Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1–3-Charlotte, a rabbit wearing safety goggles and a white lab coat, considers herself a serious scientist. She lives in the forest with her large family made even bigger when her famous scientist grandpa moves in. He tells her that one day she will make a difference in the world. When a mysterious illness strikes the forest creatures, including Grandpa, Charlotte seizes the chance to make a difference. She goes to work, but after examining all the sick, she is stumped. A team of doctors arrive. Charlotte tries to share the data she gathered, but the grown-ups ignore her. Undeterred, Charlotte works harder and finally figures out that the illness is associated with some lumpy carrots that all of those afflicted ate. She determines that the carrots have "Funky Forest Fungi" and concocts a cure for both the afflicted and the carrots. Detail-oriented illustrations created with pencil, ink and finished digitally with bright colors add a lively element. The clothing-wearing forest animals go about their day, doing very human activities, including using outhouses (for the gathering of specimens) and sleeping in wrought-iron beds. The prose, while not excessively wordy, is dense at times, using a small font and challenging vocabulary. The end pages contain a glossary for science words used in the book and a message from Charlotte. Charlotte asks kids to write to her how they have made a difference using science. VERDICT Though very young listeners and readers may find this book a challenge, this is a good book for educators to share with budding scientists. -Mindy Hiatt, Salt Lake County Library Services

"Farley’s comical cartoon illustrations... make this story of scientific inquiry and experimentation go down easy. Andros nicely emphasizes research methods, confidence, resilience, and the importance of curiosity to scientific vocations."  — Booklist

5.0 out of 5 stars My granddaughter Charlotte loves this!

S.W. · May 26, 2022

Of course I bought the book because my granddaughter’s name is Charlotte ( she’s 3). She loves the story because Charlotte helps all of the animals in the forest. The animals are getting sick (similarities to the pandemic) and Charlotte helps to find a cure and make the animals better. Some of the words are a bit beyond her vocabulary (and comprehension) so I just improvise in some areas to make it easier for her to understand. She loves the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Empowering book with a STEM focus

A fun, empowering book with a STEM focus. Great for any child, but I love that the scientist is a girl! My granddaughter, who is almost five, asked me to read this book (and the other one, Charlotte the Scientist Gets Squished) three times (each!) over the weekend! She loved them both. I loved the grandfather's words to Charlotte every day: "Charlotte, you are going to make a real difference in the world." And she did! Would I buy this book again? You bet! And I'm waiting eagerly for more books in the series--Please!

We (mom and boys 5 and 9) LOVE Charlotte! She’s a super scientist and in this book, like her first, she teaches kids a science/research principle.A mystery illness is hurting the animals in the forest so Charlotte must make a hypothesis and set up a controlled experiment to figure out an answer. This book allows for the theme that no matter how big you are, you can make a difference by being you!Camille Andros’ science is sound and Brianne Farley’s illustrations are so dang colorful and fun - they put together another winning book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging and Educational

My children loved the first Charlotte book so we were thrilled when we heard another was in the works! Charlotte is a lovable character that both my girls and boys can relate to. She's curious and clever all while having a persistence that's endearing as she questions her own abilities in the midst of working through other issues. My kids give it 5 stars for enjoyment and I add my 5 stars for repeated character appeal. Both Charlotte books are must haves in a family library.

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this book

This is a great book and my 3 year old loves to flip through it and recite the story. She also makes her grandpa read it to her every time he comes over because "Grandpa" is a key part of the story. It also gives him the opportunity to reinforce the key theme of this book - she will make a difference in the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even little ones can do big things!

We loved this book! My 7, 5, 2.5 year olds all are obssessed with Charlotte. My son is a very serious soul and this story of Charlotte being dismissed for being little and believing in herself anyway resonated so strongly with him. My kids have been playing doctors and research scientist ever since. I love the story, illustrations and the message.

I ordered this book with my younger kids in mind but the day it arrived my 12 year-old son grabbed it and read it through. The vocabulary isn’t dumbed down for young readers but the storyline and *delightful* protagonist draw them in. I love having this book in our family library and highly recommend the first Charlotte book too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great follow up story to Charlotte the Scientist is Squished!

Wonderful story. We loved Charlotte the Scientist is Squished, so we gave this a shot. Loved it as much as the first! Great message about believing in yourself. Both my 8-year-old and my 3-year-old (Charlotte!) love it. Always cute drawings and great rhythm of the wording.
