The Book of Pride: LGBTQ Heroes Who Changed the World

Description:

About this item:

THE BOOK OF PRIDE captures the true story of the gay rights movement from the 1960s to the present, through richly detailed, stunning interviews with the leaders, activists, and ordinary people who witnessed the movement and made it happen. These individuals fought battles both personal and political, often without the support of family or friends, frequently under the threat of violence and persecution. By shining a light on these remarkable stories of bravery and determination, THE BOOK OF PRIDE not only honors an important chapter in American history, but also empowers young people today (both LGBTQ and straight) to discover their own courage in order to create positive change. Furthermore, it serves a critically important role in ensuring the history of the LGBTQ movement can never be erased, inspiring us to resist all forms of oppression with ferocity, community, and, most importantly, pride

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book

j. · January 23, 2024

I bought this book as a gift for my son and haven't read it, but I did look through it a little and was very impressed with the information. It's also a book that feels really good to hold, sturdy and vibrant, like a collectors edition. We are very pleased with the quality and content of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful homage to LGBTQ elders

J.L. · June 12, 2019

"The Book of Pride" is beautifully crafted with interviews of LGBTQ elders from around the United States. The chapters separate the different interviews by categories: Community, Integrity, Liberation, Breaking Ground, Disrupters, Spirit, Survival, Bridges, Words, and Truth to Power. As someone who identifies well versed in LGBTQ history, I humbly read each interview and gained a new perspective. I wrote down many different events, organizations, and historical landmarks that I had no idea were in one shape or form created by an LGBTQ elder. There are still so many untold stories in marginalized communities and I think "The Book of Pride" is a fantastic testament that needs to be read/shared by the community, especially youth. Thankful for the pioneers featured in this book and in the archive.(disclaimer: I ended up applying for an archival assistant position after book purchase and was hired on!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great collection

T. · June 17, 2021

I really enjoyed this collection. While it recognized the major names of the quest for LGBTQ+ recognition and equality, it also brought light to the stories and people we don’t know. The scope of people that Outwords - inspired by the Shoah Project - reached is amazing and while I almost wish he’d highlighted fewer and left the interviews longer, there are no stories I’d have cut so I understand his dilemma. Was especially grateful foe those who died shortly after their interviews as these stories are so crucial. Like Mark Segal said about Stonewall, tell your own story not someone else’s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Important and Inspiring

C.O. · June 7, 2019

I was able to attend an event that the author, Mason Funk, did in West Hollywood where he read excerpts from four of the individuals in the book. Each person’s story highlighted their experience on a personal level as well as how they contributed to moving the greater cause of equality forward. As Mason talked about, they were all willing to contribute even when the immediate impact and ultimate outcome of their efforts wasn't clear. But they did it anyway because they knew what was right. This is such an inspiring book that gives you new insight into the personal efforts and sacrifices that people made all of the country in the spirit of LGBTQ rights. Both an important historical record and a guidebook of lessons and experiences that are relevant today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read

Good read, especially for Pride. Very diverse characters. There were some gaps I wished the author covered like protests in LA and SF that led to the Gay Rights Movement, but overall a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars LGBT heroes = American heroes

E.J. · June 6, 2019

I got so much out of this book. It’s such an amazing history, so inspiring to read the stories of the people who have fought for LGBT rights and who came out in the days when it meant risking everything. It really made me emotional. I wish they taught this stuff in schools. Everyone should know the names of these gay and lesbian and trans and bi heroes. I watched some of the interviews on the website too. Amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice introduction to the hero’s

As a white, heterosexual woman I wasn’t familiar with many of these people. This was a great way for me to learn about their lives and their contributions to America’s civil rights struggles.

Fantastic

Important Collection Of True LGBTQ Heroes and Survivors.

P.B. · June 26, 2021

What's not to like? This is a comprehensive, yet by no means exhaustive collection of so many who've overcome struggles many have not even heard about. From our elders born pre and post war, into poverty, segregation, extreme deprivation and so much more. That these heroic people all from what would become the American Gay community, were so marginalised makes your hair stand on end. But it isn't just about the US. It echoes many of our lives across the globe. These wonderful people used their pain for something good. Gave back to the community. And if there wasn't any cohesive community yet in existence? They created one. The material in these pages is but a fraction of the stories out there. The wonderful author could fill many such tomes. Highly recommended for any member of the Gay community and our supporters and family members. In fact, it should be in schools too.
