About this item:
"Even if readers have never seen a single episode of the show that made his career, Selleck’s style entertains, edifies, and effectively bridges the bookends of his career. Selleck has a knack for maintaining interest in the nuts and bolts of writing and producing Magnum, his own thoughts and actions in the evolution of the character and the show itself, and the difficult decisions he made along the way. Those in search of salacious confessions or anecdotes should look elsewhere--text is like the man himself: witty, charming, and honest... A celebrity memoir worth reading." — Kirkus Reviews
“Selleck’s earnestness and self-deprecating folksy style will satisfy celebrity watchers, especially Magnum, P.I. and Blue Bloods fans." — Library Journal
“A candid memoir. Fans of the iconic actor, will revel in his warmth, integrity, humor, and charm. Selleck is a TV star who keeps on shining, and his countless fans will be thrilled to be able to spend more time with him.” — Booklist
"Selleck delivers a breezy autobiography that covers his path from college basketball player to Hollywood heartthrob, describes his guest roles on shows including The Rockford Files and The Sacketts; his breakthrough on Magnum, PI; and his run-ins with showbiz royalty including Mae West and Frank Sinatra. [G]litzy recollections from a Hollywood stalwart…for the actor’s fans, it’s an ideal beach read." — Publishers Weekly

5.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining read regarding an interesting life.
Let's face it. Everyone enjoys Tom Selleck's work. From 'Magnum' to "Blue Bloods' to 'The Sacketts' to the films he did of Louis L'Amour novels for TNT. From LASSITER to QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER. He's simply an entertaining actor. In this memoir, he tells of being raised by a loving and supporting pair of parents, whom he adores to this day. (It's refreshing to see a celebrity, who, after they've made it, still loves and respects those raised him.)Selleck goes on to tell us of his basically accidental entry into show business, and how people helped him progress. He never says, 'I did this by myself,' and credits everyone who assisted him along the way.He ends the book as 'Magnum' ends, so one hopes there's a second volume coming out, as Tom Selleck obviously has a great deal more to write about: 'Blue Bloods,' his work for TNT, QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER and other fine motion pictures. Let's hope there is another volume coming out.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great insight into the industry. so much about the Magnum years.
Easy, quick and enjoyable read. So much coverage about Magnum P I years. Do I now want to stream that series since I never watched it? I do. Was that a goal of writing this book? I think so.
5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyed this book
This is just like sitting down with Tom Selleck for a casual, cozy fireside chat. It's written as he speaks and that style always feels so inclusive. Having recently 're-discovered' the Magnum P.I. series, we're happily immersed but we've broadened our horizons and found his movie 'Quigley Down Under' which has now become our favorite western of all time. HIs good humor weaves throughout the book and his appealing moral compass, without any pomposity, is actively at work. I guess I should add that we think he's a top-notch actor who never seems to be acting. He's the sort of guy who you wish lived next door or showed up for all the holidays. The book is a terrific read! Just don't speed-read it...it's worth savoring.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great story
If you are looking for a great book to read this summer, this book is it. Completely entertaining and inspirational. Mind you, I am already a Tom Selleck fan, not only because I respect him as an actor, but as a person. Having watched Magnum P. I. over and over again it was great to read about all that brought this series together, but see him be humble and gracious to all he dealt with. Apprecitiated how he instills the benefits of having great parents and upbringing. It plays to the person he became and is today. Thank you Tom for this novel.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read from a Quality guy
Not too deep into his personal life - it skims it but it's all about his journey from USC to full time actor. I personally thought it was a great book with plenty of life lessons in it. I'm glad I purchased it and recommend it highly.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wow
A very good look at an excellent actor. He has led a very interesting life. It was very interesting looking behind the curtain of some of my favorite shows!
3.0 out of 5 stars A solid and enjoyable read
While not as detailed or with as many "gory" personal details as many biographies, it feels proper for being Tom Selleck's biography. It's certainly not a masterpiece, but it is very enjoyable and a easy, fun read, and for fans of Magnum and other work of Selleck's, it's a must read. The biggest complaint is that it doesn't refer to any of his work after Magnum and 3 Men and a Baby, other than Blue Bloods, leaving a big gap of time unaccounted for. It's a bit jarring at first, but maybe a second biography is planned. Regardless, it's definitely worth a read, and an enjoyable experience.
Enjoyable for Tom Selleck fans, not a tell-all
If you're a fan of his, Mr Selleck talks alot about how he started and how his career progressed from the 60s through the 90s. Not too much on his Blue Bloods years, nor the non-acting private facets of his life.He does not reveal anyone else's dark secrets either, he writes with some personal integrity and with kind words and nice stories about some amazing people from older Hollywood and his peers. It was an enjoyable read if you want to get to know a bit about the man and the Hollywood he experienced.
"Laying the bricks"
A very refreshing book. Tom Selleck will always be Magnum to me. Even though I was too young to watch the series or remember a single episode fully, everything I have seen him in over the decades, my first thought is always it Magnum. If you are looking for a tell-all, name, and shame story, this is definitely not the book for you. I say this book is refreshing because it is almost universally accepted how toxic and cut throat the film industry is. Here Tom shows another perspective the camaraderie between actors coming up, the joy and excitement of creating great movies or tv series. These experiences might be coloured by Tom's humble personality, thinking the best of people or his mindset to always make the best of every situation he is in. This makes Tom Selleck an extremely likeable person. Yes, serendipity and luck had a hand in his success, but he is the one who "layed the bricks," learned his craft, and did his best in the situations.Tom keeps his personal life (and army career) very close to his chest. He hardly talks about these except key milestones. He does give full credit to all the people he worked with and met over the years. One thing that made me lose a lot of respect for another actor was in their autobiography. They wrote a chapter where a veteran actor (who they name) saved their life by getting stuntman to do a stunt before them, the stuntman that dies his their place is not named. The fact that Tom did name people who took bumps for him or (indirectly) pait the ultimate price for him is a great show of humanity. This book spans from Tom's serendipitous start in acting to the final season of Magnum. His post work after that is done in a chapter of him looking back. This is an excellent book, of a good person, but also sees good in others, but is not afraid to stand his ground.
