Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life...And Maybe the World

Description:

About this item:

Based on a Navy SEAL's inspiring graduation speech, this #1 New York Times bestseller of powerful life lessons "should be read by every leader in America" (Wall Street Journal).

If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.

On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better.

Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve
more, even in life's darkest moments.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Should be read by every leader in America... [MAKE YOUR BED] is a book to inspire your children and grandchildren to become everything that they can. It is a book to discuss with your executive leadership team as a spur to meeting shared goals. Most of all, it is a book that will leave you with tears in your eyes."―Wall Street Journal

"Full of captivating personal anecdotes from inside the national security vault...McRaven's lessons, like his commencement speech, extend far beyond his bed-making. He devotes the 10-chapter book to lessons about moving beyond failure, standing up to bullies and giving others hope."―
Washington Post

"McRaven...has taken the genesis of what he learned during SEAL training and his nearly four decades in Navy Special Operations into a thin, powerful book."―
USA Today

"Exquisitely simple...superb, smart, and succinct ideas."―

Bought this as a gift for a child who needed encouragement to get through a long day with work. The simple messages encourage you to stay organized, and do the small things that help relax, encourage you, and feel more positivity by accomplishing the little things in life. Highly recommend!

I have gifted this book to quite a few family and friends. Plain speaking, to the point, well written, and great advice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short, easy read

K.C. · March 27, 2024

This is a very easy, short read. It is quite clear that the author led a full life, but the book is not terribly profound. It is a collection of short stories about the Navy. I was expecting something mind-blowing, reading the reviews. It'd be a nice gift for someone thinking of entering the Navy. Personally, I'd run the other way. You have to really love your country to go through all that. Kudos to those who do.

This book is such a great gift. I bought it on sale for my nephew's graduation but I continue to recommend it to all my friends and neighbors, especially those with kids. There are so many words of wisdom about life, grit, determination, respect, and honor... Ideals and lessons often lost and/or missing from our world today. The audio version is also fantastic, delivering these impactful stories/messages in the author's own words and inclination. I also bought the children's version of this book for my nephew. In the event he wasn't interested in reading it, I could just leave him with a few key lessons from Admiral McRaven. You won't regret purchasing this book!

They work really hard to teach, mentor, discipline, and help guide kids to be better citizens and well rounded human beings!

Hi, I am Abhimanyu from the Republic of India, This book is based on practical facts, nothing fictitious written in this Book. One of the most decorated officers of the US Army wrote this Book. It's like cream out of Milk. I like the way Sir McRaven depicted the true facts of his SEAL training days. If I applied properly the knowledge I gathered from this Book I can overcome any obstacle in my life & thrive towards perfection. I strongly recommend this book for everyone especially those who are mentally weak. It can guide you through your tough time & unleash the warrior from within your soul. I am truly honoured to share my review about this masterpiece. Thank You all ladies & gentlemen.
