5.0 out of 5 stars If you really want to learn about making glazes, and build your knowledge, this is it.
Bought this book with the idea that it would have some fairly good knowledge about the materials that go into making glazes, not only does it have that, but it has photos of how they turn out, formulas, everything you could possibly need to not only make your own glazes, but create new glazes with your own hand picked ingredients. There is a profound amount of work that went into making this book, and honestly this art form is how civilization will be rebuilt one day should it fall. This knowledge should never be lost and books like these keep that knowledge alive.

Beautiful book about glazes. I’m a pretty new potter so it was very informative for me. I don’t know enough to know if it would have been as good for an experienced potter. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Inspiration For Potters Who Need Help Finding Their Glazing Signature
One of my kids- a daughter- is a fantastic potter. She loves to do many creative things and is really good at what she does. Glazes are an area for her that give her a challenge. I got the book for her.HOW THE BOOK IS SET UPThis book is set up so you can use it as a reference or even as a training course. There is basic information in the front of the book to help you learn glazing techniques and make your pottery a success. Then it goes into each level of firing and the types of glazes you can experiment with.WHAT SHE USESOur daughter fires at about cone 6 or 7 and is not in charge of the firing, so she can not make the choices this book refers to without consulting the kiln owner at length. She likes that it goes into great detail if you want to get technical about the glazing or you can just look at photos and be inspired to try something illustrated in the book.HOW IN DEPTH?This is like a small training course in glazing. You will learn a lot about various levels of firing, what you can do and not do at those levels and things that you can try to make your pottery experience more enjoyable. You can get pretty in depth with this book, but you can also skim through and glean too.EXAMPLESThere are galleries in the book which will inspire creativity, but they do not go into detail on how to emulated the gallery items.THE BOTTOM LINEThis hard cover book is a nice basic course on all levels of firing glazes. It has great information in it and is a nice reference our daughter really enjoys using.MY RATINGFIVE STARS. She has been wanting a book like this (or course). Until she can get a course in glazing, this book has been a great way to start basic improvements and experimentation with her pottery. Between this and her obsession with watching John the Potter, she is really enjoying expanding her glazing experience.
5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous glazes in a very readable text
I am new to ceramics and just starting to learn about making glazes. This book is packed with useful information and lots of recipes for glazes along with pictures to show you what the glaze looks like when it's been fired correctly. I like that the glaze recipes have been organized by firing temperature. I also liked that the pictures include examples of layered glazes since layering can produce different aesthetic results than might otherwise be expected. While I enjoyed reading this book, as a beginner I'd want to read more before actually mixing and firing my own glaze. Mr. Kline mentions the necessity of learning to fire from an experienced kiln master. For an experienced potter, this book may be all you need to get up and running with these new glazing recipes. For a beginner, at a minimum you'd need another book, but more likely you'd need a teacher / mentor to get up and running independently with this material. Even without plans to mix glaze in the near future, I found the material in this book helpful for deepening my understanding of glazing and firing. All in all, it's a short book (about 170 pages, many with lots of beautiful color photos of ceramics) and it's packed with the wisdom of years of experience. It's very readable and accessible to people who are new to ceramics and interested in learning more about glazing.
5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful and inspirational
For myself, I loved the photographs but the information was outside my level of expertise. So I lent "Amazing Glaze Recipes and Combinations: 200+ Surefire Finishes for Low-Fire, Mid-Range, and High-Fire Pottery" by Gabriel Kline to a friend who might find something in it. She has a kiln and everything. She loved it. The information at the beginning was a good reminder for her for topics she knew but she said there were a few things that she didn't know and found it helpful. She also appreciated that the info chapters isn't too long. The featured designs in photographs were an inspiration. The recipes were nicely laid out. She really liked the insert articles that helped break up the monotony of the recipes. Nearly everything made her want to start up the wheel and get to work. She gave it an enthusiastic thumb's up and 5 stars.
