Joan Hoffman, M.A., is the author and co-author of hundreds popular storybooks and workbooks for children. Among the titles are Peter’s Dream, I Don’t Like Peas, and The New Bike (the latter two published under the pen name Marie Vinje), the Get Ready for Preschool, Kindergarten, and First Grade workbook trio, along with the entire Get Ready, Little Thinker, I Know It!, Try-n-Spy, and Little Busy Book workbook series.
She is also co-founder, along with her late husband James Hoffman, Ph.D., of School Zone Publishing. Visionary in business, she has long looked at the world through a child’s eyes, infusing her stories and lessons with joy and relatability.
As a mother of 4 back in the ‘70s, like moms the world over throughout history, she wanted what was best for her children. And she knew that teachers didn’t have the time to give her kids everything they needed. As an elementary school teacher, Hoffman worked hard to give her students what they needed to learn. And parents would ask her what they could do to help. That’s why she started School Zone—to help give children every possible chance to reach their potential.
She brought retail experience gleaned from previously founding and managing two regional educational book and supply stores for teachers and parents. Her husband lent his blended talents of educator and entrepreneur. A professor of education who also had first-hand experience as an elementary teacher, he was involved in teacher education programs at several colleges and had served at the helm of a company that published classroom materials.
Combining rock-solid editorial judgment and creative instincts with a thorough understanding of early education, Joan Hoffman was an exemplary proponent of design thinking long before it became a conceptual label. An innovative problem-solver, she has always sought to reach out to end users and challenge convention. Separating fleeting trends from legitimate advances has been essential to her company’s longevity.
The results speak for themselves. With the next generation—both son Jonathan and daughter Jennifer—taking on creative and strategic leadership roles in the company their parents started, School Zone seamlessly integrated digital learning platforms. The company received Apple’s exclusive Human Interface Design Excellence Award for software development, and its apps were part of the first-generation iPad launch in 2010. School Zone’s flagship product, the Little Scholar Learning Tablet, has earned industry-wide recognition and awards, as has its online learning destination Anywhere Teacher. Inspired by mom’s story-telling excellence, son Jonathan continued that legacy with Charlie & Company, an original series for ages 3-7, available on Oznnoz, Kidoodle.tv, ToonGoggles, BatteryPop, Ameba, and Highbrow.
Joan Hoffman says, “It is incredibly rewarding to see the children and grandchildren of some of our original customers enjoying our ever-evolving books, apps, flash cards, games, music, and other products—both print and digital.”
In 2019 School Zone celebrates its 40th anniversary, spanning portions of five decades and having sold more than 370 million educational products. Hoffman continues to be hands-on in the company, still writing, still envisioning, and still putting kids, parents, and teachers first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good learning tool for kids
Very educational. Would recommend to anyone with kids 4 and up
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Workbook!
My 5 year enjoys doing his homework in the afternoons before dinner. We received this book on June 27th, and it is July 10th. We are almost done with it! A couple more days and we will be finished. The book is easy enough for my child to understand, but he does need help as he does not know how to read yet. It has become a good afternoon distraction, to avoid TV time while I am cooking dinner. I will be looking for more learning books if anyone has any recommendations!
5.0 out of 5 stars Great!
My 5yr old (at the time of purchase) did really well using this book. He was definitely ahead of classmates on the learning curve practicing with this. I think it's a great purchase for a kindergartner.
5.0 out of 5 stars To solve the tasks your kids need to be thinking, thinking and thinking more...
I bought this activity book for my four years old son without knowing what to expect. For those who don't know what thinking skills mean here is a list of tasks covered:1- does it belong? (in a big picture find objects that does not look right within the context)2- categorize the similar objects in a row, find the odd one3-Align objects with another that has a similarity (toy and a toy box etc)4-Find the two same objects among similar looking objects.5-What comes next(solve the pattern of a series and find what is to follow)6-Find the sequence of the objects (three events are pictured and the task is to find which is the earliest and what comes later)7-Match colors and shapes8-Find an object or person in a picture by looking at a description (Jake has a flower and Matt is the one next to him etc.)9-Basic counting skills10-Coloring small areas according to the color coded letter that is in it.11-Match a solution to a question (multiple solutions and questions are given and you need to match which is the answer for which question)12-Finding the relation between two objectsAs you can see, it is a very comprehensive collection of various activities and some are really tough. Although it says it is for 3-5 years olds. I as an adult need to think for a few moments to be able to answer some of the tasks. It is highly challenging but a wide range of ages can find it interesting and educating. But parents should be helping the kid and be careful not to let him get discouraged upon failing a task. For a full color 64 page well constructed activity book a price tag of $3.5 is a real bargain as well. 5.0 out of 5 stars A great gift!
Very entertaining and my kiddo understands it very easily, which helps a lot!
Simple, easy to use
Our 6 years old girl loves doing activities on these pages. Love it! We will purchase others in the series or similar to this one.
It was fun
My 5 year old daughter finished the whole book in a few hours. It wasn't very challenging for her but she enjoyed it. So if your child is bored of coloring and tracing activities, this book offers other kind of exercises. Bonus, it has a completion certificate in the last page which made my daughter proud.
Good book
Really good book at a very affordable price.. would have been nice if there is an other version with thicker pages or if it's like a wipe clean book. It doesn't have a coloring page. It has lots of different activities like find the odd one out, match the objects, and similar activities which does not involve numbers and alphabets, so can be introduced to smaller kids. It's a fun book with a mix of activities.I'm planning to convert the book into a wipe clean book by taking apart each page and putting it inside plastic sheets and filing it in a ring binder. 👍
Great for kids
My kid loved it and always wanted to do more and more !pages every day. Awesome
