very fast but only works with thunderbolt
Really good portable solution for my macs but doesn’t connect with anything but Thunderbolt 3 cable and computer port. I had assumed it would also work with USBC but more slowly.
5.0 out of 5 stars Good Quality, Great Speeds
Good Product the only issue I could say is that the locking bracket for the M.2 SSD is a bit naff a screw would be a lot better its not an issue in day to day use at all though I could see it being a problem if you drop the enclosure I can see your SSD flying across the Starbucks floor because of the flimsy locking bracket
5.0 out of 5 stars Worked well!
Used for transferring a spreadsheet on to another computer - did exactly what it was supposed to and worked well.
3.0 out of 5 stars Beware - not full speed.
This is a fantastic looking and feeling unit, really high quality, but unfortunately it only operates at half of the TB3 bus speed, meaning your NVMe drive will be limited to about 1300mbps, regardless of how fast the drive can go. It's a shame as it's otherwise a fantastic product.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fast drive and great for pro video work,
Really happy with this product. I have 2 2TB WD Blue SN550 NVMe SSD in there and although the write speed isn't great at about 1100MB the read speed is brilliant 2300MB, this is running in Raid 1 (Client Video work so needed the redundancy) via thunderbolt 3 on a 2020 Macbook Pro. Perfect for working on large projects. Build Quality is excellent and comes with a thunderbolt cable. It is a little trick to get the drives into place but not too difficult. Definitely recommend this
5.0 out of 5 stars It Works!
It Works!
Solid, well built, extremely easy to use, just works
I bought this for a new Mac Mini M2 Pro I bought so it could have a huge, fast external drive for various projects. Use was as dead simple as it can be. You turn a very easy to use semi-circular handle that flips up, remove the metal panel, snap in your NVMe card, replace the panel and turn the handle back to its original position, plug it into a Thunderbolt/USB C port, and you are done. It takes less time to install a drive in it and get it hooked up than it took me time to write this. Fast transfer speeds that take advantage of Thunderbolt 3/4. Heat is not a problem even with intense use, and its so rugged I bet I could throw it up against a brick wall and it would hurt the wall before harming itself. The design seems, well, Apple-like in its ease of use and functionality. (Remember the easy-to-remove side doors of PowerMac G5’s and MacPros? It’s that well made.) Can’t think of how I would improve on it. Well worth the money.
Solidly built enclosure; some compatibility issues
The enclosure is really well built, with high quality metal and precision tolerances. Installation is very easy yet sturdy, with the screw lock and the rubber hold tips. Although the rubber hold tips seem flimsy at first glance, in reality once the lid is locked closed with the thermal heatsink pads installed, the rubber tips are wholly unnecessary; those drives aren't going anywhere.Be aware of what you're getting into with this enclosure. It supports Thunderbolt 3 and up only. You cannot connect this enclosure via USB 3.2. If you have Thunderbolt 3, the performance is well worth it. Drives installed in this enclosure are just as fast as those installed on motherboard slots. On some of my Linux systems the second drive in the enclosure is intermittently not detected, but it works perfectly on other systems so I don't think the enclosure is at fault here.If you intend to open up this enclosure and swap internal drives frequently, be aware that there are two different types of thermal pads that come with the enclosure: a 1.2mm thick pad for single-sided drives and a 0.8mm thick pad for double-sided drives. You must use the correct type of pad. If the pad is too thin for the drive type then it won't contact the drive for heat transfer; if it's too thick then the enclosure won't be able to close. Once a thermal pad is installed, you cannot peel it off without ruining it. If you need to deal with both types of drives, you could install one pad of each type (the enclosure supports two internal drives after all), but this is not suitable for RAID configurations where you want both drives to be of the same type. For RAID installations where you want to swap drives frequently, I recommend buying two enclosures, putting the thick thermal pad in one and the thin one in the other. Some drives come with pre-installed copper stickers for heat transfer, and are too thick even for the thin thermal pads. You can peel off the copper stickers and just use the thermal pads from the enclosure; this will work, but peeling off any stickers likely voids your drive warranty, so be aware of the consequences. The other option is to purchase even thinner (say 0.5mm) thermal pads from a third party.
Favorite cable!
These are my favorite cable for editing on the go. Fast, sturdy, quality.
read product description - these are thunderbolt 3 cables, not 4, my mistake, not theirs.
Well build cables, but note that they are t3 and not t4. They are described well, and I just missed that in the title. I still need t3 cables, but they are simply slower and handle less power that t4's. A good value, and arrived quickly. Thanks!
Bought for my LUMIX S5iix as a Cable TO SSD
This cable works amazing, transfer speeds are as it says and its the proper length i need.i use this cable with my SAMSUNG T7 and i need extreme high bitrate speeds, this cable is LEGIT.10/10 would recommend.
