R. G. LeTourneau's Overland Trains: a complete history

Description:

About this item:

Between 1953 and 1961, R. G. LeTourneau built six Overland Trains. These enormous trackless rubber-tired trains were designed to reduce logistics limitations on undeveloped or non-existent roads. They could carry heavy loads over sand, jungle, and the snow and ice. When President Eisenhower announced the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line development in 1954, R. G. LeTourneau, Inc. started developing Overland Trains for an Artic environment.

Mark Moore takes you through a complete history of the Overland Trains, from the Army's nuclear Overland Train ambitions, digging for gold in Nome, and the stories about some of the most iconic big machines in our history. He interviewed service members and civilians who worked on and around the machines, with details and accounts that you won't find in any other publication. Join Moore as he takes you through the journey that is R. G. LeTourneau's Overland Trains.

Author is too close to his subject.RG LeTourneau can't do anything wrong in the author's eyes and this comes across in the number of faults and failures in the vehicles which are glossed over. Some good photographic records, but a future edition may be improved by schematics/wiring diagrams illustrating how DC and AC power was distributed from the generators. The author assumes of the reader a good general knowledge of the difference between AC and DC, regenerative braking, diesel engines etc., some further background information may be handy for the less engineering adept.

Very interesting............

I like technical subjects and objects and once saw a YouTube show about the company so it was great to have a well done book with more details I could read at my leisure.

Specialized and unique

If you are interested in these vehicles you know what this is about. It is great that the author dug into this and provided a great summary, description and history. I am an engineer and would love to have more tech and drawings but for almost any normal person this will satisfy your curiosity of these really interesting machines.

If you enjoy reading about unusual vehicles, this may be a book for you.

I've always liked unusual vintage vehicles [I've had hundreds, from Tatra to Rolls-Royce], and as I'm reading this detailed book, I am learning so much about these land trains. My only complaint is the cost of the book, but it's worth it.
