“Andrea Rangel’s
AlterKnit is what helped me get started in colorwork, and KnitOvation is what makes me love colorwork. The designs are fun and make you think of taking sweaters in an entirely new direction. Her writing and observations take the guesswork out of designs and make colorwork less scary and more exciting.” —Dana Williams-Johnson, Yards of Happiness

KnitOvation is just as much fun and whimsical as it is informative and inventive. Would recommend to knitters of all levels!” —Candice English, The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers

“Andrea’s fresh take on colorwork motifs is just the thing to inspire color play in your knitting. But what I love most is that she doesn't stop there—she goes the extra mile in

Stunning life-size photographs seal the deal; this book is a gem!” —Mary Jane Mucklestone, knitwear designer & author

“Another glorious selection of colorwork stitch patterns from the very clever and fun minds of Andrea Rangel and her designing-partner husband. But this book goes much further: just as valuable is the discussion of different yarn fiber and colorings and how they work with colorwork patterning. Plus, there’s a handful of charming projects and guidance from Andrea on how to adapt them with your own choice of patterns and colors.” —Kate Atherley, knitwear designer & author

“Andrea has written an invaluable and trustworthy resource that both sparks a knitter’s imagination and demystifies knitting modern colorwork motifs.

“Andrea’s second book of knitted motifs is as charming as it is useful! The stitch patterns in
KnitOvation are accessible, clear, and best of all—they have a sense of humor. A delightful addition to every colorwork knitter’s library!” —Meghan Fernandes, co-founder & creative director, Pom Pom Quarterly

“From the elegant to the eccentric, from the simple to the silly, there is a motif here to inspire every knitter. Of course, you’ll find a lovely array of nature-inspired designs, but it’s not every stitchionary that features rubber duckies or a magic 8 balls. Need a hat idea for your New York City friend? Look no further than the rat motif! Andrea also includes a wealth of practical tips to help knitters pick out the right yarn, master techniques, and even provides design inspiration.” —Patty Lyons, knitwear designer & author

5.0 out of 5 stars Versatile, whimsical reference

K.C. · January 16, 2025

There's a great mix of geometry and whimsy in the designs. Love that the index is broken down by stich repeat, to make substituting a motif into an existing pattern a breeze

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual patterns

M. · December 18, 2024

Really like all the unusual patterns, the directions are clear, and dang the type font is absofraginlutely perfect. Easy to read and follow. So much thought was put into this book

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of its' kind!

C.L.P. · September 17, 2024

Having been a knitter for 60 years, and owning upwards of 600 knitting books, I can tell you this is the best pattern collection for those who like to design their own creations.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're thinking about getting this, get it!

B. · December 26, 2024

I should have bought this book sooner! If you need to peak before buying, you can on YouTube, but seriously if you're looking at knit books and thinking about getting it, you can feel confident this is the one and get it. You won't regret this one. I got this one and hooktinary, which I love both, but this is by far my favorite out of any knit, crochet or weaving book I've bought so far. So much more than I expected and it's big.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don’t buy this book…

R.D. · October 10, 2023

Unless you, too, want to instantly bookmark at least a dozen motifs just to start with, and be tempted to abandon all other projects just so you can cast on at once! This book includes a really helpful introduction showing the same motif swatched in different yarns, which is a great primer to help you sort through your stash and get started. As an experienced knitter, I don’t need the instructions on stranded colorwork knitting, but I did skim through them and found them to be clearly illustrated and well-written.All in all, another fantastic collaboration from Andrea and her husband Sean, and worth every penny!

4.0 out of 5 stars Variety of motifs, heavy on plants

L.M. · January 7, 2025

Clearly written and contains a wide variety of motifs, from trains to toilets, mice to dinosaurs. Has both standalone motifs as well as continuous or "all over" type motifs, each with both a chart and photograph of test-knit swatch. Charts are designed for stitches that are the same height as width, so if your knit stitches (like most) are taller than they are wide, the resulting work may appear distorted.I love that there are indexes in the back to look up motifs that fit your project by number of stitches or rows in the repeat, but I was disappointed to find them not completely accurate. I ended up inspired to make my own spreadsheet of all motifs in my own library, including these. If you're looking for a colorwork motif dictionary, you might find it helpful to know the breakdown of these by category:Food - 7%Plants* - 38%Animals - 20%Geometric/Abstract - 21%Scenery/Seasonal/Recognizable inanimate objects - 20% (ish)* Many of the flowers or leaves are quite similar to each other. (3 versions of a maple leaF, for example), so counting them all as different patterns felt like a stretch in some cases.Average number of stitches in a repeat of a motif: just over 17, with a range of 5-48 stitches.Average number of rows in a motif: about 16.5, with a range of 5 to 46 rows.Pattern/design nstructions are clearly written, with good tips for modifying them.

I want to use every single pattern in this book! I mostly use them for hats.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great follow-up!

I love this book! Great follow-up to Alterknit by the same author. Wonderful charts, some are hilarious, all look good.

Knitting colour-work designs

Love this book. While I may not knit one of the designs exactly as shown, it will provide unlimited inspiration.

Awesome

Lots of cool and fun patterns to incorporate into your knitting work. Good clear illustrations and photos of completed knits.I will use this book a lot and there are many cool patterns to get on with.

Tolle Muster

S. · September 10, 2024

Personally I don't like the patterns but lots of pattern.

Un po delusa

D. · December 15, 2023
