4.0 out of 5 stars A generic calculator good enough to challenge the big names - and it adds an erasable writing pad
This calculator, though unbranded, bears an uncanny resemblance to my Casio fx-991 EX, even down to the carbon fibre effect case. See my photo for a comparison. This model adds a feature the Casio doesn't have though – the electric writing pad built into the case. And the case has a nice folding action with a magnetic catch that's really a bit nicer to use than the Casio's slide-off case. Unlike earlier versions with a writing pad, this shares its power with the calculator so doesn't need a separate battery. You can clear what you've scribbled (a stylus is included that slides inside the calculator body) with a button press or lock the pad with a tine switch so you don't clear it by mistake. The pad is better than some I've seen but still a bit faint and your writing is blue in colour. The calculator itself is both solar and battery powered. Answers stay in memory when powered off because of this. While this is like my old Casio, it's not like the newer model of the Casio, which has had a radical overhaul of the design and keyboard layout that not everyone likes. Some may prefer this older version. But really, it works just like the Casio even if the keyboard layout is very slightly shuffled around. It's very fast, very accurate, very full featured for A-Level and beyond. The keyboard is just as good as the Casio's, which is to say almost perfect. Hard plastic keys with a good feel and no errors. The display isn't perfect however. It goes a blue colour when you switch on and it could do with more contrast. It's quite hard to see in dim light or off angle. It's not as good in person as on the promo photos on this page. The Casio is a little better but neither are great. The newer model of the Casio may be better.I'm surprised that this is so close to equalling the Casio equivalent. It's the first time I've seen this happen. But this is not all that cheap compared to the Casio at the time of writing, obviously because of the writing pad feature. Do you need the pad?As always, compare prices and specs, but for me this is the first generic that is so close to being as good as the big name calculators that it doesn't matter.
5.0 out of 5 stars Very good quality
It’s very well made with quality of material. It’s stable and accurate. Very useful for my kid’s study. Most importantly, it comes with a pen and writing pad, which is very practical for some draft calculations. It’s dual powered as well. Very convenient. Highly recommend.
