Essen Pop and Blues Festival 1969 / 1970

Description:

Two great live concerts of The Keef Hartley Band at the Essen Blues and Pop Festival from 1969/1970 finally available on a double CD. In 1963, Keef Hartley joined the band Rory Storm & The Hurricanes, with whom Ringo Starr had previously drummed. After intermittent stints with John Lord in The Artwoods and engagements in Hamburg's Starclub, Hartley took part in John Mayall's album "The Blues Alone" in May 1967, on which Mayall played all the instruments except the drums himself. After that, Hartley was a permanent member of the Bluesbreakers until 1968, when the busy drummer formed his own band, The Keef Hartley Band.

With Miller Anderson (guitar, vocals), Gary Thain (bass) and Mick Weaver (keyboards) as well as saxophonist Chris Mercer, the line-up was top-class. In spring 1969, the first album "Halfbreed" was released, which served the popular genre of progressive jazz rock, in the style of bands such as Colosseum, If, Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears. In the same year, the Keef Hartley Band performed at the Woodstock Festival (on the 2nd day - Saturday - before The Incredible String Band). There are no audio or film recordings of their performance. Only a tape recording of a fan with fragments of some songs is said to have survived. The manager of the KHB had forbidden the recording of the concert for both audio and film. 3 months after Woodstock, The Keef Hartley Band performed at the Essen Pop & Blues Festival in the Grugahalle in October 1969, as well as at the second edition of this festival a few months later on 25 April 1970. In contrast to the Woodstock Festival, there are sound recordings of these, which have now been lovingly edited and are being made available to a wide audience for the first time in almost 55 (!) years. This is a historical document of the times, says guitarist and singer Miller Anderson, "The best thing you can hear from us live!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Keef Hartley Band

Two excellent performances from a vastly underatted band.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essen Pop

Always a fan of Keef Hartley and these 2 shows are good examples of what a tight outfit he ran. Sound quality is better than I expected, though 4 stars reflects it's not of today's standards, but that's not to be expected.

3.0 out of 5 stars Keef live in Germany getting a bit blowy

I was lucky to see the KHB in 69, 3 times, first time with nucleus 5 piece, superb!! with 2 guitarists Spit and Miller, however Keef wanted to add brass to his sound, and it really worked on the LPs, but live the long brass improvsations shook me cold, sadly these 2 concerts go that way and more, not really being a jazzer I find lots of the long songs very tedious. The recording are very good, but the more blues tracks (great) are over powered by the rest, but hey thats what playlists are for

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent ARCHIVE performance albeit with some sound issues

A brilliant archive recording of the KHB - and well worth the cost and to add to any collection. The performances cannot be faulted. There is [obviously] some sound limitations and distortions but I did not find them too distracting from the experience.Would I recommend? - ABSOLUTELY.CORRECTION is needed regarding the description. The KHB did play at Woodstock and their manager refused to allow them to be filmed and recorded unless they were paid $2000 up front. That didn't happen and therefore they never featured on the Woodstock film - much to their detriment to their career. However, they were recorded and their entire set was saved for posterity and can be heard in all its glory on the amazing collection of Woodstock performances - WOODSTOCK - BACK TO THE GARDEN 50th ANNIVERSARY.A total of 162 tracks on 10 CD's the collection features just about everything that happened. Currently unavailable on Bolo but worth looking around for - especially if you want the Keef Hartley performance.l
