If you’re interested in the history of Britain, I highly recommend this book. Fantastic photos with concise descriptions of the history of the British Isles starting from the earliest human settlements up to current times. This is a treasure to explore as briefly or thoroughly as you like as the chapters are arranged chronologically.

I could stare at each page! So much information, pictures, things to learn about. The book is a good size! Great for kids who love to look at the pages of books like I did when I was a kid. DK is stellar at creating publications that one can just absorb the knowledge. One of the best books I have in terms of detail and information about the UK.

Great book, I have just started reading. The only problem is that the font size is too small.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book….teeny, tiny print makes it hard to read.

Like everyone else who purchased this book, I concur it is a very beautiful thing. But I bought it because I am FINALLY going to Ireland and England this fall and wanted an overview of the history of these two countries. But like at least one other reviewer on Bolo, I am getting on in years. I have excellent reading glasses that have always sufficed my needs in the past, but for heavens sake, this type size is for mice. In addition, the history section is in a lighter color and the layout of the text does not help make this an easy read. It is also oversized which makes it difficult to hold and read. Best to lay it down on a table. That said, the content is very good. The level of information is deep enough to get a full understanding of what happened but not so much that you are drowning in details. The color and B&W photos are wonderful…truly a joy to flip through from page to page. And while I do not regret buying this book, had I known how unwieldy it is to pick and read, plus the type issues, I most likely would have purchased another book.

Better than expected. Pages re very soft and the most important: the content is very good a well. The images are very good, and the book is well- written and clear, without mistakes. It has the most important dates and facts of UK. A very good option to learn/ revise/ outline UK's history

Brilliant Summary of our History

T. · April 29, 2014

An absolutely brilliant book I have to say. I’d already read Jeremy Black’s, ‘History of the British Isles’ which I found quite hard going, especially the early years, where there were so many changes going on . It was hardly a fascinating or enjoyable read, more a compilation of facts. This book is totally different with its wonderful illustrations and paintings adding brilliantly to the written piece. – I really enjoyed reading this and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants an ‘overview’ of our very colourful history. It is laid out chronologically and very easy to follow.Yes, there’s a lot to get through, but there’s going to be isn’t there in over 2,000 years of history!Of course a book of this size and subject matter can only give a brief summary of events but it will encourage you to explore further certain subjects, perhaps you’d like to read more on the Romans, the Vikings, the Victorians or the Georgian Periods? It has certainly encouraged me to buy a few more books to learn even more.Having also read ‘DK’s ‘book on the ‘American Civil War ‘ I really do feel these titles cannot be beat for value, ease of reading and reading enjoyment. They are not the ultimate book on the subject as you’d need 100 volumes and 30,000 pages, but if like me, you’d like to have a decent overview on most of our history but do not want to read every last detail then this book is just perfect.
