A gentle exfoliator, a deeply moisturizing serum, plus a faithful moisturizer.
This is an excellent, albeit incomplete skincare kit from Dermalogica. I just need to point this out upfront. The gentle exfoliator is like a cleanser but is not a replacement for the cleansing step. It’s actually meant to follow the use of a cleanser (not included), once per day. The serum is the next product, but it should be preceded by a toner (not included). After the serum comes the moisturizer, which is included. These are the recommended steps from Dermalogica, so it’s interesting that the cleanser and toner are absent here. Perhaps they think everyone already has their cleanser and toner, but if you have those two you surely have the moisturizer as well, as that’s the base of their skincare regime. Anyway, I find the logic here confusing. On to the products…The daily milkfoliant is a powdered exfoliator, with oats and coconut to help buff the dead skin cells from your face. This formulation also includes alpha- and beta-hydroxyacids to help loosen dead skin for a more youthful appearance. They say to use half a teaspoon, but I think 1/4 is enough. Use on already cleansed skin, once per day. Add the powder to your palm, drip some water on it and rub it into a creamy lather. Apply it to your face and rub for about 1 minute, then rinse. It leaves your face wonderfully refreshed. The circular hydration serum is a concentrated dose of hyaluronic acid, which has superior water binding properties. It will actually suck water from the air and hold it close to your skin. The chemistry term for that property is hygroscopic. I spray my face with their Multi Active Toner first, and while my face is still damp with toner, I rub the drops all over my face and neck. The serum is rather thick and absorbs quickly, so if your face is dry, you won’t be able to spread the serum very far and you’ll end up wasting product. You only need a few drops of this for your entire face and neck.Lastly is the active moist, which is Dermalogica’s original oil-free moisturizer and one of the oldest in their line. There’s not much to be said about this. It’s basically an all-purpose moisturizer, which is probably why they included it.Overall, I have to recommend this kit, even if you don’t have their special cleansing gel or multi-active toner. While I really love their multi-active toner, I think you can probably substitute in any cleanser you like since the special cleansing gel, like their active moist, is pretty generic. The milkfoliant, multi-active toner and circular hydrating serum really seems to brighten up and make my skin look fresh.
Super starter skincare set. Great formulas, works with oily skin.
I am new to this skincare brand and as such don't have much to compare it to. Until fairly recently I used the Clinique 3 step oily skin formula, later adding the rich eye cream and moisture surge; and Philosophy exfoliating facial wash 2-3X/week. I used these products exclusively to all others for many years (going back decades for the Clinique system).I'm not 100% certain what type of skin type the Smooth and Hydrate system is formulated for. If I were to wager a guess I'd have to say combination and perhaps sensitive skin. It arrives in a nicely packaged box, appropriate for gift giving. It's not a thoroughly comprehensive set since it doesn't have a toner or eye cream, but there's definitely enough included here to get started on a new system. The exfoliant cleanser is a powder - dispense a small amount into your hand, rub it for a second to get a little lather going and it transforms into a surprisingly effective cleanser. It's nowhere nearly as gritty as the Philosophy exfoliant I have used for so many years. There's not a lot of grit in this formula. It's an incredible cleanser but it's not going to completely replace the more aggressive exfoliant product I need for an ultra deep scrub down. I'm wondering if there's an enzyme present? The cleanser does a great job of breaking down surface oils, and I really appreciate that about it.The serum is super nice. It's in an opaque, white glass bottle - the product absorbs quickly. It's a milky-clear serum and for some reason, contains a whiff of fragrance (totally unnecessary, imo). Good stuff though - it soaks right in, leaves no oily residue or finish, and feels really super hydrating. Except for the fragrance (which I can live with) I love this serum.I also like the moisturizer. It too has that "light and refreshing fragrance" - nothing I can't live with, although I'd prefer if it wasn't in there. It's oil free, so an ideal choice for my complexion, especially for daytime use. No shine with this stuff - yay! The tube is 1.7oz - I go through this moisturizer pretty fast since there's a lot of area to cover (face and neck) so I'd have to classify this one as truly travel sized. At the price point I think they could have upgraded the size by a bit.All in all, the quality is here and I really like this set. Most of my criticisms are pretty minor; this is a high quality skincare box, with well formulated and researched products. I am enjoying all three of these. Recommended.
Fantastic set
I have been faithfully using Dermalogica products for over two decades now so I was thrilled to receive this set of three full-sized products. I have been using the daily microfoliant for years so I was excited to see how this milkfioliant product compares. It feels softer and more subtle than the other, so better for my sensitive skin I think. I like to shake a very small amount into the palm of my hand and then add a little of the Dermalogica glycolic cleanser and do this almost every night. It gives me a really good cleansing and makes the surface at my skin super smooth. The circular hydration serum is absolutely awesome… I hadn’t been using that in my routine, but I think it is going to become a new staple. I layer it over their biolumen vitamin C serum in the morning, and it works beautifully to keep my dry skin super hydrated… Just love it.As for the moisturizer, I have been buying intensive moisture balance for years and use that morning and night, but I have been finding that it’s a tad heavy for daytime use under make up. The active moist moisturizer is geared for more combination or oily skin types so I wasn’t sure it would be enough moisture for my very dry skin, but I actually quite like it for daytime use, especially in the summer and warmer months. If I use my vitamin C serum, and then the circular hydration serum, I can get away with this moisturizer under make up— it provides a nice oil free hydration that is lightweight and not too heavy. This comes in the 1.7 size which is usually around $47 I think plus the serum is typically around 65 as is the exfoliant so this is a really fantastic value set.
🫧Powder cleanser, serum, & lotion skincare set🫧
This is my first time trying Dermalogica products and while I’m not blown away, this is a nice set that could also be a great gift for the skincare lover in your life. Here are my thoughts about each item:🫧 Daily Milkfoliant - this is a powder cleanser which makes it awesome for traveling. I shake half of a teaspoon into my hand, apply a little water, work into a lather, massage in circular motions on my face, and then rinse. Since it’s an exfoliant only, your face should be clean before using. It doesn’t strip my skin of its natural oils and my face feels soft after rinsing. The exfoliating part is not rough or scratchy since the abrasives used (baking soda, corn starch, kaolin, oatmeal) are ground into a fine powder.🫧 Circular Hydration Serum - my favorite part about this serum is that it contains lactic acid which is the bomb for exfoliating, firming, and thickening the skin. It also contains hyaluronic acid that helps steal water for the skin. In addition, amino acids rock for hydrating. There are perfuming essential oils in this serum that I’m not a fan of. I believe all skincare products should be fragrance-free. There is no irritation when I apply it to my skin and it absorbs a little on the slow side.🫧 Active Moist - this is a lotion vs a cream that I use on my face and neck. The main benefit I’ve noticed, other than nicely moisturizing, is that it has a soothing effect on my occasionally hormonal, middle-age skin. This too, contains perfuming ingredients. When used together at night, I wake up to calmer and softer skin. Over time as my skin goes through a cycle, I expect I will also see increased brightness and improved texture and tone. While a little pricey in my opinion, the parts of this set work well together and provide some nice, if not miraculous improvements.
Works great
I love Dermalogica's exfoliants, I've been buying them for years, they smooth my skin out nicely, without being too rough on my skin, you can instantly feel a difference. I tend to only use the exfoliants though, I've only used a couple soaps until now, and they were ok. This system works great, especially now that winter is almost here. My skin starts drying out around now, so I was anxious to try this. The exfoliant is great, it has an almost milky texture, but helps smooth your skin out, while leaving it nice and soft, this has become my favorite of the exfoliants. I mix it with a bit of my cleanser instead of water and massage it into my skin. I follow up with the serum and moisturizer, and my skin is improving after only a couple weeks. No more tightness after washing, it helps slough off the dead skin, replaces the moisture, and helps my skin stay moist in the super dry cold air. You can use the exfoliant daily, it is gentle enough, but I use it every other day or two days instead and that seems to work perfectly.
