About this item:

Secret Codes - Lost Landmarks - Hidden Clues - Real Locations

Before Jake’s grandfather died, he was on the trail of a centuries-old mystery. And he has entrusted that mystery to Jake, leaving behind a set of hidden codes, riddles, maps, and other clues that lead Jake and his friends on a scavenger hunt into the heart of Colorado’s wild and rugged Rocky Mountain National Park.

Through twists and turns, the mystery unfolds while Jake, Amber, and Wes learn about survival skills, natural history, integrity, character, and friendship.

While camping in Rocky Mountain National Park, they discover they are not the only ones on this quest. An elusive shadow group is close on their heels.

"I read this book with my 2 daughters, ages 9 and 7. We are National park fanatics, and we had a blast reading this book together, especially since we just visited RMNP. We had our park map out and would look up each location mentioned in the book. My 9 year stole the book from me and stayed up late finishing it on her own!"
- Lynn Darrah, High School Special Educator and Mom

"Our 5th-grade daughter started reading the book as soon as we got it. Before I knew it she was already over halfway through. She says that she loves the scavenger hunt and the characters of the book. She has a hard time putting it down to do her chores. I love that she picks to read the book over screen time each day after school."
- Father of Two in Houston, TX

"Loved the book. Adventure, suspense, and educational! Wonderful. Can't wait for the next book in the series!"
- Grandmother to four inquisitive grandchildren in Denver, CO

"This book by far exceeded my expectations. I cannot wait to take my kids on another adventure to a National Park and read this along the way. The adventure was rich, the dialogue was natural, the places that I've been were very accurately described and those I have not been to were easy to imagine. I did not want to put the book down."
- Rockwood Area Elementary 2nd Grade Teacher, Rockwood, PA.

"My two sons and I recently received an advanced reader copy of "Mystery in Rocky Mountains" and couldn't put it down. It was fun being able to visualize some of the locations due to visiting Colorado last summer. My two boys (ages 10 and 9) really enjoy reading mysteries as well as learning about history. If your child enjoys a good laugh, a good mystery, and a book that they can't put down. Can't wait to read book 2!"

From the Author

"My hope is that both kids and adults will be captivated by the mystery and the setting of Rocky Mountain National Park. I remember the first book that hooked me when I was in 6th grade--you probably have that book, too--the one that started a life-long love for reading. One of my goals in writing Mystery in Rocky Mountain National Park was to craft that sort of book. I hope you enjoy this first installment in the series."

I bought this book to give to my granddaughter, but I wanted to read it first, and couldn’t put it down! It’s very well written, and the element of real places and real history make it extra special. I just finished it and ordered the other books in the series to continue the mystery! I am looking forward to hearing when more in the series are published. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rocky Mountain

I loved this book so much. My son is a rising 4th grader so I got it for him. I’m also a teacher so I started to read it and was hooked! This book is very well written and keeps your attention with each chapter. This would be great addition to a 5th grade library or for a higher reading group to get fluency practice and comprehension. You can also go to the website of the series and the author has a vocabulary list to go with each book to help you out with tier 2 or 3 words. Take my word get it and I bet you yourself will read it and not put it down. Also it has more information about the real places they visit in the book in the back!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Fun Book to Read for all ages!

I ordered this book for our 10 year old grandaughter. While visiting her, I read it myself and then her mother read it. We LOVED IT! Our family has been visiting the YMCA of The Rockies, outside of Estes Park CO for more than 50 years every-other summer. We loved the adventures of the children in the book as they went to the places we have visited. We delighted in their adventures. The shift in time periods from present day to the Rocky Mountain past was also great. We got to read about many of the historic mountain men we have heard so much about. Great plot, great adventure, positive character traits for kids to read. I highly recommend this book and expect all the books in the series to be as good as this one. I would encourage you to purchase this book and read along with your children. Or, treat yourself and get your own book! :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read aloud mystery

P.F. · August 15, 2023

I started reading the first three chapters to my 5th grade son, thinking that I would pass it on to him to finish, since we always have so many books I want to read aloud. I ended up reading the entire book to three of our kids. Aaron Johnson did such a fabulous job writing a book that is so natural and easy to read aloud, which is not true of many books. The story jumps between modern-day and 1880 in the Estes Park area, which gives it a time travel feel to it. I loved the relationships between the kids and between the grown-ups and kids in the story. There is respect shown both ways and the kids are given responsibility and independence. My kids (ages 6-12) were excited to sit down and hear me read the book each time, and when I asked if they wanted another chapter, they would always say yes!We have bought all three books (birthday presents for the almost 10-year-old at his request), and I am considering reading all of them out loud because it's such an interesting story and I'd like to see where it goes. I highly recommend this book. It's refreshing to have a well-written book to hand my upper elementary/middle school kids---or to read aloud to them.

Terrific book and the story line kept my interest and I’m 48 years old! but 2 pages are messed up. The ink is blurred on a number of the lines and can hardly be read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to read aloud with grandson!

J. · August 24, 2024

I purchased this for our grandson's 9th birthday. Once we started reading it was hard to put down. He loved the mysteries and trying to figure them out before we got to the end. I am now checking to be sure our library has them available. This was a fun book that gave appreciation for the outdoors and our national parks. He was reading Harry Potter books on his kindle, but put them down for our read aloud together time and we both enjoyed every page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mystery Outdoor Collection for My 9-Year Old

W.A.S. · August 19, 2023

We've read the first two of the three book series and are halfway through the third (I understand the author plans to keep going). My daughter and I are doing you-read-a-page, I-read-a-page sessions almost daily and enjoying it.For kids, this is a clever mystery series that introduces the grander of three different national parks and a decades old puzzle being tackled by three young teens who are vacationing with their families. The parks are given good description (I've been to two of the three) in a way that should interest young readers in the wonders of natural America. The mystery is plausible to young readers with enough mystery to be engaging. The author also pivots between the 1800's, when the object in question became hidden and pursued, and present day. The present day is triggered when the recently deceased grand-father of one of the three adventurers leaves him a host of clues (some of them hidden in the national parks) that he and his two companions are following in pursuit of solving the mystery. Adding to the suspense of the mystery, it seems that they are being followed by nefarious pursuers who are after the same item they seek. For adults, the writing is age appropriate, but not simplistic. I am enjoying reading this with my daughter and the story hasn't bored or become repetitive. It has a good literary flow and is well crafted. Perfect for how she and I are tackling the series.

11 year old loved it

D.M. · October 3, 2022

My 11 year old is an avid reader. We picked this up for him. He read it in a day. Said he loved it, "especially the 1880s parts." Then he said that the author was tricky because he makes it so that you "have" to buy the next book. I asked why. He said it's because each subsequent book has clues to solving the mystery. Long story short, he then asked if we could buy the next book!
