As an IBS sufferer i often get bowel flare up and on some occasions im left not knowing if somethimg more sinister is going on.As such the ability to test stools for blood if quite a useful test for me.The test isnt the most pleasant thing to carry out and my first test was negative which is good of course .I cant say of its efficacy to pick up blood as ive not had a positive but equally the test should only be used as a an extra indicator as to possible problems and bowel health.Blood can come for very minor tears as well as more serious issues so as i say it should only be used as an indicator and then to contact your doctor for further advise. It is great to be able to test yourself at home though , just dont let the test scare the life out of you.

This is similar to the Faecal Occult Blood test offered to all patients over the age of 50 - 60 years on the NHS.I got some of my information from the NHS page on Bowel Screening, and you should consider looking there as well. The test looks for the presence of haemaglobin in the stool, even at low concentrations.High concentrations of blood, and 'fresher blood' from lower down in the gastrointestinal tract are more likely to be picked up.Lower concentrations of blood and 'older blood' from higher up in the GI tract are less likely to be picked up.The instructions are not very clear on how exactly to collect your stool specimen. The NHS website states you should collect your stool 'dry', and not let it fall into the toilet water. There is no mention of this on the AssuTest instructions. In any case, you scratch your poo with the applicator in 3 places, and then place it in the sample container.Once the top is tightly on, shake the sample up vigorously with the buffer liquid. Then, similar to a pregnancy test, you squeeze 3 drops of the liquid onto the test strip and wait 5 minutes. If 2 lines appear it is a positive test, and if there is one line, then it is a negative test.Bowel cancer is the 4th most cancer in the UK, and the FOB test is a fairly good screening test, picking up 95 - 99% of samples which have haemaglobin from blood. If a positive test occurs, you would see your GP, who would probably want to repeat the test, and then go on to arrange a colonoscopy. Why might you get a positive test?Well, it might be a bowel cancer which is bleeding. That's the thing you want to pick up.Earlier diagnosis of bowel cancer often means a higher chance of cure. However there are plenty of other reasons to have blood in your stool. These include...Bleeding haemorrhoids.Medicines such as aspirin & anticoagulants which thin the blood and increase the risk of bleeding.Female Menstrual Blood, if the stool sample wasn't kept separate. No doubt there are other causes as well. Check the instruction sheet. Why might you get a negative test? You might have cancer, but just aren't bleeding into your gut !!Sometimes bleeding is intermittent, and you tested your stool at a non-bleeding time.Sometimes you are bleeding, but the blood is distributed unevenly in the stool, and you just happened not to sample the right bit.Or maybe the test just wasn't quite sensitive enough to detect blood at a very low concentration. It looks like the test was manufactured in China, and then gained the certification assessment mark CE0197, which means it has been certified for use within the EU. The specifics of that certification are a little more difficult to find out. I think the importing company presents details about their product to an organisation called TUV in Rhineland, Germany, and TUV certifies the product. I suspect that the hoops they had to jump through to get that certification are not the same as the hoops a British or European company would have to jump through. It makes me a little wary & cautious about trusting such products.I haven't done the test yet, but will do so soon. I will feedback here if there are any issues.
