For forty-two years, Sally Harrison has been building a library.

But Ella – Sally’s only child – fled to Australia twenty-one years ago after a heated exchange, and never looked back. And though Sally still dutifully adds a new paperback to the shelves every time the clock strikes midnight on July 11th, her hopes of her daughter ever thumbing through the pages are starting to dwindle.

Then disaster strikes and Ella is forced to return to the home she once knew.

She is soon to discover that when one chapter ends, another will soon follow.

Sally and her daughter, Ella have had a strained relationship for more than 20 years. Despite their distance, both physically and emotionally, Sally chooses a book for her every year on her birthday and inscribes it with a personalized message. She then places it in a special library that she has created, hoping that one day her daughter will read these messages and know she was loved. When a tragedy forces Ella to return home, she begins to realize that her memory of the events that led to the decades long estrangement may not be as accurate as she thought they were. This was such an emotional book that pulled my emotions out and slapped me in the head with them. It is both a heartbreaking and heartwarming journey that focuses on second chances, the enlightenment that comes from a change in perception, the difficulties associated with interpersonal relationships, making the effort to walk in another’s shoes, the gift of forgiveness, the pain of grief, appreciating people who you care about while they are still with you, and the importance of community. This is a fast and easy read that I ate up in one sitting, and is the perfect choice for a book club or book discussion because it is relevant from so many different points of view. The characters are dynamic and relatable, their stories will leave you re-evaluating your own life and relationships.

A sweet story of love and forgiveness, family and life. Characters were developed and storyline was easy to follow. If you're a book lover, add this one to your TBR list! Touches the heart, made me cry, made me hate for the end. Look forward to Kate Storey's next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved the library aspect of this book

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Watching the relationship between mother, Sally, and daughter, Ella, change during the time Ella is staying with her mother following an unfortunate accident was touching. It was moving to see Ella experience life with her mother and see all the ways her mother has had a positive impact on the lives of those around her. What a wonderful person and it is interesting to see how Ella begins to open her eyes and see that things are not always as they appear. The sense of community is a primary focus and has you wanting to experience the same sense with those with whom you work and live. I loved every time Ella thought in her mind, “If I were Queen of the World ...” It made me want to take up that mantra. This is a lesson of love, friendship, the value books have on our lives, community, memories, and family. Do not let this chance at a touching and heartwarming read. You should cherish every word that is expressed throughout the pages. They could change your life ... or at least your outlook on life.As a side note, I loved the library aspect of this book. I had a group of graduate students who gave me a copy of a book that meant something to them and each wrote a note to go along with it to let me know why they chose that book for me. In fact, one of the books I received was written in Japanese (absolutely beautiful artwork) and then I received an e-book version in English. I will never forget the thought that went into each of the books I received. After you’ve read this book, you will see how this relates to my memory of these books.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Memory Library

Absolutely beautiful story. Mothers and daughters have a bond that is either loving ,kindness and respectful or unloving, detached, prideful. This book is very relatable mother and daughter relationships and second books are special and unique. Well developed characters that are realistic, and compassionate. An uplifting and inspiring story I highly recommend. Enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply stunning

What a beautiful story! It starts out slow and somber, like a stormy morning, and builds to a glorious sunset. It’s a mesmerizing picture of life, love, and discovering what matters most. This book has changed my heart, and will stay with me for years to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and enlightening

First off I thought there was no need for the curse words. I am not prejudice, but I do seem to be judgemental. I have truly been working on this. More so because Jesus was not judgemental and he had a right to be. This story showed me Sally was neither prejudice or judgemental. I took care of my dad while he was going through dementia. It was a hard road to travel. Only with God's grace and mercy was my family able to travel that road with Daddy till his death. I do believe it was unselfish and wise for Ella, Charlie and Willow to move in with Sally to share their love with her and care and support her for the life she had left. And that life I'm sure was so much more fulfilling for Sally. Especially with Andrew back in her life.

3.0 out of 5 stars predictable, yet with its lovely features

L. · January 30, 2025

Although on the predictable side and slow moving rather than fast paced, if you’re in need of a feel good story of how an estranged mother and daughter make their way back to each other, this would be a good book to pick up. As an added plus for literary readers, you’ll find some of your favorite books referenced in this story. So why only three stars? The daughter, Ella, was whiny for too long, especially for a 42 year old successful business woman. Then, when she back slid on any progress she’d made in growing up, it was triggered by the flimsiest of excuses. I lost patience with her along the way. I did not, however, lose patience with the great love of books inherent in the story line and Sally’s personality. That was lovely.

Absolutely one of my new favourites

It is the kind of book that I wish everyone would read. It is not only an education in books to read and enlighten, but it also gives ideas of how to create your own space to give back. I am a better person because of this book. This book has become a classic for me. I will treasure it and suggest it to others.

A beautiful family tale about hope, life, and change.

I’m extremely late to reading this book, but I think it’s one of those books that you pick up at the right moment. I bought it last year when it first came out. This book is heartwarming while remaining realistic and there are so many current themes within its pages that it’s impossible not to feel touched by it at some point or points.I love this author’s writing whether I’m reading Lisa Timoney or Kate Storey books. She has a knack of making you see both sides of a subject extremely well, without telling you what to think and feel. Her writing flows lyrically and every storyline is woven together seamlessly. There’s a massive theme of change in this book. How we can all change, how change is possible, what we need to want change for it to happen, and sometimes we need a helping hand to know what we do want. This is a book that touched me deeply. I’m sure it will touch you just as deeply and leave its mark upon you. It’s a beautiful read, filled with hope, possibility, love, forgiveness and the meaning of change in all its forms. So much in one book and very much a book if you haven’t read yet, you really should.

A book that I am eager to recommend.

At first glance, you might think that nothing could be amiss in a story centered around books. And you'd be right - it’s amazing. The author has crafted a remarkable story that beautifully explores the profound relationship between a mother and her daughter. It feels as though the author invites us to experience a wide spectrum of emotions, from the thrill of joy to the depths of empathy. The story not only captivates but also resonates on a deeply personal level, making it a truly memorable read.
