About this item:
“If you want to train for road races with equal parts ambition and intelligence, this is your book.”
Scott Douglas-- Senior Content Editor, Runner’s World
“Serious runners have been relying on Pete Pfitzinger since the 1990s for practical training and racing advice. In Faster Road Racing, Pfitzinger and Phil Latter draw on science, elite examples, and personal experiences as runners and coaches to provide everything runners need to take their racing to a new level.”
Jonathan Beverly-- Editor in Chief, Running Times
Pete Pfitzinger, the top American finisher in the 1984 and 1988 Olympic marathons, is a respected coach, exercise physiologist, and administrator of high-performance sport. He established himself as one of the best marathoners in U.S. history by outkicking Alberto Salazar to win the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials. That same year he received the DeCelle Award for America’s best distance runner and was named Runner of the Year by the Road Runners Club of America. He is also a two-time winner of the San Francisco Marathon and finished third in the 1987 New York City Marathon. He is a member of the Road Runners Club of America’s Hall of Fame.
Although best known as a marathoner, Pfitzinger was highly successful at shorter distances with personal bests of 22:46 for 5 miles, 28:41 for 10K, 43:37 for 15K, and 1:03:14 for the half marathon. He won national championships at 15K and 30K and held the American record for 20 miles. As a coach, Pfitzinger has more than 30 years’ experience helping runners achieve their personal goals, whether it’s completing their first 5K or competing with distinction on the world stage. He is currently responsible for coaching, athlete development, and performance planning as a general manager for High Performance Sport New Zealand, supporting over 400 Olympic-level and emerging international athletes.
Pfitzinger is also a successful author, having written Road Racing for Serious Runners (1998), Advanced Marathoning (2001), and Advanced Marathoning, Second Edition (2009), all from Human Kinetics. He was a senior writer for Running Times from 1997 to 2008 and author of the magazine’s most popular column, “The Pfitzinger Lab Report.”
Pfitzinger is a graduate of Cornell University (BSc, MBA) and the University of Massachusetts (MSc exercise science). He and his wife, New Zealand track Olympian Christine Pfitzinger, live in New Zealand with their two daughters, Annika and Katrina.
Philip Latter is a senior writer for Running Times and the head cross country coach at Swain County High School in North Carolina. He has also been the head cross country coach at Radford University in Virginia and the lead assistant at Fort Collins High School in Colorado, where he helped guide the Lambkins to three Nike Cross Nationals appearances. In addition to Running Times, his writing has appeared in Runner’s World and on RunnersWorld.com and ESPNRise.com.
A runner for more than 15 years, Latter set four school records at the University of North Carolina at Asheville and was a five-time All-Big South runner and a two-time member of the All-Academic team. He holds PRs of 4:01 (1500 meters), 8:32 (3000 meters), 14:47 (5000 meters), 31:24 (10,000 meters), and 1:12:11 (half marathon).
Latter lives in Bryson City, North Carolina, with his wife, Macy, and two daughters, Aspen and Willow. He continues to train seriously for road races of all distances, mostly on the trails of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, which sits exactly one mile from his doorstep.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... books on running and this one is an instant favorite. Easy to read and well thought out
I've read quite a few books on running and this one is an instant favorite. Easy to read and well thought out. Everything from nutrition, to stretching, to core, to weight training, to running intensities, is covered. I also really liked how the authors broke the book up so if you just want the running plans you only need read a chapter or two to get the information you need, but if you want to dive in deeper all the information is right there. Also really liked how the book has a glossary, not all running books take the extra step to do this and it sure saves time if I need to look something up.Armed with the knowledge in this book I have created my own personal heart rate zones (they also offer the option to go by time per race performance, but I think the heart rate provides a more customized workout) and began creating customized workouts in Garmin Connect based off of the plans in this book.I will follow up after the season and relate my experiences.
5.0 out of 5 stars Best running book I’ve found
This book is by far the most informative book I’ve read. It is well written and gives the reader the knowledge of why running in certain zones is important to the body. It touches on things such heart rate zones, pace, recovery, nutrition, base training programs, and training programs. Highly recommended. You won’t be disappointed.
4.0 out of 5 stars When was this originally written?
The photos seem old and the original copyright date says 1957! A lot has changed since then. Has it been updated to reflect changes in thought?
5.0 out of 5 stars Came for the training program, stayed for the other helpful advice
I've run a couple of half marathons using Hal Higdon's programs available online. The consensus seemed to be that Higdon's programs were good for getting you to the finish line but not for maximizing your performance. Pfitzinger was most commonly recommended as a guy whose programs would get your times down considerably, and when I tried to find his programs online, I instead found this book. I bought it almost entirely for the program, but the rest of the book was actually very good. I read it cover-to-cover in a single sitting and found helpful advice on diet, strength training, and recovery. As such, I got a lot more out of it than I really expected, making me a very satisfied customer. The real test, of course, will be seeing what I run in my next half.

This book is a very easy read. It does well to break down the various systems and how you might target them specifically for a particular distance. I have already found myself using this as a bit of a reference guide as I establish new goals for different distances.Something of particular note is the book's reference to downhill running. While the book doesn't dig very deep on running downhill, it does well to caution runners about dowhill running and injuries. This helped me to connect the dots on why some of my more downhill runs turned into a slugfest of exhaustion and at times, pain.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for intermediate to advanced runners
Loving this book. Self-coaching myself in return to running after over a decade of doing nothing physical. Eased back in with a Galloway plan, then stalled. Over the years I’ve read Daniel’s, Magnass, Noakes, the Glovers works. Faster Road Racing and the plans fit my physiology and psychology better than any of the others. My times are dropping across the board and, critically, I’ve had no injuries or setbacks. YMMV, but for me this has been ideal.
5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just for the Elite
While this book is intended for "serious" runners, it's also an excellent resource for those of us who might be a little less serious about the sport. Although I've only done a couple of 5K races, I found a lot of the information very relevant: the chapter on nutrition was enlightening and all the pictures in the supplementary training section were very helpful. And finally, I loved all the write-ups on the different runners--they were a nice personal touch, well-written, and inspiring. Thanks to Pete Pfitzinger and Philip Latter for getting me motivated

Great training plans to set a PR!
Fundamental
Great training book
Pfitzinger is one of the best coaches around and this book has fantastic training advice and some great plans for anyone looking to improve their 5k to Half Marathon times
Run faster and avoid injury
I bought this after completing 2hr 45 first marathon following Petes marathon plan book and recently took 30 secs off my 16:30 5K time. What I love about it is that earlier chapters equip you with why you do certain workouts whilst maintaining a strict recovery schedule which you easily adapt around normal life. The training plans are manageable with adjustable mileage to suit your current training level. I feel the benefits of these plans deep into races when things start to get hard and can clearly see the difference they've made.
