She has written numerous books for Scholastic including Easy-to-Make Books That Target Specific Reading Needs (co-author), Shoe Box Learning Centers: Phonics, Teaching With Favorite Cynthia Rylant Books, Building Foundations in Math: Shapes, and 40 Sensational Sight Word Games. Joan is co-owner of On the Ball Productions, a company that develops educational products for teachers and kids. She lives in Burlington, Vermont with her son.
Holly Grundon, a former art director for Scholastic Inc., has 20 years experience in the design field. She has designed more than a hundred books for Scholastic Teaching Resources, including the Shoe Box Learning Center series and the Big Book of Pocket Chart Poems: ABC’s and 123’s. I recently purchased the "Week-by-Week Phonics Packets" for my child, and it's been a game-changer in our reading routine. The packets are well-organized and make learning phonics engaging and manageable. I've noticed significant improvement in my child's reading skills, and they actually look forward to their daily phonics practice now!

My autistic son is working through three pages a day this summer and then we do 20-30 sight words. He is enjoying it too. The only thing I wish I had was an answer key for some of the categories and google didn’t help much either. We are almost halfway through and this is for summer learning.

I am a retired speech language pathologist and I really like this book of phonics packets. I am using it for a 5-year-old homeschool child. I like the pacing and the different activities to learn phonics. Each week has a review page and she likes the five stars at the bottom for her to choose how she thinks she did every week. And of course she always picks five stars, lol

I think this book is okay for teaching and reviewing phonics with students. I wouldn't say that it is for K though because there is a lot of reading that goes along with the activities. I understand that you have to teach your students to use it and model the activities for them but they are kind of complicated and very wordy. I also wish the format was different, if you are purchasing this book chances are you are a teacher and your intention is to make copies of what you need for your classroom and students. Having to copy from a regular book takes extra time and just is a hassle. I ended up ripping out the pages to make copies for my students and then just paper clipping it to the cover. The pages also aren't perforated. I've really wanted to use this with my SPED resource room students and I have given it for homework for the last 2 week (1 packet per week) but I am not sure if I will continue to use it. It's just very wordy and the pages are busy. It's definitely way too hard for kindergarten students... after weeks 4 or so. To be completely honest I am still in search for the perfect phonics resource.
LOVE this learning resource book!
This is one of those book you should get for homeschooling or just for review.Its laid out wonderfully and written in a way that is super super easy for kids to follow along with or as a parent teach your little one.There is a great balance of questions per page with pictures, it doesnt feel like your getting a big book with only 3-5 questions per page. Its a really good one!
