About this item:

Newbery Honor Book. “A gripping, compassionate portrayal of a boy’s struggle with conscience” (Kirkus) by bestselling author Marion Dane Bauer.

While on a bike trip, Joel’s best friend Tony drowns while they are swimming in the forbidden, treacherous Vermilion River. Joel is terrified at having to tell of his disobedience and overwhelmed by his feelings of guilt, even though the daring act was Tony’s idea, and Joel didn’t know that Tony couldn’t swim. But Joel’s loving and protective father will help him deal with the tragic aftermath—and understand that we all must live with the choices we make.

“A powerful, soul-stirring novel told simply and well.” —Booklist (starred review)

“This is a devastating but beautifully written story of a boy’s all-consuming guilt over the role he plays in the death of his best friend. Bauer’s honest and gripping novel joins the ranks of such as Katherine Paterson’s Bridge to Terabithia in its handling of these issues.” —Publishers Weekly

“Descriptions are vivid, characterization and dialogue natural, and the style taut but unforced. A powerful, moving book.” —School Library Journal

5.0 out of 5 stars Helps to Teach the principle of "Making Your Word Yes Mean Yes"

This was a book which taught a powerful lesson of what our honor means. Although my son is 14 years old, he and I enjoy being read to and it was my turn to read to him. He asked I read this every night until we finished it. It was a quick read and opened a meaningful discussion of not only the power of words but the consequences of keeping or not keeping our word. Since reading this book, every now and then when he promises me something, he'll look over at me with a sly smile and say "On My Honor" and I know it means something. This was a very good book, somewhat predictable but yet gripping.

This book was a suggested reading for my 11 yr old Granddaughter who will be starting Middle School this fall. So I read it first and I thought it was excellent. It is about taking a stand for what is right, not giving in to pressure from your peers to do something you know is wrong. It was a little sad because of the choice one boy made. Jennifer read it and she like it and she doesn't like to read. If you have a child 9 and above, I recommend this book as one to read and discuss.

This novel is a powerful read. As soon as I finished it, I took it to my 5th grade neighbor. Great read especially for boys who struggle finding the right book.

A heart wrenching story of a childhood tragedy. A tragedy that impacts, forever, the lives of two families. Joel will never forgive himself over the loss of his friend. I watched a childhood friend get hit and killed by a car 70 years ago. That image is still vivid in my memory. This may be a children’s book but there is a deep message concerning unintentional consequences.I think it gave my grandson a deeper understandingly of what it means to give your word, On Your Honor!

I read this book back in elementary and always remembered it fondly. It's bittersweet. I love reading and so does my daughter, so I bought this book for her. She finished it in 2 days. Loved it
