Description:

About this item:

The bestselling author of Twenty Years Later delivers a chilling thriller where nothing is at it seems and each reveal is more shocking than the last…right up to the jaw-dropping final twist.

“A gripping thriller that will blow readers away." –Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author on Don’t Believe It

“A superb storyteller.” —Robert Dugoni, New York Times bestselling author

Two abducted girls—one who returns, one who doesn't.

The night they go missing, high school seniors Nicole Cutty and Megan McDonald are at a beach party in their small town of Emerson Bay, North Carolina. Police launch a massive search, but hope is almost lost--until Megan escapes from a bunker deep in the woods...A year later, the bestselling account of her ordeal has made Megan a celebrity. It's a triumphant story, except for one inconvenient detail: Nicole is still missing.

Nicole's older sister, Livia, a fellow in forensic pathology, expects that one day soon Nicole's body will be found and her sister's fate determined. Instead, the first clue comes from another body--that of a young man connected to Nicole's past. Livia reaches out to Megan to learn more about that fateful night. Other girls have disappeared, and she's increasingly sure the cases are connected.

Megan knows more than she revealed in her book. Flashes of memory are pointing to something more monstrous than she described. And the deeper she and Livia dig, the more they realize that sometimes true terror lies in finding exactly what you've been looking for...

4.0 out of 5 stars Love thrillers

I recently finished reading "The Girl Who Was Taken," and overall, I found it to be a gripping and engaging read. The narrative pulls you in from the very beginning, weaving a compelling tale of mystery and suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters are well-developed, particularly the protagonist, whose journey through trauma and recovery is both poignant and relatable. The book does an excellent job of exploring themes of resilience, the impact of trauma, and the complexity of relationships. The author’s ability to create tension and evoke emotions really stood out to me, making it hard to put the book down. However, I must admit that I was disappointed with the ending. It felt rushed and left me with too many unanswered questions. Specifically, the fate of Nicole felt unresolved, and I found myself wondering about the circumstances surrounding her death. The abrupt conclusion detracted from the overall experience for me, as I was hoping for a more thorough resolution to the story's intricacies.Despite my feelings about the ending, I still enjoyed the book and would recommend it to others who appreciate suspenseful thrillers. Just be prepared for an ending that may leave you pondering the details long after you've turned the last page.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story, hated the ending

M. · January 18, 2025

Although I did like this book, it really takes you on a “who done it” type of ride, I hated the ending! It just, like, ended. It was so unsatisfying. It was like opening a door and finding a wall. It left a MILLION answers unanswered! The ending made me feel like the book was not complete. Like there is a Volume 2 I don’t know about. Nonetheless it’s still a good story. It’s just a good story with an unsatisfying ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars It was okay

3⭐️Really interesting read with different hints so the reader has multiple suspects. I suspected some of the twists but was surprised by the final twist which is always nice to experience.Honestly I hated the ending. It was so abrupt, and for all the detail (and sometimes unnecessary scenes and events in the book) I wish more thought had been put to the ending. It was a fun true crime type of book and while it wasn’t realistic, because some of the actions of the MCs were definitely not legal and wouldn’t have stood up in a court case, it was still fun to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harrowing

This story grabs you at the start and doesn't let go. Great use of red herrings! I focused on the wrong culprit for quite a while. The writing is clean and there were only a couple of missed wrong words. This well crafted thriller is a great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a read!

Great ending too! A must-read for thriller fans.

Da morte para vida

N.R. · December 20, 2021

brilliant

Raced through this book - really enjoyed the story. So many red herrings .. never 100% sureLoved the heroine’s story .. through her guilt over her sister’s disappearance and her quest to find out what had happened to her.

is an emotional and thought-provoking exploration of trauma, resilience, and the search for justice.

M. · December 23, 2024

The Girl Who Was Taken by Charlie Donlea is a gripping psychological thriller that delves into the trauma, resilience, and uncovering of truths from the perspective of two girls: Megan McDonald, a survivor of abduction, and Nicole Cutty, who went missing the same night but never returned. While the story alternates perspectives, looking at it solely from Megan’s point of view gives an intense and emotional insight into survival and coping mechanisms after a horrifying ordeal.

Great read
