I am really glad I did this test, it was interesting finding out who I am genetically & discovered things I genuinely didn't know about my pedigree. That said, nearly all the info required a membership to enable you to access any of it. You take take out out a membership for a limited period of time for a small amount, but then it will automatically go on to a full paying monthly subscription. To stop this you need to cancel by the end of the temporary period. I think due to the quite high cost of the testing kit you should have a 7 day membership included, otherwise the results just become 'teasers' telling you you have connections, but no way of accessing them! That said, I am very glad I did the test & did choose a temp membership so I could access info, which was fascinating!

I bought this a bit of a giggle for my birthday. I had done extensive research for years into forefathers and mothers. With 7 years of higher education behind me I do things correct by checking and rechecking sources. Also, my mother had first-hand knowledge of her relatives going back several generations ( to mid19th C) I have a variety of documentation. However, I would like to find further back because that's where it gets more difficult. I very much doubt my Grandfather was what what they said he was. Why would my great grandparents, parents come over to Glasgow and say she was born in the poorhouse why would they say that if she was born elsewhere. Why would they? Ancestry say my Grandfather was nearly 100% from else where. The documentation says not. And that put a question mark on my son's DNA sample analysis. I phoned Ancestry. They sent my some paper. Not a fully credited paper or from several reliable sources. My grandfather and mother were Christain Socialists, her mother was what would be called a feminists, who like a drink. They wer all political with a small 'p'. This background would have been mentioned and my grandparents would not have endorsed lies.I suggested there had been possible mistakes. This they dismissed. I refute their findings. Also I wanted to find out further back. So the whole exercise has been very disapointing,full of major errors based of assumptions of my home area. Most people go on Ancestry and just go along with what other have falsely discovered. e.g. My spinster great aunt was said to be married and lived in London. I knew her; she was a carer for 2 severely disabled siblings in Glasgow. This while hold down a job.If you are lazy and do not want to know the real truth Ancestry may be useful. Otherwise the old ways just basic research. That takes time and money.

Easy to do. Register the kit, spit into the vial, seal up, send off, await results. Mine processed in 4 weeks and the ethnicity results were mainly consistent with another company's results. I would say these are best for Europeans but may be lacking in detail for some African and Asian populations (it did not include my African ethnicity). Overall, I like how the results tie in with my Ancestry family tree and show me genetic relations and our common ancestor from our trees. I particularly like how Ancestry has developed an algorithm to figure out the parental split for ethnicity and dna relatives without requiring either of your parents to test. That really sets it apart from other services.

This is part one of my review as I am still awaiting my results, it’s only been a couple of weeks and it could take between 6-8 weeks or even longer according to the website. I will update this review in due course.It arrives in a nicely presented box and the contents are very simple. It consists of a saliva tube, a collection bag, and an information sheet. The box is pre-labelled so all you need to do is put it in the post box.You need to activate your kit online before you send it off, which involves going to the Ancestry website or using the app and entering in the unique code on the saliva tube or info sheet you get. There isn’t much information to be entered apart from your name, date of birth, and your gender when you were born. It asks for consent for various research projects and storage of your DNA for future access, but you don’t have to agree to everything if you don’t want to, only the basic permissions.To use the kit, you have make sure you don’t eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum for at least 30 minutes before providing your saliva sample. When you’re ready you spit in the tube till it reaches the line (not much), take the funnel off the tube and replace it with the cap, screw the cap tightly to release the stabilizing fluid, and shake for at least 5 seconds. Pop the sample in the bag, which then goes back into the box, seal it up and post it off.Once notified of my results I will update my review but for now the experience has been worth the full five stars and I’m really looking forward to hearing back from Ancestry!
