4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This arrived well packaged with instructions and a small amount of assembly required. The instructions are poor for the assembly and how to use all the bits and pieces if you are not familiar with soldering in general. The quality of the extras are ok, nothing setting the world on fire. The main unit is almost all plastic, but well laid out with clear locations for the sponge, wire cleaner and the solder which is great. It's a touch light, so a little more weight would be handy to stop it moving around or more rubberised feet. The rear cable is well placed, but the front cable comes directly out of the front and for me seems a little in the way. Also the front cable isn't that flexible, so if your using this a lot, being in the way and not that flexible could be annoying. The digital display is great, easy to use with a dial and on/off button. You have to set the temperature, wait for it to blink a little then it will creep up to the temperature showing you as it moves. The unit does feel sturdy and like it will last, and it's easy to dock the iron when hot and I don't feel it would damage anything.I see this firmly aimed at the home user, not a professional in my opinion. I have given this 4 stars, if it had been cheaper I would have given 5 but at this price point (over £50), I would expect a little more. I am personally a home user and I really like it.All in all, a great pice of kit for the home user with all the bits and pieces you need. For future versions, consider a few more slots or areas to store more of the bits and pieces supplied - just a suggestion.
5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for the hobbyist
The media could not be loaded. This is a nice little unit for hobbyist. The base station has a sturdy plastic construction and has an ergonomic layout incorporating the soldering iron, its holder, tip cleaner, and storage rack (for the other soldering tips that are supplied). The base station is fitted with a UK spec plug and has an on/off switch. The temperature at the tip is controlled by a potentiometer and can be set between 180°C and 480°C. There is an LED display that shows the selected temperature and indicates when the iron is up to the selected temperature. It quickly it warms up to the set temperature. The base station shuts down after around 12 minutes, meaning you don't have to worry if you forget to turn it off. Also included is a spindle for holding a reel of solder (supplied). The spindle can either stand alone or conveniently attach to the main base unit. Also, in the box, there is a selection of five soldering tips, a desoldering tool, a pair of pointed tweezers, and a double-ended screwdriver.Changing the tips is just a case of unscrewing the soldering iron head and placing the desired tip in. Iver time the tips do wear out. However, they are a standard size, and replacements are available from many suppliers.
1.0 out of 5 stars Failed on 2nd use
The media could not be loaded. Seemed good value at first use of it etc, I used it for about an hour whilst reworking a smart instrument cluster.Went to use it for it's 2nd time a week later and it popped sizzled and died when I turned it on.
3.0 out of 5 stars A bit flimsy - not great to be honest
The item was delayed in dispatch for a few days, although this did not cause any problems, as I only ordered it as a backup to my main soldering iron. The soldering station itself is rather flimsy, made of extremely light plastic that doesn't want to stay still on the bench. The mains cable and iron cable are folded multiple times in the packaging and the wire type used is very stiff so they do not tend to straighten out at all - this makes the lightness more of a problem. In use, my particular one has one segment of the display that never lights up - rather poor quality control - see the photo. The temperature setting knob rotates about 3/4 of a turn from minimum to maximum temperature. When increasing the temperature, there is a short pause, then the display flashes indicating that the value has been set. The actual iron temperature is then displayed, and it takes only a few seconds to reach the set value. Unfortunately I could not get it to do the same when REDUCING the set temperature - after dialling in a lower value, it did not seem to want to display the actual irom temperature so that I could watch it slowly decreasing to the new set point. I didn't bother checking the displayed temperature for accuracy. The kit was supplied with various accessories including a reel of solder of no marked composition, just "solder wire". I have no idea if it's lead-free or otherwise. Also a selection of bits from very fine to very chunky. For some bizarre reason, a spare "sleeve" (the part of the barrel that fits onto the body of the handle) is also supplied. Maybe they expect this to break as it is made of rather flimsy metal. The accessories also include the cheapest-looking solder sucker I have ever seen - I wasn't sure if the metal barrel was even made of metal, and it operated with a nasty scratching sound.Overall pretty disappointed. Perhaps if they didn't bother with the accessories, they could have spent slightly more on the iron itself. Could be used in an emergency if a main iron was out of action, but I would not like to use this frequently.I have purchased other low cost "soldering stations" that are far better than this one.
