3.0 out of 5 stars Slippery clamp and not that bright
I liked the flexibility that this light offered but in practice it proved to be disappointing.ProsVery lightweightCompact and slimSturdy plastic constructionHot-shoe adaptor2 threaded edges (portrait or landscape)Good battery life3 Colour temperaturesDiffusedConsClamp is ineffectiveNot all that brightThis Selfie Light all looked promising as I unpacked it, everything looked good quality and the bundle was generous with the Selfie Light unit, the camera hot-shoe adaptor, phone clamp, charging cable and the user manual.I fully charged the unit before I turned it on, initially the brightness was on a middle setting, as I increased the brightness to full I was underwhelmed, my iPhone's COB light is brighter than this Selfie Light offered, but it is well diffused and the light spread is wider, I reserved judgement until I used it properly. The controls are easy and intuitive, you don't need to read through the instructions to suss it all out, you can adjust the brightness level, choose from 3 colour temperatures and the obvious power On/Off.The Selfie Light has 2 different attachment options; either direct on a DSLR via a hot-shoe mount or use the phone/screen clamp, but you can attach it away from the camera for lighting effects such as side lighting, the 1/4" threads on the sides of the Selfie Light mean you can attach it directly onto suitable tripods which is a handy feature.BrightnessThis was ultimately the downfall of this Selfie Light's overall usefulness, I was expecting more and I had to reduce my expectations to its intended use as a 'Selfie Light', and for this I guess it is fine as it lights up near objects nicely and the diffused panel makes it soft which is flattering for skin, it is also useful for closeups of objects or smaller items. But for larger items or people further away then the light is pretty weak, I would say a meter max is its effective range.ClampThe Selfie Light's clamp was my next disappointment, it just slips on my phones (iPhone 12 Max) screen and rear, it was very annoying to use as it just wouldn't stay in place, to the point I just knew I wouldn't use it and it went back into its box, I have better options than this, including the phones inbuilt flash/light.Overall I was disappointed in this Selfie Light, the brightness and annoying clamp were the deal-breakers. I almost feel guilty in giving this away to a charity shop as I am passing on the disappointment.
4.0 out of 5 stars Phone selfie light
This is a fairly lightweight selfie light designed for mobile phones (not monitors). It has both warm and cold white light LEDs and you can either have one or the other or a mixture of both, at 10 different light intensities. I find the lowest level the best for me as at higher intensities my eyes don’t cope well. This fits my phone with its silicone case fine, but I would say it would accept a maximum of 12mm thickness before the ability to clamp is impaired and you probably would want something at least 10mm thick to not create a pressure point on the screen with the tip of the clamp. Rechargeable by usb which is handy.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great for camera, camcorder, phone or laptop
What a fabulous little selfie light. The light has three colour modes; warm - using an array of 40 warm white LEDs, daylight - using an array of 40 daylight white LEDs, and cool - using both LED arrays simultaneously. It also has ten brightness settings, and these are memorised for each colour mode, so whilst warm white might be preset to level 3, cool could be level 4 and daylight level 10, with a single button press to switch between them. It remembers these settings when turned off and also remembers the last colour mode selected when turned on, no need to faff about cycling through the modes every time.In the box, besides the light, are two mounting adapters. One of these is for a hot or cold shoe on top of a camera, with one locknut to fasten down to the camera and one to fasten up to the light. The other is a spring clip to go on a phone or laptop screen, with a locknut to fix the direction of the light, an adjustable angle and a large hole in the clip so as not to obscure the camera lens. There are two quarter-inch tripod mounting holes on the light (yes, it'll fit an ordinary camera tripod as well) so the light can be mounted in either landscape or portrait orientation. It also comes with a 1 metre long, charge-only USB-A to USB-C cable.Current draw is 650mA when charging, with the light adding between 40 and 380mA to this if illuminated at the same time, depending on brightness and colour mode (cool white draws slightly more than warm or daylight). Although a reputable 1 amp charger will charge it happily, if you want to charge-and-light you may wish to use a 2 amp charger instead. It takes approx. 11.5Wh to charge from empty, suggesting the battery is indeed around the 3Ah capacity it's claimed to be.I'll definitely be putting this to use on my next video call as the light from the window behind tends to overwhelm the camera even with the curtains closed and the room light is almost directly overhead.
5.0 out of 5 stars Handy little light
I picked this up as an extra little fill in light for some on the fly macro photography as well as some product shots. It's quick and simple to use and does the job admirably well for the price. It's not the brightest of this style of light but for what I'm using it as, that's not an issue. The colour temp and CRI index are not bad (Not brilliant, but it is only cheap and there's nothing so bad I can't deal with it in an editing package) and as it has no cable because of the built in in rechargeable battery, it's light and easy to move around with.It has a couple of standard screw thread for a tripod type mount and comes with a useful little clip that holds it securely, either in portrait or landscape orientation.Over all, a handy little light if you're on a budget and we even used it as a lamp when we had a recent power cut.
