The Neighbourhood of Walkinstown: From countryside to city suburb

Description:

About this item:

Back in the 1930s, Walkinstown, a part of Crumlin, consisted of a handful of dwellings containing less than 100 inhabitants. Greenhills was of a similar size, made up mainly of farms. By the early 1940s, sporadic housebuilding had taken place along Walkinstown Road. The rapid spread of large-scale housing developments beginning west of Crumlin village was to soon lead to the emergence of a new suburb known as Walkinstown. Greenhills was to be a part of this planned development and was to lose its Tallaght tag to join with the new area of Walkinstown.

The author, Robert Goggins, has lived in the area since he moved there as a child. He was one year old then. He began researching local history back in 1994/95 but had to abandon it due to other pressures in life, not least his involvement with Shamrock Rovers Football Club, where he has been a volunteer for over 40 years.

In this book, Goggins has put together the best account of how Walkinstown developed from sleepy countryside to a busy city suburb consisting of a mix of housing estates and industrial areas. Amongst the contents is a ‘Walkinstown in the News’ chapter that recalls just some of the stories that made the headlines through the decades.

The author finishes up with a chapter detailing his memories of growing up in the area, and it is clear what emotional attachment he has retained with Walkinstown-Greenhills to this day.
