College Without High School: A Teenager's Guide to Skipping High School and Going to College

Description:

About this item:

Because the real world is the best education.

High school can be boring. High school curriculum can be frustrating and out of touch.

So what is the answer for young people whose creativity, bright ideas, and boundless energy are being stifled in that over-scheduled and grade-driven environment?

What would you do if you could go to college without going to high school? Would you travel abroad, spend late nights writing a novel, volunteer in an emergency room, or build your own company? What dreams would you be pursuing right now?

College Without High School shows how independent teens can self-design their high school education by becoming unschooled. Students begin by defining their goals and dreams and then pursue them through a combination of meaningful and engaging adventures.

It is possible to pursue your dreams, and gain admission to any college of your choice.

Boles shows how to fulfill college admission requirements by proving five preparatory results: intellectual passion, leadership, logical reasoning, background knowledge, and the capacity for structured learning. He then offers several suggestions for life-changing, confidence-building adventures that will demonstrate those results.

This intriguing approach to following your dreams and doing college prep on your own terms will be welcomed by students (and their parents).

"Words fail me. This is the most inspiring, convincing, and practical case for self-directed learning that I've seen in many years. Mr. Boles draws on time management principles from the business world and on his own adventure-packed youth to map out a brilliantly simple way that people can live life to the fullest while also preparing masterfully for admission to college. If you believe, as I do, that our time on earth is a grand gift not to be squandered, then buy this book for all the teenagers you love, and watch as all manner of quests, discoveries, inventions, and miracles emerge."

"This splendid book is intended as a step-by-step guide, but can be read with profit by anyone interested in moral philosophy. Exceptionally clear, insightful, and lively, it will take its place as the definitive work on the subject."

"Boles offers an antidote to the over-scheduled, grade-driven, and sadly uncreative existence of most high-schoolers today. It's time for teens to take control of their own education. Yes, they must learn the basics. Absolutely. But as Boles explains, self-motivated teens can cover those topics efficiently and free up more of their time for further learning. This book is a crucial guide for students and parents interested in replacing the old carrot and stick that's at the heart of today's education system with intrinsic motivation―selfdirectednessand autonomy that leads to real learning and growth."

"Blake Boles has found the solution for those students who find regular high school oppressive. Outstanding advice! His book is absolutely right on about the many options for success for students who have a little different approach to life and study."

" College Without High School is an excellent update to the groundwork provided by John Holt, the Colfaxes, Grace Llewellyn, and other unschoolers. I found it engaging and filled with concrete understanding and useful suggestions for Self Directed Learners of all ages, in or out of school."

And What About College?: How homeschooling leads to admissions to the best colleges and universities

" College Without High School is a fantastic resource for homeschoolers who want to stand out from the rest of the college admissions pack. However, especially for unschoolers and other eclectic learners, it is also an inspirational description for how adventurous self-directedlearning can lead to college admission. This is an entertaining workbook, how-to manual, and educational philosophy text that will help teenagers and their families figure out how to get into college without a conventional high school degree."

Blake Boles shares what homeschoolers have known for decades: teens are thriving everywhere without attending school! Blake will inspire you to seize the day and live well now, with every bit of confidence that the doors to college will be wide open to you. I am thrilled to have another messenger trumpet the truth that school is optional. I recommend all parents and educators to acquaint themselves with this information."

5.0 out of 5 stars How to Fit a Square Peg into a Round Hole

Congratulations to Mr. Boles for providing a blueprint for homeschoolers/unschoolers who may wish to go to college. Rather than ignore what college admissions offices seek, he shows homeschoolers how to craft their experiences into a standout portfolio that will both impress and reassure the admission's officer about the homeschooler's unique education. Need to demonstrate one can follow through in a structured environment? He shows one how. Need to prove one has the mental chops to absorb challenging material? He shows one how. Need to document leadership, creativity and maturity? He shows one how. All this within a framework of following one's interests and dreams. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Teen Should Read This Book!

Great book for teens on how to take control of your education, go to college, realize your career goals, and have fun doing it.I am a parent who read this book because I was not sure if I wanted to continue homeschooling through High School in the traditional way, or place my child in a High School. Now I am sure I don't have to do either one. Blake Boles shows teenagers how to take control of their education step by step to become Self Directed Learners and stay motivated.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone

There are a lot of kids who are smart enough to go to college, but have a lot of trouble in high school for various reasons: disability, social reasons, travel, work, etc. Kids who are able enough, but are round pegs that the school systems are trying to hammer into square holes. I spoke with an old friend who's son was very effeminate, teased and bullied in high school. He quit after 10th grade, went to a community college, then went to one of the best colleges in the nation to finish his degree. My kid has social issues and so I wanted to investigate. I ordered this book and only read about 1/4th of it before putting it down. It addresses kids who are driven by a particular passion, who are strong and independent, and who have the means and ability to travel extensively, become young entrepreneurs. It is rather narrow in this respect, and doesn't even begin to touch on the situations of ordinary kids who want to take a different route than the ordinary school system. This is a great book if your kid is like a young entrepreneur. If that's not what you want out of the book, this is not for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very clear and informative.

I enjoyed this book and it will come in handy when it comes time for my kids to look into college. It was very clearly written and very informative. All the different examples of homeschoolers lives and how to get into college with that was great! I especially enjoyed the comparison of the public schooled college application to the unschoolers application and realizing how "boring" the public school college applications seemed! Helps solidify my decisions to homeschool my children!

More Asian parents should read this book. There is too much obsession with getting into the right schools, even from the early age of two. Children are suffering as a result.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly thoughtful

While I can't stand the term "unschooling," this book lays out a viable plan of attack for any parent wishing to start their child on path to college without the hopelessly outdated, 35-hour per week, sitting in class, rite of passage that most American teens endure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for unschoolers

I unschool and was interested in college- this book was immensely helpful in pointing me in the right direction. Highly recommend it to any unschooler/homeschooler who wants to figure out the application process and how our unique experiences can set us apart.
