4.0 out of 5 stars Retro gaming fun, even with 2 players, missing the slot for 20p coins...
I've been playing games since Pong appeared for the TV, so have way too many happy memories of early gaming, the Handheld Game Console Boy is like stepping back 30 years and re-living those days!Ignore the high-definition marketing photos, this is 8-bit gaming at its finest, simple graphics, 'plinky' music and great gameplay. All 500 games can be accessed using the "D" pad on the console, then selected with the play button. 2 player options, using the provided wired gamepad are available, probably best enjoyed using the AV cable plugged into a TV, I don't think the tiny screen shared between 2 would be particularly practical, but if the 2 players are very friendly, maybe...The volume control is located on the left-hand side of the unit, close to the bottom, a tiny thumbwheel that is easy to miss. All of the happy positives aside, only one gripe, when charging a red LED illuminates on the mid-left of the screen, it doesn't go out on my unit, or change to green, or whatever, to indicate charging is complete. there is also no battery state indicator on the display.Play time is advertised as around 4 hours, with charging around the same, or faster. which is very good for such a tiny battery. The manual is skimpy, with an error telling th euser to dispose of exhausted batteries, so perhaps the rechargeable option is a new addition?I guess I'll have to play some more to see if I can exhaust the battery before I'm exhausted... (My daughter remembers happily playing with a Game Boy on car trips, I guess my grand daughter will follow her mum in that!)4 stars because of the charge indicator, but 5 stars completely for the play value!
5.0 out of 5 stars Hundreds of Ready-To-Play Games With No Internet Required!
What I most love about this handheld gaming console is that it doesn't require an Internet connection and it's packed with games. It keeps my son entertained when we're out and about, especially when he's disappointed when there's no Wi-Fi.Unlike his iPad, which often needs an online connection or updates, this console has hundreds of self-contained games ready to enjoy. Plus, I haven't got to spend a penny buying games! The battery life is impressive - around five hours thanks to the 1,200 mAh rechargeable battery. The screen quality is surprisingly good too, and the device is compact and lightweight, making it easy to take along. The classic video game selection is delightful and brings back fond memories. I love that my son can play some of the games I cherished as a child, including 1942, Arkanoid, Defender 2, Donkey Kong, Double Dragon, Galaga, Galaxian, Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Street Fighter VI, Super Mario, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Tetris. There are also a few tabletop games offered, like Baccarat, Dominoes, Old Maid, and Poker.I do have some small complaints. The plastic quality is acceptable, but it could feel more durable. The charging indicator is tiny. Additionally, the claim of having 500 games seems inaccurate, as a number are repeated, such as Space Invaders. Though that's minor, because there are so many games anyway! The order of game titles isn't completely alphabetical either. The TV cable, which I wasn't able to use as my TV requires a HDMI connection, is rather short. While the D-pad works fine, I found it a bit challenging to navigate accurately with certain games, such as Pac-Man.Still, these are minor issues for me. Overall, I'm delighted with the device. It's filled with fun classic games for endless hours of enjoyment without needing to connect to the Internet. The price is truly incredible for what you get!
3.0 out of 5 stars About 100 different games.
While you could say there are 500 games on this device as there are 500 listed in the menu at around the 120 mark the games just repeat over and again later on. So you have about 120 individual games here. Pretty misleading. The game selection is focused on two player games and some of them you can play at the same time while many are turn based. The second controller can only be used by the second player, which is a shame as it is better to use than the controls on the device which are a bit squashed together. The screen is great quality but the games are more playable when plugged into a tv I find. However the trade off on this is plugging into a tv both messes with the colours and does highlight the graphs limitations of some of the games.Probably the thing I like least is the menu system, you have the 500, or 120, games and they only way to get to them is to scroll up and down, and the only way to get back to the menu is to reset the device completely. So its difficult to work your way through the games and find something good, or so I found. Also the menu music is quite irritating and you can't shut it off. This is a great value device even with only a hundred and so games, its cheap but you do get a lot. Having said that, I used it once and put it to one side. The menu system, not being able to navigate between the games well and so many of them are really rubbish - it would be better if you could delete games or make a favorites list or something. As it is its probably an okay stocking filler but it won't have any extended use.
