At the end of some stories that claim to be "extraordinary," I end up feeling like I wasted too much time and energy trying to read my way onto the bandwagon. Not so with Johnny Walker. This book tells a great story and offers a still-timely viewpoint that I would have never been able to access otherwise. This is no spoiler when I say at the end Johnny Walker (the name still cracks me up) says the truth of what's happening in Iraq is much worse that what's reported is shamefully true. And it saddens me that both he and I acknowledge that his ideals for his homeland will probably never come to pass. But ultimately this is a story about hope. I learned a lot about a man I'll never meet, and it impressed me greatly - and humbled me when I realized that I can't relate to anything he's been through... but that really just made the lessons and details in this story that much more important for me to read.Without getting political, without grandstanding or preaching (which everyone on FB seems to be doing lately), Johnny Walker opened my eyes to a whole other aspect of war and fro politics, and he did simply by using a great voice for his own life story.I recommend it - and I highly recommend the Audible version. His actual voice adds a whole other layer to his story. Great stuff.
4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting perspective into the war in Iraq from a man who showed great character and love for his country.
CN: Johnny Walker is an interesting read that puts you in the heart of what was happening throughout the Iraq war from an on the ground perspective. Johnny and the co-writer do a great job of narrating you through some over the day to day events as well as the monumental and historical events of the US Army, Seal teams, Iraqi Police, and his family. If you have a friend or family member who has served in Iraq and want an inside look of life there, I can't imagine a better perspective than this...
5.0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading in America!
I am a former school Liberian and very picky about what I read. I spent many Yeats evaluating reading material for students. I truly think that this should be required reading for high school students. I can't even imagine all the activities, discussions and lessons I could teach from this book. From history and sociology, to geography and government, this story is about a person we as American should all inspire to be.The book is very well written and holds your interest. But more than that it is a testament to what true Admin spirit should be. Johnny is nothing less than a hero who's story reflects the ideals that founded our country. Honor, integrity,, family, knowing what Good is truly about and most of all freedom and the sacrifice it takes to accretive it.Everyone in this country should read this to get back to what we ate supposed to be about. A law should be passed that people should have to read Johnny Walkers story before they can hold a public office to remind them exactly why at they should be working towards.
5.0 out of 5 stars A REMARKABLE HERO
This is a book about the undaunted bravery, courage and selfless sacrifice of a true hero. During the 8 years he spent as a “terp” he untraveled countless plots against the Seals and our allies thereby saving countless lives. When Chris Kyle says he saved more lives than even Chris did that is really something. Johnny Walker is fascinatingly introspective, philosophical and complex given his ideas about religion, life, honor and integrity. This book is so well written that I felt like Johnny Walker was sitting in my living room and personally telling me his amazing story. From the moment I started the book I couldn’t put it down. It is so riveting it reads like fiction instead of the larger than life quiet unassuming hero that he is.It is an insightful look and perspective into life in war torn Iraq and the factions and insurgents. This is a different perspective than I have gotten though I have read several of the Navy Seal books. The brutality and lack of respect for life is a sad commentary of a country in turmoil. While Johnny Walker was unraveling plots against our military there were multiple assassination attempts against him and his family. His wife also demonstrated amazing strength and courage throughout the book but the trip from Mosul to the “safety” of Baghdad was especially harrowing. The Seals took it upon themselves to begin paving the way out for Johnny Walker in spite of his altruism for his country and desire to see growth and change in a country he loves. It eventually became obvious to Johnny that America was the best option for he and his family. I am grateful to the Seals, to Johnny and their families for the incredible sacrifice they have made for our liberty and freedom. They are not just the good among us but the finest America has to offer. The great news is that he is now living the dream and hopefully catching up on the liberty, freedom, peace and tranquility long overdue and that I know I often take for granted. I can never fully express my gratitude to Johnny Walker, the Seals and the rest of our military and their families for their sacrifice.
5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend this book! And I rarely feel strongly enough to write a review
After I finished reading, I bought a few more copies to give to a couple of my friends. This book is a much needed perspective on the Iraq War. Until now, the reporting has been only from our perspective. What this book highlights is how important this war was for the people of Iraq....which in my opinion is very important for all Americans to know. The book shows how a local Iraqi chose to risk everything, including his family, to fight alongside our guys - which is amazingly powerful if you think about it. I believe it would make a fantastic movie, there are so many aspects to the story that make it deeper than a war novel. I think this book is for someone that appreciates a more intelligent book with depth instead of a simple war thriller. I am undecided on Jim Defelice, but the story is pretty amazing. 6 stars if I could!
A hero..The Seals and Johnny Walker the Iragi.
Incredibly interesting and educational. I admire the Seals so much and to see the way they treated, taught and cared about Johnny Walker says a great deal. Johnny Walker was also a hero as he stood for what was good and if only more people would that we certainly wouldn’t be in the mess we have in society that we have today. Cheers to him, the Seals and the American people. Penny Costin
Read American Sniper then Jonny Walker
I have read the American sniper and the author alludes to "Jonny Walker" but you need to read this to understand what it was like during the war from a nationals perspective. A very brave man although he says it was need that drew him to be an interpretor, it makes you appreciate that we in the western world have been shielded in the most part from the horrors of these conflicts.
Better then expected
It’s an interesting story. Be prepared for the writing to mature as it goes on. Early on the writing is very rough and almost made me want to put the book down. It’s accented by moments of almost comic book style heroic actions difficult to paint as reality. It however matured into one more grounded in sacrifice, loss and a fresh start, less about heroic duties and more about the reality of the war.
Fact with artistic licence
This is an excellent read from a different perspective and in-depth reviews have covered the faction. Why only 4 stars then?Having encountered similar 'terps' I am fully aware of the risks they had and some were exceptional. Johnny Walker at times seems to go a little too far. Self and family safety are paramount, which he stresses, but from the start he was far from being a 'grey' man, in fact his background (basketball etc) made him stand out from the crowd and as such highly visible. It would have been very easy to identify, track and locate such a person in such a community. However, that aside it is a fascinating read, with a little bit of artistic licence.
Hard headed and heartfelt!!
This book is totally different than my usual staple of history or thrillers. I was attracted to it because of it authentic insight. Iraq has such an important history for thousands of years and this modern look at the current scene is first class from a first class Iraqi who experienced it from Desert Storm, onward.
