My old 50" plasma tv uses around 500w so is expensive to run. Due to the energy crisis I used my laptop for tv stuff and the projector in a dedicated room for occasional movies which deserve to be bigger, better and more epic, but really wanted something that was energy efficient for some tv shows that I wanted to see in the lounge larger than the laptop and with surround sound etc. Energy prices had kinda made me reticent to use the plasma, plus HDR would be nice which the plasma couldn't do. I wanted something fairly basic at around £400+, but reviews ended up with me looking at a more expensive U7 Hisense or even an LG OLED if I wanted something more like the plasma in image quality, so when Argos had this 65" tv on offer for £307 with 10% of, I figured £276 including delivery would be a good stop gap and better than the laptop for general tv etc which would be it's main use. The plasma had a large border so this 65" tv with it's thin border isn't much larger.Out of the box it's very bright and uses a lot more energy than the 85w its spec suggests for SDR. It's too bright, overly sharpened and colours are over saturated and unnatural. It gives people a kind of plastic look. As I will use the tv mostly in the evening, I found reducing the back light to around 25% uses approx 60w, and in natural colour mode and with the sharpness turned down to 5 it looks a lot more analogue and natural. Black levels are better than expected too, despite the low native contrast (helped by the reduce back light level), and I can't say that image noise due to poor compression/processing etc with streaming content has yet to be noticeable (the brighter the image, the more likely it will be visible). Putting it into local dimming mode increases energy and contrast but works quite well (blooming might be an issue but haven't used it enough to notice any yet). Will probably use that for sci fi stuff and HDR rather than normal tv content. I have to manually change between those modes so some presets on the remote would have been useful. At 500w the plasma uses a kW every two hours. With my current settings this 65" Toshiba tv uses a kW every 16 hours, which is way more than I would ever use in a day (maybe 3 or 4 hours a day at most), so although energy consumption is 5 or 6 times more than the laptop (around 11w when the battery isn't charging, and 30w when it is), it uses just a few pence for a few hours use and barely adds anything to the bill (approx 5p or 6p a day if I use it), especially compared to the plasma. Two hours on the plasma is like almost a weeks use on this 65" tv for me.Only negatives would be the FireTV interface. It seems a little slow and clunky, but I could use my Roku 4K instead if I found it too cumbersome. It took some time to set up. It did a firmware update immediately, and later one for the remote. Despite looking everywhere and even Googling, I couldn't see how to add this device to my Bolo account, so ended up using the remote to manually type in my details. One issue some people may find is the on/off and control button is on the bottom underneath the tv screen. If that's where you have a centre speaker or sound bar you won't be able to use the button (most will use the remote anyway), and you'll have to make sure there is enough gap between the two or it can accidentally operate the button after it warms up. Mine did that - it scrolled down through the menu and then switched off the tv before I worked out what was going on. Other than those minor quibbles there's not much wrong with it. I didn't have the HDMI issue some people had with the set not seeing connected devices. Maybe I connected thigs up in the right order to avoid that issue without realising. More luck than judgement. As an alternative to the laptop and as a replacement to the Plasma (which still throws a very nice picture) I couldn't be more pleased. Very energy efficient, good natural colours and contrast and an overall image that is far better than expected when set up. Unbelievable value for money. I really can't see me buying an OLED any time soon just for tv stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value mid-range large TV

For context in 2012 I was looking for a high quality large TV for our lounge. I bought a top-of-the-range 60 inch Samsung LED backlit LCD TV and was horrified by the backlight bleed - irregular clouds of white. I tried another and it was the same. I can't remember what the state of OLED was at the time, but I went for a 60 inch plasma instead and was happy. Over the years I realised that when it came to replace it I would have to get an OLED because I hated the not-black black in the LCD TVs. Fast forward to 2023 and the plasma died. We're planning to move house sometime soon so buying a new OLED TV which may not be suitable for the new house seems like a bad idea. The plasma died too soon. After seeing used TVs sell for far too much I decided to buy a new TV for the lounge that was cheap enough that it could be demoted to another room in a new house. Being close to Thanksgiving I waited for black Friday deals and saw this TV for a 5% discount. There were cheaper ones but without QLED and from what I understand about the technology I thought it was worth the extra. I considered both Hisense and TCL TVs but the equivalents were actually more that this one. I knew that although it has the Toshiba brand it is actually made by Vestel, but I have some experience of products from that Turkish company so I wasn't deterred. So I've had it a week now and I am quite pleased with the TV. There are no misbehaving pixels which rather surprised me (the plasma had one and my Samsung ultrawide monitor has one). For the price the picture seems very good and the QLED makes it much more vibrant that regular LCD. As expected the screen displays grey from the LED backlight instead of black, however it is mostly uniform and therefore not irritating like the bleed from those Samsung TVs had been. I am using the TV with a separate 5.1 sound system but when I first set it up the internal speakers did not sound terrible to me.Mechanically the TV shows its price - it is just good enough. The manufacturing finish is only medium quality and on the stand the TV will easily wobble. I have it wall-mounted and this makes it obvious that the chassis can flex a little. Of course this is no problem once it is on the wall. The VESA mounts are 400x200 which is minimal for a 65 inch TV and they are low on the TV - I had to use adaptor plates to extend my wall mount so that it does not sit too high. The Fire TV UI seems fine to me - just another build of Android TV. There seems to be plenty of configuration options - too many for me to care about much. 4K streaming from the included apps is fine although I may still use my NVIDIA Shield TV via HDMI because I am used to it. What I am a little disappointed in is the time the TV takes to turn on, especially if it was last configured to the tuner. Compared to the older TVs I have been used to it is too long. I would prefer a TV whose tuner is separate from the Android TV. However this is not a deal-breaker and I'll just get used to it - I stream far more than I watch live TV anyway.Overall I think I made the right decision buying this TV. The big brands have non-QLED TVs for more than this and I am not convinced that there would be anything about them that would make that extra money seem worth it. Whilst I accept that some of the competitor QLED TVs might be better, they do cost more, and in many cases a lot more. I definitely recommend this TV as a good value mid-range large TV.UPDATE: I have got used to the slightly slower start-up time. Sometimes it seems quite quick and other times it takes longer. It is tolerable. Streaming on Fire TV is also mostly fine, but I found that ITVX could sometimes seem a bit stuttery, as if the picture was overcompressed and this was causing a decompression lag. The difference was obvious when watching ITVX from my Shield TV so I am mostly using the latter (except for C4 which is still not supported). I found that my old HDMI cables needed to be replaced to higher spec so that 4K and CEC ARC worked properly, and the Bolo basics cables are great. I still have no regrets about buying this TV, however I shall be buying an OLED TV in the future because LCD blacks in a darkened room are simply not black enough.

55 inch TV has pretty good picture and sound quality for the budget price but its tricky to get the picture set up exactly right, lots of adjustment in the menus but never seems quite right, football quite blurry with high speed camera shots, lots of things like motion smoothing and sharpness wtc to fiddle with. Some HD programmes are really very good but some older broadcasts not so much. For the money (£330) it’s a good deal but better TVs exist.
