Putting the Science in Fiction: Expert Advice for Writing with Authenticity in Science Fiction, Fantasy, & Other Genres

Description:

About this item:

Science and technology have starring roles in a wide range of genres--science fiction, fantasy, thriller, mystery, and more. Unfortunately, many depictions of technical subjects in literature, film, and television are pure fiction. A basic understanding of biology, physics, engineering, and medicine will help you create more realistic stories that satisfy discerning readers.

This book brings together scientists, physicians, engineers, and other experts to help you:

   • Understand the basic principles of science, technology, and medicine that are frequently featured in fiction.
   • Avoid common pitfalls and misconceptions to ensure technical accuracy.
   • Write realistic and compelling scientific elements that will captivate readers.
   • Brainstorm and develop new science- and technology-based story ideas.
Whether writing about mutant monsters, rogue viruses, giant spaceships, or even murders and espionage,
Putting the Science in Fiction will have something to help every writer craft better fiction.

Putting the Science in Fiction collects articles from "Science in Sci-fi, Fact in Fantasy," Dan Koboldt's popular blog series for authors and fans of speculative fiction (dankoboldt.com/science-in-scifi). Each article discusses an element of sci-fi or fantasy with an expert in that field. Scientists, engineers, medical professionals, and others share their insights in order to debunk the myths, correct the misconceptions, and offer advice on getting the details right.

"This book is a collection of blog posts by Dan Koboldt, who has been feeding writers excellent scientific information for a long time... Every writer should have a copy on his or her bookshelf." --Seattle Book Review, 5-star review

5.0 out of 5 stars important science and technology facts for writers

c. · November 1, 2018

Although I am not a writer of science fiction I do write non-fiction. This book is important for writers of all genres to read and also for anyone interested in understanding science and technology in all types of media. The book is an impressive collection of experts in many different fields such as astronomy, biology, ecology, videogame production and animation, medicine, psychiatry to name a few represented in this book. The experts discuss how science and technology is often misunderstood by writers or by movies and facts are often ignored or distorted. The experts give solid examples of such cases. They also give credit when scientific facts are used in a credible manner whether in a book or a movie. I loved the informal style of the contributors and as a non-scientific person appreciated the use of clear understandable language without use of jargon. It helped that there was a wide array of fields represented and that the chapters were concise and to the point. I loved reading this book and have no hesitation in recommending it highly. Kudos to the editor for thinking of this much needed and timely topic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource

I'm an aspiring writer and am always looking for ways to improve my writing or make my writing more realistic and this book caught my eye. I got it and spent two hours going through it. I liked that it had specific examples from well known books and movies. It covers a wide range of topics. Has lots of great information in it. If you're writing science fiction (or even some high fantasy) this is definitely worth having.

4.0 out of 5 stars Broad, not deep

In general, I thought this was a very good book. It has multiple authors, each addressing some basic "things you should know." The authors hit the high points, and (a big plus) give references for learning more about each subject. Naturally, the articles vary in quality. I particularly liked the section on gravity, which gave some really nice shortcuts for avoiding complex calculations. Conversely, the section on wolves was largely a complaint about how they are treated in fiction, rather than making positive suggestions about how they should be portrayed. It shouldn't need to be said, but--you don't have to be an author to enjoy this book.

This book covers so much. The contributors explained in an understanding way so you don't get lost in the jargon, wow, the number of story ideas - well, I'll just say I'm set for years.

Lots of good information in this book, hopefully improve my writing by studying it all. It's a bit hard to read, the print is so small, but I'll manage. Can't say anything really bad about the book, just have old eyes. :\

I really liked the fact that the book expressed different points of view on several of the same themes. I learned a lot and will be going back through this book several times. Great resource and great read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great writing reference

If you are interested in writing SciFi but aren't that versed in science or don't want to write something that couldn't possibly be 'realisitic', you'll want to add this book to your reference library. It is a fun and informative read even if you aren't a writer. The author has gathered a collection of experts from biology, astronomy, rocket science, toxicology, biomedicine, etc.... The stories are written in friendly, sometimes humourous tones that make the reader feel like they are at the world's best dinner party, listening to everyones story. A fantastic book!

Excellent

Perfect

A great reference for any writer

I subscribe to Dan Koboldt’s newsletter and refer to his site as a resource for research. When I learned that he was putting some of the essays from his site into a book, I had to buy it. Now I have a great reference on my shelf which is a starting point for research. The book is divided into sections that cover biomedical topics, including death, genetics (Koboldt’s specialization), neuroscience, wildlife biology, artificial intelligence and other computer-based technology, Earth and the planets of our solar system, astronomy and space flight, and, finally, the future of space travel and exoplanets.Chuck Wendig writes the foreword, on the advice to write what you know and what it really means (do your research). In his signature playful tone, Wendig clarifies the advice and demonstrates how he’s applied it in his own writing life, finishing by calling Putting the Science in Fiction a great launching pad for essential research. The contributors themselves write with humour—find out why, as a woman working in a lab, you should never wear thong underwear—and draw on their personal expertise for an enjoyable read. In the chapters addressing space travel, they reveal their geek roots, honouring the books, television shows, and movies that inspired them while at the same time pointing out the technical misconceptions such media sometimes promote.Putting the Science in Fiction is a great reference for any writer’s shelf.
