4.0 out of 5 stars Some flaws, but it works & it's cheap
Given the price of good grinders (even manual ones), there is a limit to what you can expect from a £20 battery-operated one, and my rating takes this into account.Adjusting the grind is fiddly and inexact - it seems to tighten, and then loosen back to coarse as you turn it.Grinding takes a while, especially on the finer settings.Grind isn't terribly uniform.Battery life is limited to just a few grinds. However, it does work and is easier to grind than a portable hand-grinder.I wouldn't really bother with this at home, but it has its place for travel/camping, especially if you have the means to top up the battery.I'd also tend to stick to coarser grinds and brewing methods that prefer them - the grind time and inconsistency of particle size makes it a bit less suitable for espresso machines or moka pots, and I'd probably stick to a cafetiere or pour over.Handy to have in your camping kit, but for home use, I'd stick to a mains powered grinder (even a bladed one).
3.0 out of 5 stars Grinds coffee but not well made and slow
The media could not be loaded. It does the job but slow. The unit is slightly bigger than I was expecting (10cm diameter and about 15cm tall). But still quite small footprint on counter top.I wanted a quick way to grind coffee and control grind setting.Only used it a few times so far with this findings:Grind control setting:Terrible! Has a plastic nut that does not release the ceramic core. Once you tighten it, it's jammed in the position. The grinder works and you get super fine coffee. But to make it course again it will not open back up. Instead you have to release plastic nut, open machine apart and use back of wooden spoon release the core. Tighten back up again (the spring does nothing). So each time you want different grinds it's the same process. Also the image makes it look like there is specific grind setting, there isn't. Just a "wing nut" that manually closes and barely opens.Speed:Next is speed, it's slow 16-18g of coffee takes approx 3-4 minutes. Not too bad while coffee machine heats up. But is annoying if you have many coffees to make.Battery:3-4 uses before battery needs charging.Battery takes a while to charge. Several hours (but haven't timed it).Either way, it's not practical for more than 2 people using the machine.Parts:The plastic receptical bin (where ground coffee goes) is held in place by push fit- - with large o-ring seal made from a very thin fragile rubber which keeps popping out each time you open it to get the ground coffee. This is the first thing that will either break or get lost.Overview:I already own proper manual grinder so can swap out if this stops. Will I return this, no. Only I use it. Needed a small footprint coffee grinder which can grind fine for espresso machine and stove top bialetti. Was cheap and it does the job although annoying to change the grind settings. Will need to hot glue rubber seal in place and get better replacements seals (I already have them). I do not like leaving on charge so I have a timer adapter to stop charging after a few hours (esp when not at home)I would not recommend this, if you have more than 2 people using this or if you have multiple cups a day.
4.0 out of 5 stars It works and it's inexpensive
It's been years since I've had a grinder. I always found them a bit messy and time consuming. Although I like the product of the Nespresso type machines, I don't like the amount of packaging nor do I like the fact that I can't decide how much or how strong the coffee should be.These days I make one good cup of coffee a day to my own spec so this bean grinder seems a good addition to my daily routine. Before I got this I weighed how much ground coffee I normally used to see just how much beans I should use (18 gm - I found). When I weighed out that amount of beans, it looked a lot, an awful lot more than I expected. I adjusted the grinder mechanism for a fine grind and then started the whole thing rolling. It's slow, only to be expected of a burr grinder and it's not quiet, neither is it deafening, it makes a noise. After a couple of minutes that noise changed and the grinds were ready. The grind was not even, but it was okay for my use, which is in a french press. For the price it's good, for single use, it's good. If you want better, you'll pay for it.
2.0 out of 5 stars Extremely slow, not a strong motor, very rudimentary adjustment for fine/coarse
The media could not be loaded. This looks very nice when you get it.First thing to note, the clear plastic lid/container the ground coffee goes in falls off. It does not stay attached to the body if turned upside down.Secondly, the adjustment for coarseness is just a little plastic nut. To make the grind more fine, you must push hard and screw this in tight with force to manually reduce the gap that the ground coffee goes through.Third, it is so slow. I can only post one video per review so have included a clip of the grinding speed, rather than the lid falling off or how to adjust coarseness. It takes several minutes to grind enough coffee for one double expresso. Several minutes.... so if don't want to wait 10 minutes to get enough for 2 cups, you will have to grind a batch in advance, rather than fresh each morning. In addition, you definitely want to make this setting fine. The video of it in operation to show speed is before I figured out how to make it more fine (a lot of pressure on the nut) and you can see how extremlely coarse and irregular the dround coffee came out. See second photo.I'm giving this 2 stars because it does work, but cannot recommend. If it were a decent buy, like average, I would give 3 stars on my rating system.Hope that helps!
