From yet another derivative science fiction novel by Michael Crichton comes this equally derivative and flaccid movie, in which three top Hollywood stars struggle to squeeze tension and excitement out of material that doesn't match their talents. You're supposed to find awe and mystery in Crichton's story about a team of scientists and scholars who discover a 300-year-old alien spacecraft deep on the ocean floor, but mostly you feel that this is all much ado about nothing. The exploration team consists of a psychologist (Dustin Hoffman), mathematician (Samuel L. Jackson), biochemist (Sharon Stone), and an astrophysicist (Liev Schreiber), and when they enter the alien ship they discover a mysterious sphere inside. What they don't know is that the sphere has the power to manipulate their thoughts and perceptions, and before long the scientists' undersea habitat is a veritable haunted house of frightening visions and creeping paranoia. Who can be trusted? What is the sphere's purpose, and why is it on the ocean floor? Sphere makes some attempt to answer these questions, but the film is a mess, and it leads to one of the most anticlimactic endings of any science fiction film ever made. There are moments of high intensity and psychological suspense, and the stellar cast works hard to boost the talky screenplay. But it's clear that this was a hurried production (Hoffman and director Barry Levinson made Wag the Dog during an extended production delay), and as a result Sphere looks and feels like a film that wasn't quite ready for the cameras. Though it's by no means a waste of time, it's undeniably disappointing. The special edition DVD includes audio commentary by Hoffman and Jackson and a behind-the-scenes featurette, Shaping the Sphere: The Art of the Special Effects Supervisor, exploring the alien ship's design and creation by special effects technicians. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the horror flick I imagined
I always thought this was going the way of a horror movie with the suspense and more, but it was strictly a PG-13 rating. I don't like horror personally and was glad it didn't go that route. The leads did a great job as expected, and there were many twists. The plot wasn't revealed until the very end. The writer must have utilized the 'red herring' approach because it kept me guessing. Much better overall than I thought it would be - going in.

4.0 out of 5 stars Holds up pretty good to Crichton's novel
After finishing up Michael Crichton's novel, I was intrigued to go back and watch this film but was taken back a bit by its low rating. I think that is why I was pretty impressed with this film. The three lead characters from the novel are played by Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sharon Stone, who all give fine performances as their characters from the novel. (I would actually say that the characters are far less annoying in the film, one of the only drawback to the novel). As far as keeping with the intent of the Crichton's story, I think it holds up very good. It's intriguing and digs into science and the psychological aspects of investigating an unknown entity that are compelling and very cerebral. Overall, this was pretty good.

Loved this film but couldn't find it on streaming. A film that makes you question what extraterrestrial life* could be like.
5.0 out of 5 stars Humorous anecdote (small spoiler)...
This isn't so much of an actual review than it is a humorous anecdote centered around this film. This is a movie my family would rent fairly often from Blockbuster (I feel so old after writing that). I don't remember how old I was when I first watched it, but my older brother did not take to the jelly fish scene very well. To this day he is terrified of them. Years and years later we were at the beach. Dad rented one of those mini sail boat things and we went out a ways. My brother and I (I was in high school still he may have graduated at this point) jumped off and swam around a bit (with life vests). We saw a jelly fish maybe 30 feet away. It wasn't getting any closer, nor was it between us and the boat, but he totally flipped. Without warning (and in the blink of an eye), he had positioned his feet on the straps of my life jacket (along my ribs/just above my hips) and STOOD UP on me. I don't have any idea how he kept his balance because I was thrashing all around (the level of the water being mid-forehead on me). And while I was choking on sea water and gasping for air the top of my head followed by my face and shoulders grew very warm. And all of a sudden the sea water I was choking on put on a strange taste I later realized was urine... He ended up jumping off me and I am pretty sure ran across the water like those lizards do back to the boat. Once I caught my breath I looked and the jelly fish had moved (sideways, not towards me) about 6 feet.Anyways, I guess if there is a moral to this story it is to not let little kids watch this movie and if you do... don't take them to the beach (ever again). If the moral of the story doesn't apply to you then I hope you got a little chuckle from my misfortune.(I do actually really love this movie despite it being the source of my head getting peed on and me nearly drowning in salty pee water... 5/5)

Great sci-fi. Really excellent performances by Hoffman
Can't say too much without spoiling the story. Great sci-fi. Really excellent performances by Hoffman, Stone and Jackson. Thought provoking, if you're into 'what if...?' The original Solaris did it better, but I don't think there are many, even hardened film buffs, who are up to 4 hours of a 70's foreign film with a record number of silent moody moments (I did it thinking something was about to happen...does that show perseverance or naivety? Sphere covers the concept well and keeps you wondering what's going on. Ending is up for discussion if you pack in a few mates who like that kind of entertainment.
scince fiction movie....
good at the beginning, the movie disappoints you as you go on watching...anyhow watchable for the acting talents of Dustin Hoffman and Samuel L Jackson....the audio and video quality of the dvd is very good and can be enjoyed at home theatre...
