Lincoln's Virtues: An Ethical Biography

Description:

About this item:

William Lee Miller’s ethical biography is a fresh, engaging telling of the story of Lincoln’s rise to power. Through careful scrutiny of Lincoln’s actions, speeches, and writings, and of accounts from those who knew him, Miller gives us insight into the moral development of a great politician — one who made the choice to go into politics, and ultimately realized that vocation’s fullest moral possibilities.

As
Lincoln’s Virtues makes refreshingly clear, Lincoln was not born with his face on Mount Rushmore; he was an actual human being making choices — moral choices — in a real world. In an account animated by wit and humor, Miller follows this unschooled frontier politician’s rise, showing that the higher he went and the greater his power, the worthier his conduct would become. He would become that rare bird, a great man who was also a good man. Uniquely revealing of its subject’s heart and mind, it represents a major contribution to our understanding and of Lincoln, and to the perennial American discussion of the relationship between politics and morality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, there is more to learn about Lincoln

This is my fourth Lincoln biography to read, yet it stands out clearly from the rest. The interesting approach to discussing Lincoln's development morally gave a more holistic view of the man. There is much to cover in his life, and Miller does a fantastic job of showing how Lincoln developed his moral compass. I appreciated immensely that he did not leave out the struggles and mistakes in Lincoln as he grew. We all have problems with who we are and Miller did not shy away from Lincoln's. He was able to show how Lincoln used these to further grow.Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars How did it happen?

This is a fascinating look at how an untutored and barely educated frontier man developed an exquisite sense of compassion and empathy when others in similar circumstances did not. It is sort of a moral developmental history of Lincoln, which does not fail to recognize his mistakes and his sometimes painful failures as well as his successes. I do not know that anyone can truly chart the evolution of thinking and belief of a person as briliant and complicated as Lincoln, but Miller makes a truly thoughtful and convincing attempt. I know of no other book on Lincoln that comes close to this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting, if a bit long-winded

D.K. · January 2, 2004

Miller's careful discovery of Lincoln's moral and ethical disposition is amazingly perceptive. I am struck by how Lincoln's generosity and good nature did not diminish his moral resolve. Miller himself writes that whereas the saying goes absolute power corrupts absolutely, for Lincoln, greater power meant that he became all the more serious about his stewardship to do good. Miller asserts that this Lincoln hallmark was the result of Lincoln's deliberate and deep reflections about what he believed is right and wrong. One aspect of Miller's style that readers may not enjoy is that he is sometimes long-winded. He tends to enjoy exegesis of Lincoln's speeches or letters, and sometimes repeats himself with just a few different words. However, for me, this was just an attestation to Miller's admiration for his subject. I think even serious Lincoln readers will benefit from Miller's analyses, as he overturns more than a few common beliefs about Lincoln's character.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of the best books on Lincoln that I have ever read.

This book examines Lincoln's achievement through the ethical, legal, and political decisions he had to make before and during his presidency. He shows how Lincoln's brilliant mind took hold of problems that seemed almost beyond solution, suggested answers, and then implemented them through persuading other politicians to see what might be done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lincoln's Virtues: An Ethical Propaganda

P.V.d.M. · March 17, 2008

This book describes the age and circumstances Lincoln grew up and ruled in. It does this with great detail and numerous of small accounts and that's what makes it interesting to read.Throughout the book suggestions are made of Lincoln's thoughts and at some point this gets annoying, as there are no survivors to tell the tale of the man they knew. And how good do you have to know someone who's living to judge him on his virtues, let alone someone long gone. The ethical propaganda makes me deduct one star from this wonderful written book that can teach us a lot about the times and the decission making in our lifes. Whether Lincoln's virtues were based on the ones William Lee Miller writes about is something we'll never know...

Abraham Lincoln: Perspective and Insight...

R. · February 15, 2021

An interesting and most revealing look at Abraham Lincoln. This read is one of a process which one must or should refer to over again to gain an in-depth understanding and formulation of an evolving opinion about the character of the man called Abraham Lincoln. It’s not a book that delivers a conclusion or definition on his character, but allows the reader insight into the personality so as to gain an appreciation of the man in his time of life; under conditions of duress, success and tragedy. This book generates perspective and insight.

Lincoln, warts and all

A.C. · August 12, 2015

A fascinating account written in well-judged, powerful, typically American, prose. Thoughtfully written. this describes Lincoln, the skilled politician in preference to the Saint and does discuss the more contentious issues of his campaigns. A serious book about a serious man.

Five Stars

A wonderfully readable and elegant biography, focussing on Lincoln's self-development of character.
