4.0 out of 5 stars Fun but messy
This was a very fun activity to do on a rainy day or just a chilled day at home I did this with my 5 year old boy who really enjoyed trying to chisel away at each thing to find what was inside. They are super messy especially with younger ones but I didn't find it hard to clean up.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and educational activity
This kit comes with three different "rocks" to excavate, a gold bar, a "meteorite" and a "volcano", each containing a variety of gemstones and plastic dinosaur skeletons to be gradually unearthed. It also includes a hammer, chisel and brush for excavating and a small plastic box divided into sections to store the discovered gemstones. The rocks are made from plaster so are reasonably easy to break and dig into, but can be further softened with water if required. The process is incredibly messy and ends up with chunks of plaster and dust everwhere, so is best done outdoors or on a tray to contain the mess.I tried this out with my 7 year old daughter who happily spent an entire afternoon pretending to be a geologist or paleontologist, chisellelling away and then gently using the brush to gradually expose the uncovered skeleton or gemstone. We had fun guessing what kind of dino or stone it might be as it was slowly revealed. The kit comes with a leaflet which has some very basic info about the gemstones and the names of the different dinosaur skeletons, I feel this could have been expanded on to increase the educational value of the kit. Overall though we had a lot of fun with it and I feel it's good value.
5.0 out of 5 stars Kids love it
At 11 and 9 my kids still love doing these dig out things but this is the first time they have had a giant one with gems in and this has combined their love of making the dig out mess and their love of shiny gems! These make a mess and be prepared to feel like you are going to be cleaning up that dust forever but it will keep kids quiet and mine just love doing this activity before they then go and sort their gem collection. For younger kids this often then turns into role play and extends the game further which I love.
4.0 out of 5 stars Messy, but fun!
We Home Educate here, so I always love to see more fun educational toys, kits, and whatnot. This is a fun set, and as we have been discussing geology lately, this was perfect! It's messy, so take it outside or have something in place. This produces a lot of dust and bits from chiselling away at the 'rock'. It's great that if you have more than one child, they can all take a piece and look for their own finds. Other kits we have found have been singular items in each.My biggest negative about this (other than the mess!) is the lack of information. The leaflet enclosed has really basic information on it. That could have been so much more and made the whole thing so much more educational. But it did give us the opening to go and research, so that is also a great point. But those not wanting this as part of their education might want a little more info.Over all, the kit was enjoyed. I got the storage box, daughter took the crystals, and my son took the dinosaurs. Everyone was happy! xXx

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun!
Great fun! Makes a bit of a mess as you do it, but we made sure to cover the table beforehand with a waterproof cover. The gems are a decent size for a kit like this and the dino bones were a fun addition. Our kids loved playing with this and bashing their way through the "rocks". Lots of fun!
4.0 out of 5 stars Get those KIds Excavating !
What you get in this Gemstone Excavation Kit is three lumps of plaster which is meant to represent rocks, several Excavation Tools (made of plastic for safety) a small box to keep your finds in and a booklet. Note I managed to mislay the storage box but you do indeed get one.Hidden deep within the 'Rocks' are Gemstones plus a few mini Dinosaurs all waiting to be found by the budding Archeologist.Hopefully it inspires the Child to study and research the Natural World further. But if they turn out to be not that way inclined prefering the modern Scientific World instead, well at least you get something out of it....some nice semi-precious Stones to keep.A Tip> I can't remember if it suggests it in the booklet, but it's a good idea to soak the Plaster Rock pieces in water for a while before hacking away at them. It softens the Plaster itself and helps keep the dust down.A nice little gift for the Child with an inquisitive mind.
