VERY PLEASED WITH THIS BLANKET
5.0 out of 5 stars Good quality blanket to have in case of emergencies
I am always nervous of house fires and am very careful around appliances, especially ovens. I don't have any emergency equipment and always considered a fire extinguisher but worried that I would be too panicky to use it if an emergency happened (and they go out of date). When I saw these blankets I decided this could be a good solution. There are two blankets, each individually wrapped in a red storage bag and two black straps hang down so you just need to pull on them to get the blanket out of its bag (and the closure of the bag is velcro so you can easily just open it up that way too). Each blanket measures 1m square and they can be used to throw over a kitchen fire, or use as a shield to give you time to get out of the house. It is not large enough to cover your whole body, but this certainly would help. The description on Bolo states it is reusable, but the text on the blanket says it has to be thrown away after use. In any case, I am not so bothered about the discrepancy as in the event of a fire, nobody would be too concerned if they have to buy new blankets. This is something that is a deterrent and which you hope you will never have to use. Unlike a fire extinguisher this never goes out of date so can be kept to hand indefinitely.I am keeping one in the kitchen near my oven, and one in the bedroom for any night emergency. There are also 2 whistles included. I am not sure whether I would be able to use these in an emergency as I would be too busy trying to get out of the house, but I guess they are handy to have (perhaps even to keep handy when walking in parks etc to ward off potential attackers). All in all, a good buy for reassurance, and at the current price of £11.99 for 2, I think it is a good investment.
4.0 out of 5 stars Appear well made, comply to an older standard
Pair of fire blankets with emergency whistles included, supplied in soft packaging (our existing kitchen fire blanket is in a hard case) but appear well made, containing a 1m x 1m fire blanket.Useful to have in more than one location, we have one in the garage and one in the kitchen, these can be used to either smother a fire or wrap a person whose clothes are on fire, to extinguish them. Alternatively they could be used to give some protection in an escape situation. They comply to EN 1869 1997, which is the relevant, but outdated standard, revised in 2019 to include more testing to prove their effectiveness in fires including electrical appliances. These blankets therefore offer a reduced level of testing and potential effectiveness when compared to those tested to the more recent standards. The standard relates to disposable fire blankets, despite what the advert states about them being reusable.Useful to have available in more than one location
5.0 out of 5 stars Fire blankets can give us extra seconds to get to safety if the fire isn't extinguished.
Oil (cooking fat included) and fuel fires have to be smothered, starved of oxygen, rather than extinguished with liquid. Water will cause hot oil to splatter furiously, spreading fire a lot more rapidly, and in all likelihood, badly burn the person trying to put the fire out. Even the pressure from a CO2 extinguisher can exacerbate an oil fire, unless the person wielding the extinguisher has been trained to use it at the right angle, from the correct distance, and in the right manner to give others, and themselves, time to escape. These fire blankets can most times fully extinguish a domestic kitchen fire, but more importantly, they can give us all extra vital seconds to escape in more serious situations.Different causes of fire require different, sometimes very specific approaches to put them out safely. But a fire blanket can be effective, at least to some extent, for nearly all cases - and this next bit is important to remember - it can give us extra time to get to safety. The whistle that is included can also be a life-saver, alerting others, and for getting help in poor visibility situations.I strongly recommend keeping at least one in the kitchen, and one in the car.
5.0 out of 5 stars Good to have in Kitchen and Caravan just in case
This is one of those things you hope you'll never have to use but its useful to have just in case.In the package there are two 1m square fire blankets, each neatly packaged into a red case. Obviously I'm not in a position to actually try them out but the description of the material of the blankets seems to be suitable for the task. The red case has a hole at the top so that it can be hung up somewhere conventient and close by any potential source of fire. Two straps at the bottom can then be pulled down to release the blanket. We have placed one in the kitchen in which we have a gas hob as a potential hazard and one in the caravan which also has a gas hob but other gas appliances as well.Supposedly the blanket could be reused after an incident. I guess that would depend on what condition it would be in.There are two whistles included but I'm not sure if they'd ever prove useful - but who knows. At the time of this review they're priced at £11.99 for two and I think this is very good value.
5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to review a fire blanket
Its very hard to review a fire blanket without there having been a fire. I mean you can hardly say 'One star, I am fried to a crispy now!', can you? But it looks like one from the outside <shrugs>
