About this item:
The entries are written in accessible language and guide readers in what they should know, tell, ask, and understand. The drugs are arranged in alphabetical order by generic name. Each entry is accompanied by one or two photographs showing such things as the pill size, shape, color, markings, or packaging for common brands. Information is clearly laid out in the form of eight questions covering what each drug is for; what to tell health-care providers before taking the drug; how to take the drug; what to do if a dose is missed; how the drug interacts with other prescription, nonprescription, and illicit drugs as well as foods, beverages, and dietary supplements; what to watch for when taking the drug; what side effects are possible; and how the drug should be stored. The advice on side effects is straightforward and concrete. The layout and descriptions are far more understandable and useful for the layperson than the professionally oriented PDR with its scientific vocabulary and instructions for doctors. The "How to Use This Book" section is an important feature, carefully explaining how entries are formatted and what information they provide. Two indexes, "Disease and Disorder Index" and "Index of Generic and Brand-Name Drugs," round out the book.
This volume is highly recommended and should be available in every public library branch in all communities across the country. It is well written and has current information (as of 2005), including a caution on Vioxx and instructions on the return of unused pills. Because drug knowledge is forever changing, the AARP and Gold Standard would do well to create new editions or updates on a regular basis. Linda Loos Scarth

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and easy to read book.
One of the best medicine guides I have ever purchased. More up to date than most and easy to find whatever you're looking for.Good explanations on pros and cons of on each drug and helps one to make better choices. I looked up a drug that had beenrecommend to me by a doctor and the possible side effects scared me enough that I refused to take it. When I asked a seconddoctor his opinion, he said the drug was okay, but said the first doctor was starting me on a dose 4's too high for my size andage.
3.0 out of 5 stars Gosh, I'm Disappointed!
For what it has, it has lots of easy-to-read information that is indeed useful. However, it only has information on about 1200 medications. Now, that sounds like a lot, but I guess it really isn't. The book doesn't cover a widely-used medication I take: Advair, probably the most prescribed Asthma medication in the USA for several years, is not here. Nor are its component parts. True, Advair is an inhaler and not a pill, but they do cover sinus sprays. Beats me! As for the elderly, the print is too small for most older folks, I believe. I have been using the Winter Griffith books and I guess I'll be going back to them next time. They are written in outline/list form and not complete sentences, but they seem to cover more. And that, essentially, is your decision: Do you want complete sentences, pretty layout but small print and not full coverage; or lists, ugly layout, big print, and more complete coverage? Your call.
5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A VERY THOROUGH BOOK COVERING MEDICATION & DISEASES THAT THEY TREAT
THIS BOOK IS 978 PAGES LONG. IT HAS REFERENCES IN THE BACK THAT GIVE THE DISEASE OR MEDICAL PROBLEM & WHICH MEDICATION IS APPROPIATE FOR THIS. I AM GLAD THAT I CHOSE TO PURCHASE THIS BOOK. IT WILL BE A GREAT REFERENCE FOR ME WHEN I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT MY MEDICATIONS, SIDE EFFECTS, ETC. IT WAS WELL WORTH THE MONEY PAID FOR IT & WILL BE WELL USED FOR YEARS TO COME.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great reference book
My dad asked me to order this for him after looking at one at the senior center. He was very impressed with how information is presented and the level of detail. Great reference book, however, it doesn't really have any information about vitamins or other supplements, e.g., Vitamin E, Fish Oil (Omega 3), etc.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excelent Investment
I am extremely satisfied with my book. It is informative and with the description, etc. of each drug, there is a color photo. It also indicates what medications can cause interactions with your drug. Extremely good investment. I also purchased one for my mother who looked up all of her present medications. :-)
