About this item:

Sleep in Heavenly Pizza is the fourth book in Mindy Quigley's delectable Deep Dish Mystery series, set in a Wisconsin pizzeria.

Pizza chef Delilah O’Leary and her kitty companion, Butterball, get into the holiday spirit as Geneva Bay, Wisconsin hosts the nation’s premier snow sculpting championship. The annual event transforms the charming resort town into a wonderland of snow castles, ice rinks, and cozy cups of cocoa.

On the eve of the festival though, a too-good-to-be-true Chrismukkah catering gig brings some frosty tidings and heralds an unexpected visit from Delilah’s high-intensity older sister. Suddenly it seems that the holidays may not be the hap-happiest season of all. And when one of the town’s snowy sculptures reveals a chilling surprise, murder threatens to put the celebrations―and Delilah’s crew―on ice for good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shocking surprise in a frozen ice sculpture block

J.P. · October 22, 2024

Living in Alaska, I've enjoyed more than a few ice sculpture competitions. After reading this book, though, I'm not quite sure I'll look at them quite the same. I mean, can you imagine sitting down to begin your creation and finding a dead body entombed in the ice block in front of you? That's the murder scenario complicating Delilah O'Leary's romance with Detective Calvin Capone this time. Yes, that Capone family. Only this time, he's one of the good guys. Delilah has learned, however, how quickly he can switch gears from the piano playing, table clearing, and fun guy into the guarded, focused detective. Knowing it and being fully able to accept that aspect are two very different things for Delilah, especially when some of the evidence seems to point directly at a family member.I'm not even going to attempt to summarize the plot. There's simply too much going on, not all of it really related to the murder. It's almost Christmas and Delilah and Sonya are catering an upscale Chrismukkah, a combo of the two holiday seasons. Definitely money and power on display. Everything seems to be going well until, well, it isn't. Toss in family issues, being low on staff, an anxiety producing relationship with her seemingly too-perfect sister Shea, a fight with her boyfriend Calvin, and Melody's crush on the ever-so-handsome bartender and that's just the surface. Where, oh, where is Rabbit, her until now dependable worker? Will Delilah and Capone ever have a "normal" date? What is sister Shea hiding?Toss in a steady stream of red herrings as well as not easily answered questions about the murder and, well, Delilah has a lot on her plate and it isn't pizza. I loved how author Quigley handled the plot, keeping it moving along steady while filling us in on backstories and further letting us get to know the supporting cast. You're likely to wind up caring and fretting over each and every one of them, from Melody's sad discouragement over romance to Jarka and Harold's return home with big news. Jarka is one of my favs, so it was good to see her return home just in time to be of great help in more ways than one. Sonya seems to know Delilah better than Delilah knows Delilah and is helping her face some tough truths, too, as she tries to deal with her attitude toward Capone, keep her business going, and sort out her relationship with her sister.....all while involved in figuring out whodunit.Bottom line, I adore this series. It's character driven, my favorite kind. My review doesn't do it justice but I'm trying not to give away too much. I like Delilah, especially with her caring, less judgemental side coming out, and learning that her sister isn't quite the together soul she appears. All while trying to foster holiday cheer, I might note. The fact the supporting cast is such a huge part of the book and we're getting to know them as genuine people, individuals all, is a real plus. And, oh, my the food talk. Don't read this book on an empty stomach. Delilah's cat Butterball, as always, provides some laughs. Thanks #StMartinsPress - #MinotaurBooks for allowing me to drop in early on Delilah and the gang. As always, while the murder scene gave me shivers, I enjoyed it and am already looking forward to my next visit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall entertaining mystery with a great ending

Delilah "Dee" O'Leary owns an upscale pizzeria in Geneva Bay, Wisconsin. She runs it with her best friend, Sonya, and the two are catering a "Chrismukkah" event - a party to celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah. There are a few snags, but overall the event goes well - until a woman who had gone missing from the party is found dead in a pile of snow where a snow sculpting competition is being held. This is the fifth book in the "cozyish" Deep Dish Mystery series. I've read most of them, but think this would work well as a standalone. My favorite part of the book is the actual event and the descriptions of the dishes being served. (Recipes for a couple of them can be found at the end of the book.) I could picture myself at the party and loved that both Christmas and Hanukkah foods were included. I also enjoy the friendship between Dee and Sonya and how their personalities complement each other. There was a little too much O'Leary family drama in this one. The parts that were tied in with the investigation were fine, but much of it wasn't and made it hard to like some of the characters. Dee is a capable investigator, but sometimes needs to take it down a notch. I think even she realized that showing up at an active crime scene to talk to her detective boyfriend about the case was the wrong thing to do. The case held my interest throughout the book, but when all the details were revealed, I was somewhat disappointed. The overall ending of this book, however, was touching and hopeful for Dee, her family, and her friends.Thank you to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for providing the advance review copy of this ebook. 5.0 out of 5 stars Sensational Characters

L.C. · October 22, 2024

Dollycas’s ThoughtsWe arrive in Geneva Bay, Wisconsin just in time for the holidays. The nation’s premier snow sculpting championship is set to begin soon and the town will become a winter wonderland of ice and snow sculptures. Pizza chef Delilah O’Leary caters a Chrismukkah event for Daffi and Adrian Hoffman the evening before and is surprised to see her niece and brother-in-law in attendance without her sister. The surprises don’t end with the party, the next day one of the sculptors makes a terrifying discovery. It appears murder is on the menu and Delilah’s crew and family will be getting more than a slice of attention. Can Delilah and her feline friend Butterball put the clues together to serve up the real killer before anyone else gets iced?Ms. Quigley has created a sensational set of core characters for this series. I related to Aunt Biz and her longing for a family holiday. It is hard to get everyone together these days. At first Delilah’s sister, Shea was not coming for Christmas but circumstances in the story brought her and her family to town. While they were all together at times you could cut the tension with a knife. Delilah feels so true to life. The woman has a huge heart. As this series continues, the supporting characters become more fleshed out too. It is easy to get invested in their lives. The way the murder takes place and the aftermath was really freaky. Capone wants Delilah to stay out of the investigation. He wants to protect her, but she looks out for all her friends and family no matter what. The murder is linked to the Chrismukkah party and there is no shortage of suspects, including some dear to Delilah. Connections and interactions pared them down but people she cares about are still being questioned. As clues started to come together and motives and misdeeds were revealed epic twists had me reeling. The reveal had me gobsmacked and a little heartbroken. While some heavy topics were themes in the mystery, Ms. Quigley adds a perfect amount of humor. She also mentions Wisconsin traditions and happenings that always make this Wisconsin girl smile. Delilah mentions a previous Christmas when she flopped on the couch to “watch the Bears get clobbered by the Packers”. Yes, a very enjoyable part of every Packer football season. They are two of the oldest teams in the NFL and have been rivals since 1921. Also, a Wisconsin winter is not for the faint at heart. There can be snow and frigid temps that need to be taken seriously especially when trying to solve a murder.Sleep in Heavenly Pizza was wonderfully plotted and written. Delilah, her friends, and her family had a heck of a holiday season. I loved tagging along for every minute of it.I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to Minotaur Books and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
