Toxic Prey (A Prey Novel)

Description:

About this item:

Lucas Davenport and his daughter, Letty, team up to track down a dangerous scientist whose latest project could endanger the entire world, in this latest thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author John Sandford.

Gaia is dying.

That, at least, is what Dr. Lionel Scott believes. A renowned expert in tropical and infectious diseases, Scott has witnessed the devastating impact of illness and turmoil at critical scale. Society as it exists is untenable, and the direct link to Earth’s death spiral; population levels are out of control and people have allowed disarray and disorder to run rampant. While most are concerned about deadly disease, Scott knows that it is truly humanity itself that will destroy Gaia. It’s only by removing the threat that the planet can continue to prosper, and luckily, Scott is just the right man for the job…

When Scott then disappears without a trace, Letty Davenport is tasked with tracking down any and all leads. Scott’s connections to sensitive research into virus and pathogen spread has multiple national and international organizations on high alert, and his shockingly high clearance levels at various institutions, including the Los Alamos National Laboratory, make him the last person they’d like to go missing. As the web around Scott becomes more tangled, Letty calls in her father, Lucas, help her lead a group of specialists to find Scott as soon as possible. But as Letty and Lucas begin to uncover startling and disturbing connections between Scott and Gaia conspiracists, their worst fears are confirmed, and it quickly becomes a race to find him before the virus he created becomes the perfect weapon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crazy environmmentalists choose the most lethal cure

Sandford creates a crime that matches in a terrible global scale the global fear of many environmentalists that the world is past a tipping point. If you think that the solutions proposed by environmentalists are too extreme, this book will show a frightening level that you did not anticipate. The threat is so calamitous, that Sandford and daughter roll out the guns and the troops and .... let the killing begin. Lots of violence, lots of inevitable plot twists. But also, the inevitable resolution. How one can make a global catastrophe into fun is proven to be rather .... easy. Sandford combines horror with plain old romance. This book is great fun to read. Its biology is believable if a bit sketchy. The environmentalist nuts are a bit hackneyed as a group, but the individuals are interesting. And of course...the usual guns and crack shots. The usual chase with clever chasers. The usual happy ending. OK..a few hundred die, but what is that when you are talking about a global catastrophe!

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome as usual

Fast paced, well written. Great story, but so scary if you think about it the possibilities in our current reality!

4.0 out of 5 stars The "Old" Sanford is Back!

M. · May 27, 2024

After the pot-boiler, "Dark Angel", I was of mixed emotions regarding whether or not I would continue with any of the Sandford novels. Fortunately, the Sandford many of us have eagerly read with delight returns in "Toxic Prey". The plot is twisted and timely. Humor is injected at appropriate times. Character development is rich. To witness Lucas befuddled by his daughter's relationship is a new and entertaining conundrum with which most fathers can relate. "Toxic Prey" is both gripping, fast-paced, and a fun read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another page-turner from John Sanford

K.E. · September 5, 2024

This book is a good read with plenty of action to keep the plot from bogging down. Of course, you have to suspend a bit of disbelief to credit all the improbable twists and turns leading to the resolution of the threat. Nonetheless, it is well-written and an intriguing story line given the world we live in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Page Turner of Great Credibility

John Sandford, along with Michael Connelly, keeps turning out excellent books, whereas Grisham and Baldacci I believe are suffering from too much output. In this book, a very realistic plague threat is combatted by the traditional characters in this arc of Sandford books. It's highly credible, fast-paced, and never strains credibility too much. The dialogue of Sandford's characters is one of his great writing strengths and you feel as if you part of the conversations. A terrific read.

5.0 out of 5 stars another great book from Sandford

Difficult to put down. Interesting, on the edge storyline including Lucas and Letty as professionals working together. Includes other characters from past books. Does not disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good Book- Toxic Prey

P.B. · August 13, 2024

This book has enough plausible ties to current events and facts that it is believable. Moved along at a good pace and the story segued into the next chapter nicely. The Letty/Hawkins relationship was heavily pushed so I would expect to see our heroine involved with him again. Missed Rae’s partner Bob. A good read.

3.0 out of 5 stars My least favorite Prey book

R.K. · April 26, 2024

Disappointed in this new Prey book. It's an overused plot, a predictable outcome and is really more of a Letty book than a Prey book. I've read all of Sandford's books...Prey, Letty, Virgil and the Kidd books, and this is one I don't really recommend. Don't really enjoy books with a political slant one way or the other, and Sandford has been leaning into that and leans pretty hard with this one. Letty bedding the MI5 woman chaser two hours after she meets him was way out of character and their relationship lends nothing to the story. Hoping this guy is not going to become a regular feature in future Letty books. Maybe my main problem is I liked the old Lucas from the beginning of the series. Characters have to evolve but the evolved Lucas is not as interesting or enjoyable as he once was. Also prefer the Lucas character over Letty and expect a Prey book to concentrate on Lucas with maybe some sprinkling of Letty or Virgil. This book is more Letty than Lucas, and unfortunately no Virgil at all.

Spannend

Another excellent book to add to the Prey series by John Sandford. The book hits the ground running and never really stops. Had to read it straight through.
