5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE it! A crafter's paradise.
I've built a book-nook before so I had some idea what I was getting into. These kits have small and fiddly parts and take a long time to build, so they're really for craft-lovers with time, patience and steady hands.Although they say it's for 'teens and up' I think they're ideal for adult crafters - why should children have all the fun!? I love that there's a trend for us grown-ups to have our own toys!I received the upgraded kit which has a few more plants. The book nook I built before took about 6 hours and I did it in one sitting - I tend to pick up these things when I know I'm not working/otherwise needed for the day and can fully take on the challenge! This one needs much longer though, so I've learned to let myself work on smaller parts, and then come back to do more another day.The instructions are clear and visual - if you follow them you can't go wrong. You'll need your own glue and a few other basic tools which most people will have around the house, but if not you'll need to add glue and a craft knife into your order to complete this. When building these kits you'll occasionally come across an issue - something doesn't seem to fit right, or you'll need to adapt something a bit - working out these little problems is sort of part of the challenge!Seeing it come together in the end is really satisfying and it's a nice model to end up with. Once you've added your batteries and can turn the lights on it's an effective little bit of decor.
4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely kit to build and so intricate and detailed, just a shame some of the papers came bent
This is a lovely little kit to construct that comes in a sturdy box that's also shrink wrapped. This kit is lovely and what you get to construct is so beautiful and detailed although when you first open this box (it's square and opens like a pizza box) you'll notice that although all of the wooden and other pieces are kept well in the box, the paper which forms some of the projects (like creating some plants from folding and glueing these papers together) are folded. The box just isn't big enough for these papers unfortunately which leave some of them getting a little bent or creased. :(The instructions are easy to understand and have diagrams throughout. I can't believe just how intricate the details are to this kit, you make literally everything including the little folds of plant fronds, shaping the petals and adding leaves, even the mop has to be made of individual bits of string and stick all joined together. It's so beautiful but so detailed that you really feel satisfied when you've created even a tiny little part of this entire project.Of course details like glue and scissors you have to provide yourself, but I am working my way through this kit, albeit a bit slowly, and enjoying every moment. Although the papers are a little bent, they luckily aren't folded over too much and so it doesn't really show up when I use them, however it just feels a little annoying that they are folded at all which could have been remedied with maybe a slightly bigger box. But for a fun kit to build something beautiful, this really is a lovely one to get, it's so satisfying to make even a small plant, and I can't wait to finish and attach the light which makes it complete. This being a special edition of this means there's apparently additional rose flowers to attach to the outside of this which I haven't concentrated on yet. Overall a lovely kit for anyone who loves making something intricate and beautiful! :)
5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing build that requires patience
I've previously built a miniature medieval/fantasy pharmacy which I thoroughly enjoyed, I thought I'd give this a try and I am very impressed with this.Firstly, you'll need patience (a lot of it), glue, a crafting knife, and two cr2032 / coin cell batteries (for the lights).Build time for me was roughly 12 or so hours spread over two weeks and what an experience that was! There were some frustrations and confusion, but that's part of the fun in building these sets. The sense of accomplishment and pride in work once you've finished is what truly makes these kits such a pleasure to work with.I wouldn't really recommend these for teens, unless they are extremely patient and have a lot of time to dedicate towards doing this, but great for adults that just want to switch off at the end of the day and concentrate their everything towards something that may open the doors to a new hobby!
5.0 out of 5 stars Cute & Thoughtful Design
I'm on a binge, and this is the third DIY dollhouse set I've gotten! I'm finding the very concept adorable so far. This particular set is super cute and apparently comes in a 'basic' and 'upgrade' style. I was given the 'upgrade', which on closer inspection seems to be the same greenhouse but with some extra flowers and foliage to decorate the outside of it.This seems to be from the same company that offers the Magic Shack, which I also own and am very pleased with, and a lot of the materials are similar and of the same quality to that one, and there is the same great attention to detail in the design and instructions. For some reason, this kit comes with fewer tools; still no glue or dust covers, and no scissors or Stanley knife provided. I find the inconsistency rather odd and I imagine it might be better if the brand had a standard set of tools to provide for each kit. Luckily, I have my own higher quality tools to work with anyway (and would really encourage other enthusiasts to think about investing in tools of their own, as the quality of what is generally provided varies wildly). Still a fantastic set, though; really looking forward to putting it together!
