The propulsive and powerful new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Girl on the Train

Welcome to Eris: an island with only one house, one inhabitant, one way out. Unreachable from the Scottish mainland for twelve hours each day.

Once home to Vanessa: A famous artist whose notoriously unfaithful husband disappeared twenty years ago.

Now home to Grace: A solitary creature of the tides, content in her own isolation.

But when a shocking discovery is made in an art gallery far away in London, a visitor comes calling.

And the secrets of Eris threaten to emerge....

A masterful novel that is as page-turning as it is unsettling, The Blue Hour recalls the sophisticated suspense of Shirley Jackson and Patricia Highsmith and cements Hawkins’s place among the very best of our most nuanced and stylish storytellers.

"Atmospheric and marvelously twisty." Danya Kukafka, author of Notes on an Execution

“Reminiscent of du Maurier: art, islands, missing spouses ... Hard to put down.”  Mick Herron

"A masterpiece! Gorgeous and chilling." Shari Lapena

Well written with hollow ending

K.A. · October 18, 2024

I am giving this three stars because, while it was a page turner and well researched, the characters fates left me feeling hollow at the end. Stop reading the review to avoid spoilers. My main issue is with the antagonist. It is unclear what point the author is trying to make. Is it to make us sympathize with her and justify her actions? Do attractive men and women owe her attention and loyalty if she does stuff for them? Is it to make the point that female incels can also be violent when rejected and they have some advantage carrying out their misdeeds because people never suspect them until it's too late? Is it to make the point that using somebody's labour and then rejecting them rudely because you think they are beneath you, is not a good idea? I found the fact that the primary antagonist got away with three murders (and maybe four), two of them being spur of the moment when she got triggered, quite unrealistic -- the police found Julian's wallet in the water, but not his car? Ultimately, whatever the point, there is no justification for the murders, no justice served in the book, no character growth whatsoever, and the motivations of the antagonist remain banal to the very end, with no real explanation why she is that way beyond the fact that she is ugly and has been rejected and abandoned often. The good parts are the description of the artistic process (I like how Vanessa is focusing entirely on it) and the descriptions of the island in its various seasons.

An enjoyable read.

I read this book in two days. I was intrigued by the idea of an island with one occupant - and I am always drawn to a thriller. When it is discovered that an artwork contains human remains, that is when the book really begins. I liked the character development. The reader gets to know them quite well. But I found the ending abrupt, and leaving lots of questions. It almost seemed the reader is left to make up their own ending. Many questions were resolved - the who and when. But some - the why and what happens next, are left wide open. A few characters are hiding secrets and not all of those are dealt with in the book. However, I like the writing and had already read The Girl on the Train. I would happily read another.
