5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice book!
I am very glad I did NOT listen to a very long and NEGATIVE review of this book! I am a brand new knitter and even though many of the stitches are way beyond my skill level right now, I know that when I am ready to move on to the more advanced stitches they are just waiting for me in this great resource. I like and appreciate how the book is organized. The pictures are very clear and show great detail of the stitches. There are diagrams and yes, they are small but not impossible to read or access for me. The cover shows very beautiful colored swatches which is what first caught my attention to the book. The pictures of the stitches in the the book are shown in one cream color and some with cream and black, but this is not a problem for me because the detail and beauty of the stitches is plain and clear to me even when I take off my reading glasses and look at them! So, this is my humble, newbie knitter opinion of this book. For me, this is an excellent purchase that I am very happy with!
5.0 out of 5 stars One of my Favorite Stitch Dictionaries
This is one of the best stitch dictionaries I've ever used. Very clear photos and instructions, lots of variations, and concisely written. The only thing I don't like is having to convert/calculate for knitting in the round, but since this is the case for most stitch dictionaries, I can't really fault them. I had it bound with spiral binding at Aiea Copy Center ($3) and am able to either fold the pages completely to the back or have it open to a two page spread and it lays perfectly flat. As all knitters know, this is no small thing and a is very desirable trait in any stitching book. It would be nice if it actually came that way, but ACC does great work (mostly within an hour or two) and doesn't break the budget, so I'm good. Oh, and I really like the size, too. Compact. Fits in a bag or suitcase and on my lap without having to juggle.
4.0 out of 5 stars Very good book, but too small for comfortable reading
The book contains a wonderful selection of beautiful stitches. However, the compact size of the book comes means that stitch instructions don't have complete row-by-row instructions and the stitch charts are tiny. The book describes the rows in paragraph format:"1st row and 3rd rows: do this. 2nd and every alternate row: do that. 5th and 11th rows: knit all. 7th and 9th rows: do that. These last 12 rows form the pattern."So the reader has to take the time to wade through the paragraphs to search for the row. Hmm, this one must be an alternate row... what do you do on row 6? According to the chart, 6 isn't an alternate row like 4, 8 and 10... of course, unless you also read the chart you don't know it isn't just an alternate row. The text doesn't give instructions for row 6.It would be far easier to follow if the book was large enough to accommodate row-by-row instructions:Row 1: Do thisRow 2: Do thatRow 3: Do thisAlso, the stitch charts are tiny. I have good eyesight and it's a problem to read them, even with reading glasses. I have to photocopy them, enlarging them at least 200% to make them readable. The Vogue Knitting book doesn't have nearly as many stitch patterns, but uses this row by row approach so the instructions are easy to follow. (I own and like both books, for different reasons. Each stands on its own.)It would be well worth the extra expense to publish an instruction book such as 400 Knitting Stitches in a larger format to make it easier to use. I know publishing it with 3 ring binding instead of book binding is wishful thinking, but...
5.0 out of 5 stars Love the Stitch Patterns, but DON'T GET SPIRAL BOUND version
**Love this book but I DON'T recommend the spiral bound. The spiral binding was literally cut through some of the text and the stitch diagrams! Made that content useless. See photos.**WOW, WOW! This is hands down the best book of stitch patterns I've come across so far, and I've been checking out quite a few different ones. This one is CHOCK FULL of stitch patterns that I think are delightful and the variety is terrific. I will say that I have a strong preference for modern style and this book offers just that. While there are some traditional styles included, this one has so many wonderful modern patterns to choose from. Page after page of great patterns. Highly recommend this in PAPERBACK!
5.0 out of 5 stars SO Well Done!
I’m beyond pleased with this book. I have several stitch dictionaries and this is by far the best one of them all. The swatches look very nice and tidy. The color used for the swatches is perfect. The yarn weight used for the swatches is perfect too. Great, professional photos. Excellent selection of stitches and the big reason I purchased it was for the single colored slip stitch patterns… they are all just great! I’m so excited to add these to my designs.
5.0 out of 5 stars Book of 400 knitting stitches
Got my book today and was in great shape. I'm very happy to go back to knit something in years. My late grandmother taught me to crochet n knit.
3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I wanted
The book is beautiful, filled with lots of stitch choices. However, the print is too small and very difficult to read. Also, the instructions are all bunched into one or two paragraphs on each page. I was hoping for line by line instructions which are much easier to follow. I KNEW it was not wire- bound, but was going to take it to Kinkos for re- binding, so that it would lie flat. The book is not of use to me, so it is going to the local library.

Great Pictures!
This is a gift for my niece who recently discovered a love of knitting...I think this will be a great book to help her hone her skills...may have to buy another copy for myself

Written Clearly in English Notation and Chart Form
Excellent book for crwating your own textures in existing patterns or making a sampler blanket for example. Each stitch is described in English notation and with a chart of that is your preference, the pictures for each stitch are clear enough to make out pattern details and where the stitch is reversible the back of the work is also photographed.I have a good few knitting stitch and pattern books but note that the Japanese pattern books seem to be exclusively chart based which I find it impossible to work from except for Fairisle colour-work and the ones that are not based on charts seem to be be written in ‘new notation’ that appears to be becoming popular in US patterns but is not standardised or clear for many of us older knitters. This book however has clear English notation written instructions and a glossary of terms in the back for any uncommon acronyms, it is my go-to for a nice cable design or lacework pattern. The only minor criticism I have is the rows are all written along one long line of text. I am used to each new row instruction starting on a new line so I tend to write out the instructions in a notebook including the back rows (sometimes glossed over with just follow the lead of the previous row which can be confusing where there are cables to know what to k and what to p). This enables me to also record the number of edge stitches and repeats plus tally the number of row repeats as well, I noted that the ‘edge stitches’ and extra repeat stitches that you need to add at either end of the row can sometimes be a bit wrong so writing out the pattern by hand helps to avoid any mistakes from creeping into the work when a row contains multiple repeats of the pattern plus edge stitches.
