5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic mystery story
I really enjoyed the story and it is a well-written, age-appropriate teen mystery for my tween readers. A great addition to my classroom library.
5.0 out of 5 stars A BLOCKBUSTER!!!
I have been following Alyson’s work for a few years after borrowing Braced from my local library, so I was eagerly awaiting this book and to say that it didn’t disappoint is an understatement!! I finished the book in two sittings! I was captivated from the moment I started it. I never could have guessed all the twists and turns. This is MUST READ. I can’t wait for more!!!
4.0 out of 5 stars Fast and fun middle grade mystery
I flew through this middle grade mystery on audio in two days, starting out mildly entertained and ending up really pleasantly surprised. This is one of those stories that is completely unbelievable (pitched as Inheritance Games for MG, which fits) set at an elite private middle school in Boston and featuring a lot of privileged kids and families that are out of touch with reality. However, I ended up really liking the different spin on it; there was a lot of character growth and opportunity for friendships to blossom and second chances for multiple reasons. Plus there’s a secret society with rhyming clues for initiation and a sailing plot line that was so fun. The kids are all 12 and in 7th grade and it felt like a really authentic middle grade novel.Without ever being heavy handed this book managed to touch on themes of prejudice, honesty, integrity, and family secrets, as well as environmental and business ethics. The plot had a few thin places for me as an adult reader, but everything else pulls the story along that by the end I didn’t care and middle grade readers will love the fast paced plot. Plus there’s a great setup for a sequel. The audio was really fun because the book is told from both the female and male main characters’ perspectives, and the narrator changed based on the perspective.Recommended for 8+ and a great family audio option!
5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn’t put it down!
This is a must-read! My 8-year-daughter and I loved reading this book together. It’s so great finding a book we both enjoy. We also loved the author’s other three books and appreciated how this book is a mystery and such a fun departure! We hear there is this first book in a series that’s yet to come and we can’t wait for book #2!
5.0 out of 5 stars MUST READ!!
An edge-of-your-seat mystery with so much commercial appeal that will keep you guessing until the very end. This book is also a really fun game that will engage reluctant readers and thrill kids who read everything. Told from two perspectives—Jack and Weatherby—this story is great for kids 8 to 14 as well as their parents and teachers. Must read.
5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting Thriller!
"Liars Society" is a gripping psychological thriller filled with twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end. Highly recommended for fans of the genre!
3.0 out of 5 stars Fun MG mystery
This book absolutely is in the vein of The Westing Game or The Inheritance Games (it also reminded me of a lesser-known MG novel called The Ambrose Deception), but something about this story kept me as a reader from really connecting with the story or characters. I almost felt as if I were being kept at arm’s length, which makes sense because it’s a mystery, but it also felt frustrating because the characters felt somewhat under-developed.The story centers around a fancy Boston prep school complete with a secret society, and both of the main characters, Weatherby and Jack, are on the sailing team. The story goes back and forth between their two points of view as they struggle for the top spots in the team, and to be accepted both at home and at school by who they truly are. I’ll be honest - I had a hard time imagining many of the scenes that take place in this book, because they are so far removed from my school experiences either as a student or teacher. Then again, I’ve never been to a magical school but was able to imagine that perfectly (long before HP movies came along) due to superior writing.I did enjoy this mystery, but I just needed a little more connection to the story, and it just wasn’t there for me. I did think the clues were extremely well done, and the book sets itself up perfectly for a series. It’s entertaining and will appeal to a niche group of readers, but I don’t see it being a huge hit at my school library.
5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for kids and adults!!
I can’t put this book down! It’s so fun and engaging you hardly notice all the wonderful life lessons and vocab words your child will be picking up. I’m buying it as a gift for every middle grade reader I know. I hear there’s a sequel, I can’t wait!!
