"Bebe Moore Campbell shatters our abstract notions about mental illness. . . . [She] is a writer at the top of her form as a storyteller, culture keeper and astute social critic." –Los Angeles Times“A tightly woven, well-written story about mothers and daughters, highs and lows, ex-husbands and boyfriends, and how a ‘perfect’ life can be completely altered by something entirely beyond our control. . . . Campbell fearlessly unveils the pain of loss and the ecstasy of love. Add to that courage, and the graceful ability to write very, very well.” –Maya Angelou

This book was so relatable. It was very interesting to read about something that many people are afraid to discuss. Mental illness is taboo in some communities and I’m so glad she touched on the subject. Phenomenal!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mother's Devotion Is Priceless

B.O.A. · February 3, 2007

The January/February 2007 edition of The Crisis has a fitting tribute to Bebe Moore Campbell, whose novels make her without a doubt one of the best American writers ever. Her characters are real; a family member, neighbor, co-worker or person who lives a couple blocks over. These are people with concerns, opinions and solutions to tangible problems. When reading a Moore Campbell novel, you see yourself somewhere in her prose. And in 72 Hour Hold, it is a mother's love that will ultimately rescue her child.Keri Whitmore owns an upscale Los Angeles resale clothing shop and is building a new personal life for herself & her daughter, Trina, who has the world in front of her due to her outstanding high school grades. But Trina begins to show outward signs of some sort of illness and she is diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The reader is then sent on the rocky highway of the mental health and medical insurance systems, along with the stigmas attached to a family when someone is diagnosed with mental illness, that challenges Keri Whitmore on many levels. There is the ex-husband who refuses to acknowledge that his daughter has a mental illness, a boyfriend who is confronting the fact that his son is gay and the seemingly endless hurdles in balancing the needs of the business with the growing medical needs of her daughter. The closing scene brings all the human elements together and proves again that nothing can overwhelm a mother's true devotion to her child. The extraordinary writing genius of Moore Campbell will live forever not only through her words, but - importantly - because readers can relate to the actions of the characters on a very personal level.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read!

So glad I purchased this book. Arrived in pristine condition. This was a great read. Fiction novel but the author wrote from real life experiences. The world of mental illness is often swept under a rug and rarely talked about even though so many suffer from this disease. It was truely eye opening to see what a struggle the illness is not only on the patient but even more so for the caregiver and family of those who suffer. It exposes the many holes and flaws in our mental health care system and the sheer desperation of those who need assistance for there loved ones in crisis. Heartbreaking yet educational.

Bebe crafts an amazing story of the journey that Keri goes through with her daughter that suffers from bi-polar disorder. Keri jumps through hoops to get her daughter the assistance that she needs. Desperate times calls for desperate measures. Often it takes failure after failure to get to the desired result.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for those trying to deal with a loved one who has a mental illness.

The author tells a real and raw story of the struggles of dealing with a child who is bipolar and won’t consistently take her medication. Dealing with the bureaucracy, the financial hardship and the limited options for those who have to care for a mentally ill family member is daunting and can lead to desperate measures being taken, as she described. While she can at times come across as trying too hard to be cleaver in her writing, her story rings true about dealing with the balance of caring for a mentally ill loved one, while trying to care for yourself and live your life. Great story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story, shedding light on dealing with the mentally ill.

This was a very interesting story, and I appreciate the way that it shed so much light the way families and loved ones deal with the mentally ill. Keri's struggle was truly understandably and captivating -- Keri had a hard time accepting the fact that her daughter Trina may not return to the way Trina was pre-bi-polar disorder diagnosis. I could imagine her pain and her all-too-human reactions to her daughters struggle. On the downside, I don't think we get to understand as much of what the struggle was really like for Trina -- her emotional journal wasn't was palpable. And there were a lot of interesting threads in the story that were never fully tied up. For example, Keri's gifted hands as a masseuse, the struggle of Keri's former assistant at her boutique, Adriana, and finally, whether Keri truly reunited with her own mother. But overall the book was well written and very interesting. And somehow, it wasn't depressing.
