5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Sharp & Well Balanced Chefs Knife For All Ingredients Preparation
PresentationThe SHAN ZU Chef's Knife was supplied in a black cardboard box with Chinese lettering in red and the SHAN ZU branding in white on the front, and details in white on the rear.First ImpressionsRemoving the lid from the box I was greeted by a plain rear of the leather sheath which looked and felt thick and of good quality, though I would have expected the front of the sheath to be presented on opening. The military-grade frosted G10 fibreglass handle protruded from the open edge and a press stud to keep the knife secured, whilst there is a belt loop at the rear. The front of the sheath also had the same Chinese lettering and SHAN ZU branding as the box front. Drawing the knife from the sheath revealed it to have a blade of approximately 155mm from back edge to tip, which is steeply curved towards the tip. The top half of the blade is a black hammer finished look which gives the knife a nice aesthetic but also a businesslike look. The handle has a meshed grip and there is a triangular hoop for hanging which is part of the steel knife that protrudes above the handle but is not sharpened. There is a wider back stop allows the finger to rest comfortably and cut with pressure without cutting danger to the finger. The top edge also has a cut-out pattern that the thumb can rest on or press upon for downward pressure when cutting.Day To Day UseThe edge on this knife is superb for preparing home cooking ingredients, I have used this on almost all meats from duck to pork, chicken, beef, steaks and also vegetables and salad ingredients and it is a superb companion to slice, chop and dice. When held as intended using the thumb on the ridge and the finger on the backstop, the knife feels well balanced in the hand and gives confidence in the grip.Summing UpA Great kitchen tool, loved the fact a sheath was provided and a heavy duty, quality one at that. As a tool it delivers in cutting and chopping everything I have tried and cleans up well. This is a knife that should last a long time with care and attention – I would recommend hand washing – don’t put it in the dishwasher, I have seen a number of decent knives ruined that way.
5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and multi-tasking
This Japanese Chef’s Knife from Shan Zu is quite a knife at 15” long including the handle and the curve of the knife (it looks shorter due to the curve). It is handmade and forged from high carbon steel. The knife is well balanced and in addition to feeling good in my hand, it also looks good and you can tell immediately it is a quality knife. Although it is intended as a boning and filleting knife, with practice it can be used for a variety of cutting and slicing jobs in the kitchen. I find it as useful for chopping vegetables as I do finely slicing fish for sushi. I tried it on a leg of lamb and found it easier than usual to bone out the leg, the handle fits in my hand well which is not big but the knife twisted and turned as needed. I like the Full Tang fiberglass handle; it is ergonomic and it feels comfortable plus it is waterproof and non-slip which is great in a knife like this one. I like the leather sheath that comes with the knife including the small loop and stud to keep the knife secure in the sheath. You could hang it on your belt from the belt loop although I can’t see me doing that. This is a good knife for an experienced chef and seems to be of a professional standard. It is also a beautiful looking knife and a pleasure to use. It comes very well packaged and would make a great gift for the chef in your life.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good, sharp with a good blade
You receive a single 11 inch knife, has a clever type shapeYou receive a sharp knife, very sharp, the handle is small and I did find it harder to hold than a similar one I’ve used.Handle is shaped for grip.It comes with protective sheath cover which allows you to attach to a belt if you desire, the sheath is okay quality, the knife fits perfectly okayA good chef’s knife, I like the design and the quality, cuts very well, handy for the kitchen.
5.0 out of 5 stars I feel like I need a permit for this!
What a knife, I'm flabbergasted! Not only comes presented nicely and has it's own holder too. Now, it looks great and is heavy, which gives it good balance when holding, and it's handle is of a good size making it easier for me to hold it as I do have big hands.Cuts well straight out of the box, but I've had to sharpen it a bit more myself as it was sharpened up to its full potential. It makes it a great gift for anyone that like to cook and its price is on point.
5.0 out of 5 stars Very High Quality
This knife is of very high quality, very well made and very very sharp, it comes in an impressive presentation box, and the knife is kept inside a lovely sheath, very well presented and is lovely to hold and use, just be careful. Highly recommend.
5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely weight, balanced, fantastic for outdoor use, unique.
I have a little collection of unusual knives which are starting to look great on their magnetic holder. This knife has a unique hand finished look and will be a nice addition to the collection.I particularly like the rough hammered finish and the weight in my hand feels substantial and balanced. It’s not the sharpest knife I’ve received but it is very decent and it’s simple to sharpen and grip and it has great use-ability.I do tend to reach for it more than I thought I would. The description alludes to both Japanese and German steel when in fact it’s Chinese. It’s reasonable quality, not terribly hard, and edge retention is ok.It’s ideal for outdoor cooking, BBQ’s, camping and suchlike and the handle is perfect for this.I love the style and weapon-y look of it.It comes with a nice sheath made from leather and in my opinion is fairly priced.I hope you find my review helpful.
