5.0 out of 5 stars Good book for tween readers.

11 yr-old tween doesn't like reading much, but enjoys this author, and this book in particular. Realistic. History is well-researched, which is great because incorrect details are a turn-off for readers of any age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book.

(by the way this is Melissa's son) Loved the book, the story was about as beautiful as the story for Battlefield 3's campaign. If you liked this book, check out Resist, also by Gratz. It follows Samira more.

My son selected this book to read with his school instructional support as a means to mimic a high cap program. My son likes to read books on this topic, which I find a little depressing and a little dark...but listening to the thought provoking conversations that tutor and student had over ZOOM....this is highly recommended. I did not read the book, but both tutor and student enjoyed reading it. They were a little sad to move to another book. The conversations that I overhead did a wonderful job of providing historical references (which I find lacking in his schooling so far), portraying how the characters FELT, what motivated them, and in general connecting my son to a world far bigger than greater than within our Covid quarantined city. Not sure how much of this wonderful learning experience was based on the talent and experience of the tutor, but ALLIES provided content that was educational, emotional and allowed the tutor to delve deeper, connect ideas, draw inferences and start predicting outcomes. She was trying to teach him to immerse himself in the reading....not just reading for a reading log. This was a very successful 'book club' for my son.

Good story

Bought this for my 14yr old son to try to encourage reading. He said he's really enjoying the story and was animated talking about it.

Page turner

Y. · October 30, 2022

I haven’t actually read this but giving it 5 stars for my just turned 12 year old who loved this book! Have been trying to get him to read independently for so long but couldn’t find anything he could get into until I came across this. It’s the first novel he’s read alone and he flew through it, begging to stay up a little later for just one more chapter every night.

Gripping

M.B. · August 8, 2020

Very gripping. Gifted it to a 12 year old grandson. He and his 14 year old brother loved it. I found some of it too gory.

My son's favorite author!

D.C. · October 25, 2021

"This book was very well written and I really like Alan Gratz." My son asked for this book specifically to do his most recent book report on. He loves this author and has asked us to get him "Ground Zero" for Christmas. It's not easy to get kids excited about reading actual books with the ease of access to "entertainment". That's speaks volumes to have a young person request new books and look forward to reading and re-reading them

Great read
