  • Become an active observer to understand what your baby is really telling you.
  • Create Montessori spaces in your home, including “yes” spaces where nothing is off-limits.
  • Set up activities that encourage baby’s movement and language development at their own pace
  • Raise a secure baby who’s ready to explore the world with confidence.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The guide is thoughtfully and beautifully laid out: block text, bulleted lists, and simple line illustrations accent the many anecdotes about babies and their living spaces from around the world. For parents interested in Montessori concepts of child development, this will be an invaluable resource” - Publisher's Weekly Starred Review

“A book that advocates a simple environment with less stuff, less fuss, and a slower speed of life.”

5.0 out of 5 stars My Montessori doulas!

The media could not be loaded. I absolutely love everything about this book. The authors are amazing guides for prospective parents (whether you’re a solo parent-to-be, a couple, adopting, or the parent of an existing child who is reading this in preparation for another child). I love how this follows Maria Montessori’s history and ideals, and is true to real Montessori roots. There are so many items that social media and shopping apps tell you that you NEED to buy, as though you’re a bad parent if you don’t purchase the most expensive AI crib, latest technology, etc. for your baby. However, simplicity helps babies to thrive and this book helps explain what kind of environment to set up to nurture our children. This book reminds us that babies deserve respect, are far more complex than we give them credit, and that they’re capable of amazing us if given the chance to express themselves and, in-turn, deserve that we observe them prior to rushing them through life. Whether you’re familiar with Montessori or want to be, the authors do a fantastic job of explaining everything. The pictures and drawings are so sweet.

I am an expecting first time mother. I don’t know much about being a parent, however, I do know that I want to teach my children independence and to have confidence in themselves and their actions. This book gives concrete applications that you can make to your life, how you interact with your child and how to set up an environment that supports child learning and independence. This book has greatly influenced the products that I will buy as a first time mom as well as how I will parent my baby once the sweet little one arrives. I am thankful for the authors who are so passionate about child education and development also for the wisdom that has been instilled in me through reading this book.

I liked the advice and wish I read this when my baby was first born. Some of it I dont agree with (like floor sleeping) but so much is relevant. I am excited to incorporate some of their advice on objects and activities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Montessori Observation

I bought this book when my baby was 1 mo old. I've read it twice and followed the suggestions to support development as i am able. We have a floor bed and I've been putting her in it for quite a few months now. My baby is now 8 mo old she cannot crawl forward yet, but she can crawl back into a sitting position. I was putting her to bed on her floor bed and she was fussy which has been normal and I've been trying to figure out why she isn't ready. Finally she rolled into her belly and slide off her bed and began to play with her rattles in a basket by her bed. I moved into her bed and laid down watching her. After a minute she reached for me, I pulled her into her bed and she drifted off to sleep on her own (no nursing no binky). I'm a new mom, my 8 mo old is my first. I'm shocked! She recognized that she was tired and reached for me on her bed when she was ready. Just like the Montessori book suggested would happen. I love this book. The drawings are simple and beautiful, the text is clear and encouraging. Love it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Get this before having your baby!

I got this after having my baby and I so wish I had it before. I am by no means a die hard Montessori mom but I wish I had read more about the simplistic approach to the baby's space. After reading this I would have had a completely different baby registry and would have loved to put the money towards simple, quality things for my baby's space instead of all of the developmentally inappropriate toys and things she will never use.

5.0 out of 5 stars A self help book that I can’t put down

This book is so beautifully written and encouraging that I found myself craving more with each page. It makes me so excited about raising my children the Montessori way. The examples and explanations on how to create a sufficient space for our babies/children helped rid my worries on if we could financially create a beautiful and independent home for our baby to explore and develop. You don’t need to be rich to raise your babies with this approach. In fact it’s more simple than we think and it takes all the pressure off us as parents. We don’t need to buy all the toys and devices for our children. Fill a bottle with rocks and twigs and watch your baby explore the elements on the inside. Take them outside to feel the earth against their bodies and don’t freak out when they want to taste the dirt. Anyways I could keep going on and on about how this way of raising our baby is so freeing for not only it’s but for the development of our incredible child. Happy reading
